The phrase appears only in the Gospel of John, on the lips of John the Baptist, who utters it twice. A little bit later Andrew, who heard John and then followed Jesus, brings his brother Simon to be re-named Cephas, or Peter. A careful look at these Bible verses shows us the mission of everyone baptized into the Body of Christ: we must always proclaim our faith in Christ, so that others will follow him. We may not know how the will of God might work through those we bring to Christ; that is not the point. THE LAMB OF GOD

“Behold the Lamb of God!” We hear this phrase every Sunday at Mass, but there’s a good chance that many Roman Catholics do not know who in the Bible originally spoke it. The phrase appears only in the Gospel of John, on the lips of John the Baptist, who utters it twice. In today’s Gospel reading, John proclaims Jesus as the Lamb of God, and two of John’s own disciples then follow Christ. Dear Parishioners,

The Church’s liturgical calendar this year falls in such a way that the Baptism of Jesus was not celebrated on a Sunday but on this past Monday. This feast offers me the opportunity to say something about baptism and its meaning for us and the responsibilities that go with being a Catholic parent and godparent. I told the young parents at last week’s baptism instruction that I have been giving every penitent the same penance in confession for a while now. I ask each person to pray to the Blessed Mother and St. Joseph to influence the parents of the parish to bring their children to mass. We have so many children who are absent from Sunday mass and it is a worry for me. Sports, dance class, and household chores take priority in many families and our children aren’t being brought to mass. I am asking grandparents, godparents, aunts, uncles, and neighbors to offer to accompany children to mass if the parents are unable to do so. This would be a great New Year’s resolution: Come to mass as a family; if work prevents this, ask a trustworthy adult to bring your child back and forth to mass. For too many children their first holy communion and their second holy communion are years apart. Please help me to bridge the gap. You have my gratitude for your generosity in the Parish Christmas collection. Since the last report, we have risen to $35,461.00. Thank you very much. The pipes in the church and rectory are almost all original and are corroding at the same time and this collection will help. Tomorrow will be Martin Luther King’s birthday and a Federal Holiday. The rectory office will be closed and there will be no 6:45am mass. This holiday is a natural time to examine our attitudes toward racism and to pray for its eradication from our hearts and from our words and actions.

Let’s pray for each other, Msgr. Kevin B. Noone

Communion

Reverently we receive the body and blood of Christ. The priest places the host on our

tongue or in our hands. It is a time of intimacy with Jesus. It is not a time to light candles or

walk around the church. This is the time we join in fellowship with Jesus and with one another.

Amen.
