The Scripture readings for this weekend continue to define the identity of Jesus for us. Over the last couple of weeks, the focus was highlighting the miracles of Jesus and today we hear and confirm the revelation to us, the truth about his identity and the kingdom of heaven.

Jesus asks the disciples an important question: “Who do you say that I am?” They responded with various answers. It was Simon who said, “You are the son of God”. Even though he may not have understood his answer, Simon was given a new name. Peter, the Rock. This response gave Peter the opportunity to change, to break down the barriers of the past and to forge ahead with a new vision and direction.

The question Jesus proposed is not about him, but more about us. Who am I? What do I believe? What do I stand for? What does my faith mean to me? We can give the same responses that people ordinarily give concerning Jesus like he is our God, our Lord and teacher. But do we mean it? If Jesus is not the center of our lives, if we ignore the opportunities to be a people of forgiveness and reconciliation, if we fail to live out the lessons he presents to us in the Scriptures, do we really know who God is for us. In the end, we will all be asked to answer the question, “Who do you say that I am?”. I hope that we will be able to respond in a way that identifies us as one of God’s children.

School has gotten off to a good start. There is a great spirit that is alive in the classrooms and corridors of the school. We welcome the new families that have joined our school and parish with the guidance and leadership of our new principal, Mr. Ted Morgan, along with our teachers and staff, we are making great strides towards academic excellence.

A reminder that this Wednesday, August 27th, we will have our Annual Back to School Cookout between 4:00 and 6:00PM in the St. Joseph Parking Lot. Don’t forget to bring your own beverages and chairs. The food will be provided and is sponsored by our Advisory Council.

Have a good week.

God Bless,

“This week in Harlan has been an experience like no other. I have never gained such a sense of charity and humbleness. Helping build houses with people I’ve only met in the past year for a whole week was

out of my comfort zone. The people I met are very inspira onal. I honestly say that I see God in each person I’ve met. God was present throughout this whole trip, and it’s truly a reviving feeling from the beach to the waterfall or to just playing volleyball and ea ng Dairy Queen, I’ve grown to understand that God will never leave your side. I fell in love with Harlan and everyone who came along.” ~Sarah S.

Queen of Martyrs School Welcomes Back Students and Families

Parents and students had an opportunity to meet their teachers and browse information tables hosted by Queen of Martyrs Parish and School Organizations. The Annual “WELCOME BACK” Day was well attended. The students and their families seemed in good

spirits, well rested from their Summer Vacation and ready to tackle the new school year! Good Luck to teachers and faculty as they embark on their journey into the 2014/2015 School Year, beginning Wednesday, August 20th!

Mary, Queen of Martyrs… Pray for Us. Live Jesus in our Hearts… Forever!

The 6th Annual Sully Shuffle for Parkinson’s disease research, a 5K run and 3K walk is scheduled to take place Sunday, September 14, 2014. The Sully

Shuffle namesake is lifelong Oak Lawn resident and retired Oak Lawn Community High School teacher, Skip Sullivan. Skip recently retired from being the Assistant Varsity Girls Basketball Coach. He was also an Assistant Football, Golf and Head Varsity Baseball Coach during his tenure at OLCHS. He has been fighting Parkinson’s disease for the past 10 years. His positive attitude and eternal optimism continues to inspire many.

We are excited to announce that we have a new route this year—the 5K run is a Certified Course (IL-14003-NM)! We are, therefore, anticipating an even great number of participants for this year's event.

We are grateful for the support and dedication from our com-munity and the commitment of our participants. We are proud to have donated almost $115,000 over the last 5 years to the American Parkinson Disease Association Midwest Chapter to fund PD research. The generosity shown by our community in the past has been overwhelming.

Working together we can help find a cure!

For additional information and registration details log onto www.sullyshuffly.org.

PLAYGROUND DONATIONS

We are looking for gently used playground equipment for our outside play area Queen of Martyrs School. Items such as Step 2 or Little Tikes clubhouses or any play equipment (no slides) made of PVC materials, would be greatly appreciated. We will pick up donations. Please contact Janine Missey at the parish rectory—708-423-8110.

With your help, we can create a fun and safe play area for the children of Queen of Martyrs to enjoy!

Thank you!
