Marriage Moments: "by prayer and petition...make your requests known to God." (Phil. 4:6) Which of the following qualities is your beloved strongest in - honesty, honor, jus-tice, loveliness, graciousness...? Be thankful and ask your spouse to pray that you also may grow in this quality.Parenting Pointers: In the Catholic tradition, October is Re-spect Life Month. In addition to respecting the human lives that are too often dismissed as unworthy or inconvenient (the unborn, the poor, the imprisoned, the handicapped...) this year add respect for mother earth, who is also suffering. Recently we received the annual promotional packet from the Diocesan Office of Vocations. Posters and prayer cards are included in the packet, which are updated annually with the current seminarians, listed with names, photos, and parish affiliation. I encourage you to pick up a copy of the prayer cards as it gives you something tangible to hold in your hands while you are praying for vocations. I had a parishioner recently tell me they really like the cards with the photos because it made the seminarians "real" to him and gave him an opportunity to pray specifically for that particular man in formation as well as pray more generally through the "Prayer for Vocations" also found on the card. The Office of Vocations sends out numerous copies to each parish to make them available to the faithful; if you have not picked up your copy, I encourage you to do so. On the card, you will find Corpus Christi parishioner Charles Reichert, son of Matt and Shelly Reichert. Charles is in College II and studies at St. John Paul II Seminary in Washington, D.C. It is always exciting for a parish to have a seminarian. Let us be sure to offer him our prayers and support as his formation continues. Also exciting for Corpus Christi, Brian Lardy and his wife Tammy are in the Diaconate Formation program. In the Diaconate Program, the candidate's wife goes through the program with her husband because the Church knows a man cannot - and should not - be effective in ministry without the support of his family. The Diaconate Program in the Diocese of Bismarck is a 5-year program and God-willing, Brian will be ordained to the permanent Diaconate in about one year's time. I was happy to have a nearly two-hour breakfast meeting with our Deacons and Deacon Candidate, Fr. Aune, our Wedding/Baptism Coordinator and our Parish Manager this past week. Not only did we discuss the various programs and ministries, we reviewed the last 100 days and planned through Christmas. We have a great team here at Corpus Christi! Much of what we hear regarding vocations focuses primarily on the priesthood, but we must not forget that women are called to the religious life also. We are fortunate to have both Sr. Ivo Schoch and Sr. Idelle Badt on staff, which is a true gift to the parish as we witness and participate in their lives of faith and service. Not many parishes have that opportunity! Sr. Badt is the Vocation Director for Annunciation Monastery and I know her presence and guidance would be beneficial to any single woman exploring her vocation. In fact, Fr. Aune and I are working with her on a video to promote National Vocational Awareness Week, November 1-7, 2020. Have a

great week!

Sunday, Oct 04, 2020TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMECelebrate the joy of new lifeIn a happy collision of observances, October is dedicated torespecting life, supporting fair trade, employing the differentlyabled, and praying the Rosary. Today is not only Respect LifeSunday but also, in memory of Francis of Assisi, an occasion tobless the animals who share our lives. If you’re seeking anintegrated moral code, here’s your chance to champion thespectrum of life. The Rosary’s Joyful Mysteries lead the way:embrace new life, encourage mothers, support child-affirminglaws, recognize the gifts of all God’s children, and respect thewisdom of young people.

TODAY'S READINGS: Isaiah 5:1-7; Philippians 4:6-9; Matthew 21:33-43(139). “Finally, [the landowner] sent his son to them, thinking,‘They will respect my son.’”

Monday, Oct 05, 2020MEMORIAL OF BLESSED FRANCIS XAVIER SEELOS, PRIESTA saint for this seasonAs we’ve lately learned, it’s hard to be happy during a healthcrisis, but Redemptorist Father Francis Xavier Seelos was calledthe “Cheerful Ascetic,” even while serving the sick during adisease outbreak. Known for his kindness and missionary zeal, this German-born priest kept his sermons simple for everyone tounderstand and was sought out as a compassionate confessor. Hewas an itinerant preacher throughout the Eastern and MidwesternUnited States, before being sent to New Orleans where he died ofyellow fever. Those seeking healing can submit their prayerpetition to the National Shrine of Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos.

TODAY'S READINGS: Galatians 1:6-12; Luke 10:25-37 (461). “Youshall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart . . . and yourneighbor as yourself.”

Tuesday, Oct 06, 2020MEMORIAL OF BLESSED MARIE ROSE DUROCHER, VIRGINWhen Mary receives a Martha jobJesus said his friend Mary was right to cease activity, to simply sitat his feet and listen. But the church may ask you to be more likeMartha—to reach out to the world, as Jesus also called on hisfollowers to do. Such was the dilemma of Marie Rose Durocher. This quiet and frail young woman preferred the quiet life but waspressed into pastoral service by her brother, a Montreal priest inthe 1830s. Then her bishop asked her to start a new religiouscommunity to help educate the young. How is God asking you tomove beyond your own comfort zone today?

TODAY'S READINGS: Galatians 1:13-24; Luke 10:38-42 (462). “Awoman whose name was Martha welcomed him.”

Wednesday, Oct 07, 2020MEMORIAL OF OUR LADY OF THE ROSARYProtect us from harmThe Rosary has been a favored Catholic form of prayer forcenturies. Inviting us to pray five Our Fathers, 50 Hail Marys, andfive Glory Be’s while meditating on gospel stories from Mary’sand Jesus’ lives, this spiritual practice has helped generations ofCatholics ask for Mary’s intercession. In October 1571, Catholicsoldiers prayed the Rosary to prepare for battle with Turkishsoldiers in the Gulf of Corinth. When they won that battle, PopePius V claimed that October 7 would be known as the Feast of

Our Lady of Victory. Two years later, his successor, GregoryXIII, changed the name to the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. As our world faces the challenge of the COVID-19 virus, weagain ask for Mary's intercession. Our Lady of the Rosary, prayfor us.

TODAY'S READINGS: Galatians 2:1-2, 7-14; Luke 11:1-4 (463). “Jesuswas praying in a certain place.”

Thursday, Oct 08, 2020Persistence pays offPrayer is not like an ATM whereby requests are entered anddispensed. Ultimately our model is Jesus. Christ’s persistence inprayer united him with God but did not erase his suffering. Hesweated blood, he was crucified. When we do not receive theanswer we are hoping for to our prayer request, we may suffertoo, but, like Jesus, we can open ourselves to deeper union withGod. Take time today to offer God your needs, trusting that God’sstrength and presence always suffices.

TODAY'S READINGS: Galatians 3:1-5; Luke 11:5-13 (464). “If you . . .give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father inheaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?”

Friday, Oct 09, 2020God casts out evilAlthough Hollywood has popularized exorcism with such moviesas The Exorcist (1973) and more recently The Conjuring series, exorcism is a legitimate rite in the church. An exorcism is actuallya form of prayer. It is used in situations where the faithfulexperience a force of evil or the “powers of darkness,” which wecall the devil or demons. Recognizing the place of exorcism in theprayers of the church is important because it reminds us that Godhas already freed us from the snare of evil. As you encountervarious “demons” in your life, remember to pray: Call upon Godto be with you and to separate you from all that is evil and tosurround you with God’s love.

TODAY'S READINGS: Galatians 3:7-14; Luke 11:15-26 (465). “But if itis by the finger of God that [I] drive out demons, then the kingdomof God has come upon you.”

Saturday, Oct 10, 2020Put on your dancing shoes! On this day, the Jewish community celebrates Simchat Torah. This joyous harvest festival marks the beginning and end of theannual Torah reading, and culminates in dancing with the sacredtexts. In a similar sense of celebration, Jesus says to his disciples,"Blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it.”Choose scripture as your companion, and get ready to shimmy, shake, rock and roll, and trip the light fantastic all for the greaterglory of God.

TODAY'S READINGS: Galatians 3:22-29; Luke 11:27-28 (466). “And ifyou belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirsaccording to the promise.”
