FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

I WON’T STAND FOR THIS! I have often wondered throughout my years as a priest what is the best position for prayer. I always like kneeling to pray or meditate. I think it is most conducive to recollection

and adoration. Sometimes though it is hard on the joints when you are in your fifties! Actually, whenever we pass the Tabernacle, we are supposed to kneel because we believe that Jesus Christ is present there in the Eu-charist. In the past few days here in the United States, we have had really a “big argument” about kneeling not in Church but rather at football games! The kneeling is meant not as an act of devotion, but rather as a deni-gration of our flag and our country. There is a word that may have gone out of fashion in our society today and that word is “decorum.” It means “proper behavior.” According to the United States flag code, during the rendition of the National Anthem when the flag is displayed, all present except those in uniform should stand at attention facing the flag with their right hand over the heart. Those in the military should salute. I think most of us know this-it is not something new! The posture of standing for the Anthem with hand over the heart conveys respect and honor for this great land of ours. However, just because we stand for the Star Spangled Banner, it does not mean that all of us agree with everything that goes on in our culture. There are some things in America today that we as Cath-olics take issue with-foremost among them legalized abortion which has taken the lives of almost 60 million re-born children since 1973. Even if our country and her leaders have made terrible mistakes at times, we still respect it and pledge allegiance to its flag. We should appreciate the face that here in the United States we are guaranteed with what President Franklin D. Roosevelt defined as four basic freedoms: Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Worship, Free-dom from Want. We have one of the highest standards of living in the world. Certainly the NFL athletes are conscious of this-they live out the American dream in a magnificent way because they make million and mil-lions of dollars unlike most of us! But you see, many of these spoiled players don’t appreciate what they have and thus we might say they “Bite the hand that feeds them.” I was impressed with one of the Pittsburg Steelers, Alejandro Villanueva, a veteran of the Afghan War, who had the guts to stand outside with his hand over his heart for the National Anthem while his team quiv-ered back in the locker room. Later on he apologized for his behavior, but there should have been no apology-he did the right thing! And shouldn’t we all be doing the right thing in our loves as citizens? Today many of people of conviction like the Steeler’s Villanueva “stand alone” in their beliefs. True liberty and freedom cannot be maintained without morality and faith. We as Catholics and Americans stand for something and that is God and country. Some people in our society can’t stand that! But let’s continue to stand for the National Anthem and kneel to our God, praying for unity in this great country that is America. Sincerely in Christ, Father Jerome 10
