He is Risen
Alleluia St. Mel’s Catholic Church
“He is not here, for he has risen, as he said he would” Matthew 28:6
When the women went to Jesus’ tomb after the sabbath on the first day of the week an angel greeted them with these words. Still in shock having just witnessed the brutal torture and death of Jesus on the cross, these first witnesses of His Resurrection must have felt as if they were still suffering the lingering effects of a nightmare: “You say, He’s not here? He’s been raised. No way. Two days ago, we laid his broken, lifeless body in that tomb with his mother, Mary, John the beloved disciple, and Joseph of Arimathea. Someone must have taken him.” Like these incredulous women we too question: Why? Why are we plagued by this serious threat to our health? We can sympathize with their perplexity. They believed that someone took Jesus. Confused and frustrated, we too are angry for this virus has taken away our free-dom; it has kept us from one another. The world seems to be at a standstill. To some degree we feel lifeless; not with the women at the tomb but sealed within it! The core belief of a Christian is the Resurrection of Christ from the dead. St. Paul reminds us: “If we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him” (Romans 6:8). In some ways, COVID-19 has deadened us. It has entombed us in discomfort, darkness and the fear of death. Yearning for new life we welcome today more than ever the Easter Joy: “He is not here, for he has risen, as he said he would.” Let us continue to “walk by faith and not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7). He called Lazarus out of his tomb. As we continue to trust in the power of His Resurrection may He bless us like Lazarus by untying us and letting us go free!
