Tempted by Transfiguration

Jesus faces a different sort of temptation in today’s Gos-pel. Peter (whom Jesus would refer to as “Satan” in their encounter at Caesarea Philippi) tempts him to stay on the mountain of the Transfiguration, residing in a tent of glory with Moses and Elijah, as the Ark of the Covenant had dwelt in a tent of glory among the people of Israel. Jesus doesn’t succumb, but makes Peter and his other followers come down with him off their mountain of glory to continue their ministry of proclaiming the reign of God. Jesus turned down the glory and power offered to him in last week’s temptation passage; he likewise turns it down again, even when it seems to portray him as the fulfillment of Israel’s messianic expectations. Yet, in a way, Jesus did allow himself to be tempted by transfiguring moments in his pub-lic ministry when he faced illness, demons, disbelief, hypo-crites. He allowed each of these moments to transfigure the world around him more and more into the image of God’s reign. They also each transfigured him a bit more on his road to Jerusalem, Calvary, the tomb, and his ever-lasting transfiguration in resurrection.

Transfigured by Temptation

The words “disciple” and “discipline” are very close rela-tives. People in various walks of life know that our person-al transfigurations frequently happen only when we en-counter times of trial. Those in recovery know that ongoing encounters with temptations are sources of growth and strength. And so it is for us as faithful disciples renewing our lives through Lenten disciplines. We need to turn aside from the allure of the temptations of self-centeredness, greed, and unhealthy appetites as we increase the pres-ence of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving in our lives. Daily, most of us confront a “demon,” an illness in body, mind, or spirit, whether in ourselves or in the world. With Christ, we are called upon to confront its presence in ourselves or others, and like Christ, find our true and lasting transfig-uration by growing in obedience to the Father’s will. By God’s grace we will one day come to live in the everlasting glory of the Resurrection that we also share. Copyright © 2007, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

Lenten Book Study

Prayer, Our Deepest Longing By Ronald Rolheiser, OMI

Join us for a Book Discussion and Light Supper

Monday Evening, March 24th, 5-6 p.m. St. Mary Magdalene Conference Room

Then we’ll proceed to hear Father Rolheiser speak in person at 7 p.m., Shiley Theater, Camino Hall, University of San Diego, 5998 Alcala Park, San Diego. Prayer: Our Deepest Longing looks at the issues facing people of faith in today’s culture and offers a way of more effectively dealing with them by seeking out opportunities for prayer. The book addresses the following questions: Why Pray? Illustrating the purpose and benefits of prayer; What Is It so Difficult To Pray? Noting how our contempo-rary culture conspires against taking time out for solitude and prayer and how our own ego can work against devel-oping a deeper relationship with God through prayer; What is Prayer?: describing affective (personal) and priestly (for the world) prayer as well as meditation, con-templation, the Divine Office, the Mass and Scripture. Sticking With it When it Gets Difficult: addressing the de-velopment of mature prayer, discussing ways to pray in times of boredom, disillusionment, crisis, helplessness or after a loved one’s death; Mysticism: an increasingly pop-ular form of intimate relationship with God.

Ronald Rolheiser is a Roman Catholic priest with the Mis-sionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate and an international-ly renowned speaker and spiritual writer. He offers this book for all manner of believer, whether one’s faith is sol-idly rooted in Catholicism, wavering between the Christi-anity of childhood and non-participatory faith as an adult, for the person who is just not sure what to believe, or one who believes it all. He addresses topics that typify our culture such as narcissism, pragmatism, efficiency and self-gratification, and that work against a healthy spiritual life.

1). RSVP for Supper & Book Discussion to Rita @ (619) 276-6805 2). Register for Fr. Rolheiser’s lecture ($10) at www.sandiego.edu/ccs/rscj-lecture or by calling the USD Center for Christian Spirituality (619) 260-4784 3). Parenting Pointers

March 21st is ‘Single Parent Day’. If you are a single par-ent we honor you for the effort you must make to provide continuous care for your child, often without the help of a ready partner. If you are blessed to have a helpmate, reach out to a parent who needs a helping hand this week-end.

ME, A SAINT?

Are you called to be a saint? Of course, we all are!

Father Robert Barron is an acclaimed author and priest, the founder of Word on Fire Catholic Ministries, and the creator of the popular Catholicism series. Please join us for the 4 week Untold Blessing Spiritual Study Series and gain a better understanding of what it means to be a saint with practical, everyday suggestions from Father Barron. During Lent, we are focusing on our relationship with God, as we work to bring ourselves closer to God through prayer and sacrifice. Here is a stewardship pray-er that can help us in this focus. Lord God, You alone are the source of every good gift, of the vast array of the universe, and the mystery of each human life. We praise You and we thank You for your great power and Your tender, faithful love. Everything we are given and everything we have is Your gift, and after having created us You have given us into the keeping of Your son, Jesus Christ. Fill our minds with HIS truth and our hearts with HIS love, that in HIS spirit we may be bonded together into a com-munity of faith, a parish family, and a caring people. In the Name and Spirit of Jesus, we commit ourselves to be good stewards of the gifts entrusted to us, to share our time, our talent and our material gifts as an outward sign of the treasure we hold in Jesus. Amen
