Pastor Mark’s

My favorite season of the year is fall. I love the cooler temperatures and the colors of the

leaves as they began to turn. I don’t know exactly what fall is like in Virginia, but I assume it’s

much the same as Indiana just with the cooler temperatures and changing colors coming a little

later. Fall comes every year, as do winter, spring and summer. One follows the other like the

waves rolling onto the beach.

I like that kind of consistency in my life. I like things that you can be certain of – because

there are too many things in life that are uncertain. Tragedies come unexpectedly, accidents

happen without warning and medical tests return with surprising results. As a pastor for nearly

thirty years, I‘ve sat with many people who have been hit hard by life’s uncertainties . . . and I’ve

been tossed about by a few myself. When those uncertainties happen we look for some

consistency, something we can hold onto in the midst of the turbulence. We long to know that

there is still some order to life. We need to know that the sun will come up tomorrow. That our

friends will still be present to us. That the leaves will drop in the fall only to return in the spring.

And we need to know, above all else, that the love of God is still with us.

If you are in the midst of some of life’s uncertain times, please be assured, just like the

season of fall comes very year so is the consistency of God’s love for us in all times. The sun rises

every morning. The seasons change every year. The leaves change color in the fall. The flowers

bloom in the spring. Such is the certainty of God’s love for each us.

Peace,

Mark

Fly Michele Home

On August 23, I asked my church family to enter into a personal mission within our church. Fly Michele Home is a voluntary effort of church members to provide air fares to our minister’s daughter so she can spend some time off from college with her dad and brother. Well, you listened and you came through, Michele will be flying home for Christmas. We had hoped she would come for Thanksgiving but she had already made plans to spend turkey day with her aunt. So, thank you very much for helping out. Please remember though, we are not finished just yet. Our goal is to build the fund so that Michele can fly on holidays and breaks and also have enough to cover the possibility of an emergency trip if needed. The good thing is that now we just need to remember to continue to contribute to the fund. I will do my part by reminding everyone where we stand. I know that you will continue to do yours.

Thanks again for your help.

9:00 -9:30 -Registration

9:30 Festival Begins - Ends at 3:00

Lunch provided

First Christian Lynchburg

3109 Rivermont Avenue

Lynchburg, VA 24502

Dear Friends,

This is a special invitation to attend the Christian Church in Virginia's first Festival of Faith on Saturday, October 17, 2015 at First Christian Church in Lynchburg, Virginia. The event's theme is "Preaching and Worshiping

Through Advent." Geared for pastors, those who plan worship, and anyone who likes to hear great preaching, the experience will be helpful for jump-starting plans for the Advent season, which begins on November

29. Participants will experience the weeks of Advent as the day progresses, with four Disciples ministers presenting lectionary-based sermons, interspersed with music and other worship elements. After each sermon

there will be some "talkback" time for interaction between participants and preachers. In addition to the educational and spiritual dimensions of the gathering, a resource area of Advent materials will be available for perusal,

as well as take-home handouts. The preachers for the Festival of Faith are: Rev. Eugene Reynolds, retired (Jerusalem Christian Church); Rev. Cyd Cowgill of First Christian

Lynchburg; Rev. Dr. Ken Wilbur of Rappahannock Christian Church, and Rev. Dr. Gina Rhea, retired (Unity Christian Church, Radford). Music will be led by Amy Moore of Bedford Christian Church.

The event begins with registration from 9:00 to 9:30 and will end at 3:00. Lunch will be provided. Registration cost is $20 for a single or $30 for a

couple. The registration form is available at www.ccinva.org/calendar. Payment and registration is also available electronically by clicking on the

CWS Hygiene Kits

In the face of natural disasters, violence, or

grinding poverty, Hygiene Kits can mean the

difference between sickness and health for

struggling families.

To assemble a Hygiene Kit you will need:

One hand towel measuring approx. 16”x28”

(no fingertip or bath towels)

One washcloth

One wide-tooth comb

One nail clipper

One bar of soap (bath size in wrapper)

One toothbrush (in original package)

Six standard Band-Aids

Place all items in a one-gallon plastic bag with a

zipper closure; remove excess air from bag, and

seal. Please do not add toothpaste to the Hygiene

Kit. Cartons of toothpaste that have an extended

expiration date will be added to Hygiene Kit

shipments just prior to shipment.

Hygiene Kit value: $10.00

You can bring any of these items or make

a donation and needed items will be

purchased.

Community Day was a huge success...in spite of the bad weather. Over 225 guests were served a meal, took home clothing and books, enjoyed face paining, crafts and games and some even won prizes. Christian music was provided by “The Voles” and parents took advantage of the Ident- A-Kid program offered by the Portsmouth Sheriff’s Department.

The Community Care Team would like to thank all those who volunteered their time and energy to make this year’s event the best one yet.

God is Great!! He was with us all day long. It was easy to find Him among all the smiles.
