CHURCH LIFE @ FPC Calling all generations into a flourishing faith in Jesus fpcsanangelo.org June 2021 Page 1 Dear Friends and Family of First Presbyterian, Summer is here! As complicated as 2020 was, it seems that 2021 is on fast -forward! Historically, summer at church is a little slower pace. Families are out on vacation, Im taking some time off for rest and for reading, and the usual hustle and bustle of the weekly academic schedule gives way to time at the pool and lounging leisurely in the sun. These are all great things; and the church needs to remember to regularly rest in the midst of Gods good and gracious grace. This pattern of work and rest was established early in Scripture. In Gene- sis chapter 2, God demonstrates the value of rest at the culmination of cre- ation: Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, be- cause on it God rested from all his work that he had done in crea- tion (Gen 2:1-3). In Exodus, God gave the specific invitation and command to the people to rest: "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy(Ex 20:8-11). This weekly pattern of sabbath rest regular forms and transforms us. It is important to note that, from the beginning, sabbath rest was to be taken in the presence of God. In the sabbath, we do not simply cease to work; we actively engage in deeper reflection, stronger praise, intentional confes- sion, and a closer walk with God. And from God we receive his pres- enceand the peace that passes understanding. THE LORD CORRECTS THOSE HE LOVES. JUST AS A FATHER CORRECTS A CHILD IN WHOM HE DELIGHTS. We will hear different voices reading the Scripture and giving our sermons. We will look for ways to build our fel- lowship together around dinners, parties, movie nights, and other relational activities. We will give and receive kindness and forgiveness from each other. We will look for ways to not be busy, and we will learn to share life together. Essentially summer is a time for us to rest in the good and necessary work that God wants us to enjoy, that of building the community of faith. Look forward to getting a call from an elder who wants to get to know you better. Consider inviting some friends, and those who could become friends, to share a moment on the patio in unhurried conversation. Listen to the tender voice of the Spirit and share in the restful work of prayer and intercession. These are the joyful things to which Jesus calls. The work of the church is rest. Dear Friends and Family of First Presbyterian, Summer is here! As complicated as 2020 was, it seems that 2021 is on fast-forward! Historically, summer at church is a little slower pace. Families are out on vacation, I’m taking some time off for rest and for reading, and the usual hustle and bustle of the weekly academic schedule gives way to time at the pool and lounging leisurely in the sun. These are all great things; and the church needs to remember to regularly rest in the midst of God’s good and gracious grace. This pattern of work and rest was established early in Scripture. In Gene-sis chapter 2, God demonstrates the value of rest at the culmination of cre-ation:

Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, be-cause on it God rested from all his work that he had done in crea-tion (Gen 2:1-3).

In Exodus, God gave the specific invitation and command to the people to rest:

"Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy” (Ex 20:8-11).

This weekly pattern of sabbath rest regular forms and transforms us. It is important to note that, from the beginning, sabbath rest was to be taken in the presence of God. In the sabbath, we do not simply cease to work; we actively engage in deeper reflection, stronger praise, intentional confes-sion, and a closer walk with God. And from God we receive his pres-ence… and the peace that passes understanding.
