Dear Parishioners,This weekend we are celebrating the 244th anniversa-
ry of the July 4th adoption of the Declaration of Inde-pendence. In 2017, I wrote the following about Indepen-dence Day for the bulletin:
Surely, many of us recognize and perhaps can easily recall its memorable second sentence: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Cre-ator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
Sadly, this declaration of human rights was clearly hypocritical then and still is today, 241 years later. When written, the claim “all men…,” for instance, was far from inclusive. Neither slaves nor women were contenders. And though we have come a long way, we know racism and sexism still persists. We actu-ally almost daily see Rights denied to Refugees and Immigrants, to those in the LGBTQ community, and to the still far too many jobless, economically struggling, and downright destitute throughout our land. After all, how does one really pursue happiness if hungry or homeless, sick and without adequate health care?
Still many of us will celebrate our nation with barbecues and
shortcomings, our political divisions and animosity towards those with whom we disagree, should we?
Recently, a reason we should was highlighted for me at our Par-ish’s “end-of-year” afternoon barbecue for our seniors. After I of-fered Grace, one of the women, said she believed strongly that our country desperately needs prayers at this time. She has been praying, therefore, simply by singing the words of Irving Berlin’s “God Bless America.” Leading us in song and without the printed words, we were all able to rousingly and with heartfelt voices join her in singing:
God Bless America, land that I loveStand beside her and guide her
Thru the night with a light from aboveFrom the mountains to the prairies
To the oceans white with foamGod Bless America, my home sweet homeGod Bless America, my home sweet home
For those of us of a certain age, we cannot even think of this song without the name Kate Smith coming to mind. Since writing this bulletin letter, though, we learned last April of a controversy surrounding this beautiful song. What became controversial was her recording in the early

1930s of two songs with clearly racist lyrics. This resulted in the NY Yankees and Philadelphia Flyers removing her rendition of God Bless America from their games. Her statue was also removed from outside the Wells Fargo Center.
A few days later it was uncovered that in May 1945, a few months before the end of WWII on a popular radio show she said the following:
“Race hatreds — social prejudices — religious bigotry
Unless they are exterminated it’s inevitable that we will have another war. And where are they going to be exter-minated? At a conference table in Geneva? Not by a long shot. In your own city — your church — your children’s school — perhaps in your own home. You and I must do it – every father and mother in the world, every teacher, everyone who can rightfully call himself a human being. Yes, it seems to me that the one thing the peoples of the world have got to learn if we are ever to have a lasting peace, is — tolerance. Of what use will it be if the lights go on again all over the world — if they don’t go on … in our hearts.”
While these two songs that she did not write are racist, her own words seem to demonstrate personal, heartfelt
regular attendance at Mass converted her? [She became -
tending Mass.] As Confederate statues and monuments continue to
be rightly removed across our nation, I hope these past
among us that in turn inspires our own continued need to learn, develop and grow.
Let me end this letter with the words I wrote in 2017 along with the hope for each of us to continue to person-ally grow as it seems Kate Smith had.
We may never be a Peoples free of hypocrisy. Yet, as long as we continue to pray for our God to bless us and guide us, and, as long as we earnestly strive with all our heart to see that one day that second sentence of the Declaration of Independence becomes a truly inclu-sive reality across our nation, we indeed have reason to celebrate. Notice:
Dr. Anthony Compagnone, a parishioner and member of the Liturgy Commission, has
advised us that masks are effective ONLY if they cover both your nose and your mouth,
with a snug fit over the nasal bridge. This is the best way to prevent your respiratory
droplets from escaping into the space around you and onto others.
Further, he pointed out that recent studies have shown that, while VALVED masks may
make it easier for you to inhale, they are ineffective in preventing your exhaled breath
from contaminating the air around you.
Valved masks of any kind, therefore, will be prohibited for use during Mass at St. Ignatius.
The Greeter at your liturgy will happily provide you with an acceptable mask to wear as
you enter the church. We also ask that you wear your mask properly throughout the Mass.
This is for the safety of us all. We appreciate your cooperation.

Dear Cardinal O’Malley:
We are writing to follow our letter of June 3 and commend you for the powerful statement you issued on June 5
and the homily you delivered on June 13 at the Mass for Racial Justice and Healing. We were heartened to hear
your call for Catholics to address the “evil and moral cancer that is racism,” and your reminder that “it will not
happen without the sustained effort and focus of all.”
As Catholics, we must reckon with our own history of racism – we “must contend with our historical complicity
in slavery” and prioritize racial healing. As such, we want to lift up our call to action and ask you, once again, to
consider the four recommendations articulated in our June 3 letter and repeated below.
You rightly stated that “our faith calls us to leadership in breaking down barriers and standing against injustice.”
We heartily agree that “the reality of racism in our society and the moral imperative of racial equality and justice
must be incorporated in our schools, our teaching and our preaching.” Our parish of St. Ignatius has taken some
positive steps over the past two years, steps that have accelerated in the months since the murders of George
Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery: our Pastor has delivered multiple homilies on the need for recon-
ciliation and anti-racism; we have held several prayer witnesses in support of the Black community; we have
provided resources for our parents on raising anti-racist children; and we will soon display several banners with
anti-racist messages.
Our call to action, informed by our prayerful consideration on Pentecost Sunday, and energized by the Holy
Spirit is reiterated here:
•Establish a high-level Racial Justice Committee with a mandate to recommend specific steps for every
Catholic and every parish in the Diocese to combat racism;
•Equip all parishes in the Archdiocese with Black Lives Matter banners and emphasize that they should be
displayed prominently;
•Endow a fund, using monies given via the current Cardinal’s appeal, to support local organizations working
to address issues of systemic racism; and,
•Embrace an advocacy agenda that explicitly supports racial equity and counters systemic racism.
Mayor Walsh has pledged to make Boston a national leader in the work of combatting systemic racism. As the
leader of the Archdiocese – the fourth largest in the United States – centered in Boston, your actions will deter-
mine whether the Catholic church can play a significant role in helping the country rid itself of the scourge of
racism.

Please continue your support of Project Bread, if you are able. Kids and
