Dear St. Elizabeth friends, Several years ago, I had the opportunity to go to St. Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican. The Basilica is immense and very beautiful, with many different areas throughout to explore and includes statues of saints and collections of artworks from some of the greatest artists in history to admire and reflect upon. As I walked through the front entrance and pro-ceeded toward the altar at the back of the Basilica, I noticed a massive bronze monument known as the Cathedra Petri or the Throne of St. Peter. It serves as an altarpiece, and enclosed within it is the chair believed to have been used by St. Peter. Although this massive throne takes up the entire space at the back of the Basilica, it was the amber colored stained-glass window above it that captured my eye that day. At the center of the window is a white dove symbolizing the Holy Spirit. Beams of light shoot forth from the dove, highlighting that God the Holy Spirit is the source of the light. I remember being mesmerized by this massive window and reflecting upon how the Holy Spirit, through the gifts of counsel, knowledge, fortitude, piety, fear of the Lord, wisdom and understanding, empower us to help build up the kingdom of God on earth. As we close out the Easter season this Pentecost Sunday, we pray the Holy Spirit will shed its rays of light upon each of us. It is not likely that we will experience a sudden noise from the sky, a great driving wind, and tongues of fire as we heard today in our reading from the Acts of the Apostles. Rather, the Holy Spirit will burn within our hearts, stirring into flame the gifts that God has given to you and me by inspiring each of us to be Christ’s ambassadors of love and mercy to all those around us. In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, we need the gifts of the Holy Spirit to comfort us, to bring solace in our grief and anxiety, to heal our wounds, to renew our strength, and to kindle within us the fire of God’s love. The power of the Holy Spirit reinforces our baptismal call, that was strengthened at confirmation, to bring the gifts of the spirit and our service to both God and neighbor into the everyday and ordinary nooks and crannies of society. For most of us during this time of social distancing and restrictions, this might seem to be an impossible task. Howev-er, in my homily last week, I spoke about the ordinary citizens during WWII who planted victory gardens in every available open area, some in large lots and others in small window boxes. Twenty million ordinary families fed a na-tion. Perhaps during this pandemic, we can find fertile ground, no matter how small it may be, and plant the seeds that allow the rays of the Holy Spirit to shine upon us for a “spiritual victory garden,” watering it through acts of kindness and with prayer so that our spiritual garden grows strong and healthy and bears much fruit. You and I ordinary citizens of the Body of Christ, empowered by the light of the Holy Spirit, can feed a world starving for the love of God.

Come, Holy Spirit, come! And from your celestial home

Shed a ray of light divine!

May the light of the Holy Spirit shine upon us!

Oasis in Paterson is so grateful for the extremely generous donations our parish sent last month. They continue to provide daily hot "to go" meals as well as a grocery bag a week to those in need in their community. We will have another food collec-tion on Sunday, May 31 to continue to support them during these challenging times.

Items critically needed are: 1. Cans of soup, tomato sauce, veggies, tuna, beans (black, kidney etc), chili/meat, and fruit 2. Boxes of pasta, oatmeal and cereal 3. Peanut butter and jelly 4. Baby diapers 3-6 size and baby wipes Kathy and John Foley will be collecting the items again at their home at 752 Albemarle Street in Wyckoff (on the front porch) anytime on Sunday, May 31st –but if you need to drop off Saturday, May 30th, that is ok. Please practice social distancing and wear a mask when dropping off the items. Alternatively, we are happy to pick up the donations at your porch/mailbox/driveway between the hours of 10am and 4pm on May 31st. Please email us your address by 8:00 pm Saturday May 30th. Sharing the Gospel

Jesus gave his friends the Holy Spirit, who would always live in their hearts. If any of them were ever sad or afraid, they Holy Spirit comforted them. If someone had sinned, they could bring healing and forgiveness. With the help of the Holy Spirit, they shared God's love with the world.
