SUNDAY JUNE 11, THE MOST HOLY TRINITY

Dear Parishioners, It is my pleasure to write today about your future pastor, whom you already know well, Father Daniel. After much careful deliberation and prayer, we concluded that this re-arrangement of the assignments in Glen Cove would be beneficial for all involved and I strongly agreed. Although change can be uncomfortable because we fear the unknown, in this case, there is really no grounds for fear. Father Daniel is well known. I have known Father Daniel for nearly 27 years, when we met in August 1990 at the National Shrine of the Immacu-late Conception – which, to my mind, suggests Our Lady’s hand in our foundation here in Glen Cove (Indeed, and this is the last thing I will say of myself, her hand has been evi-dent in my life all along, under the title of the Immaculate Conception, for I entered God’s family when I was baptized at Immaculate Conception parish in Tuckahoe, on March 3, 1968). Father Daniel has over the last six years taken an active role in promoting the well-being of St Rocco. He celebrates Mass in Italian (better than I do!). He has served as a chaplain to the Rosarians. He has worked tirelessly to lift up our liturgi-cal practices and music program. He has often served as a spiritual guide and counsellor to those who have sought his wisdom and insight. Father Daniel greatest fault is his seemingly limitless will-ingness to sacrifice his health and wellbeing for oth-ers. Sometimes we need to compel him to take a break! He is a model to us all of priestly zeal and pastoral solicitude. As the new pastor of St Rocco – effective June 28th – he brings a wealth of experience. He is about to celebrate his 20th anniversary as a priest (on June 14th). He served as a parochial vicar in three different parishes of the Archdio-cese of Washington, DC before he entered Klosterneuburg in 2004. He served in two parishes before he became Pastor of the parish of St Leopold in Donaufeld, where he served until he left for Glen Cove in 2011. As the Prior of the Canonry of Saint Leopold, Father Daniel is the local superior of the Canons Regular of Saint Augustine of Klosterneuburg in the United States of Amer-ica. Therefore, St Rocco now will enjoy this distinction as St Patrick once did! I am confident that you will be delighted with your new pas-tor, with his vision and style, with his aspirations and lead-ership because much of it you have already encountered through me. Nothing we Canons do is the work of an indi-vidual. We are team of priests with a shared vision of the priesthood and the Church. And yet, a new pastor also af-fords new opportunities. Please embrace them! I am, of course, not leaving. I will continue my priestly work at St Rocco and St Patrick as well as at All Saints. Hence, there is no reason to say good-bye, just thanks for these last six years. God bless you, Father Elias

Rosary Society: The Rosary Society of the Church of St. Rocco currently has ~200 ladies that are members. Our motto is Unity, Charity and Humility. We aim to honor our Lord through devotion, praise, reverence and filial love for the Blessed Virgin Mary. We meet on the last Monday evening of every month at 7:30PM in the Madonna Room to recite the Rosary together (in English & Italian) and to discuss and plan spiritual and social church events as well as fund-raising efforts. There is often a guest speaker and at the end of the meeting we enjoy each other’s company over coffee and cake. We celebrate Mass together the first Sunday of the month at the 7:30AM Mass, followed by the parish breakfast when available. Please contact us at [email protected] if you would like to become a member!

Holy Name Society: The Holy Name Society is a confraternity open to all adults in which we aim to assist each other to grow in holiness. The Saint Rocco's Holy Name Society is always looking for a few good men! We meet on Friday at 7:30PM and celebrate Mass together on the second Sunday of the month at the 7:30AM Mass. Please consider joining us. If you are interested, please contact the church office and leave your name and someone will return your call. Thank You.

Glen Cove Young Adults: Our new group of young adults meets every-other Monday evening for an event we call Distilled Theology. We meet at a local pub to discuss topics of interest and to learn how to address these issues with the Truth. For the past few months, we’ve discussed topics such as the Church and State, Karma, Contemplative Prayer, the Virtues, and Sexual Ethics. We are fortunate to have one of our priests lead each talk. We have young adults come from all over the island for these events, and the fellowship is as important as the discussion! For more information, please email Kelsey: [email protected].

Saint Padre Pio Prayer Group: Meets in the church the second Monday of the Month (except during summer) for prayers at 7:00PM and a Mass at 7:30PM.

St. Rocco’s Children’s Choir: Choir is taking a break for the summer and will resume in the fall. Rehearsals are Tuesdays from 4:30-5:30PM in the parish center. We sing at the 10:15AM Mass twice a month. Children ages 7-14 are welcome to join! No musical experience necessary—just bring your voice and your smile for a fun and fruitful rehearsal! Try out one rehearsal to see what it is like, or contact Theresa Bissex, the choir director, at [email protected].

What is a Solemnity?

We celebrate 17 Solemnities throughout the year, and this year SIX of them are during the month of June!

The first three solemnities this month fall on Sundays, which automatically make them Holy Days of Obligation. The last three are NOT Holy Days of Obligation, but they are still holy days and they celebrate some of the most important mysteries of our faith. You may enjoy attending a Daily Mass on these days, or contemplating the particular mysteries in a special way. Perhaps you aren’t familiar with these solemnities, and want to learn more. Feel free to stop by the parish office or ask a priest!

Not all Solemnities are Holy Days of Obligation and this can vary by diocese and country.

A Solemnity is the highest form of celebration on the Liturgical Calendar. Solemnities are reserved for the most important mysteries of faith.
