TTHE FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER – May 14, 2017

Think about it – if you could create your own mom, wouldn’t you make her without sin? That’s exactly what Jesus did! In order to take on the punishment for all human sin, Jesus had to be fully human and fully divine. So, He had to be born from a human woman, but He could not have sin Himself. If Mary had been born with Original Sin, Jesus would have had it, too. The greeting of the angel Gabriel to Mary in the beginning of Luke’s Gospel “Hail, full of grace,” which in the original Greek, kekaritomene, meant one who had been graced by God in a special way. This lack of Original Sin means that Mary was the perfect vessel to bear the God and Savior of the entire world. Her “yes” to God to take on the challenge of conceiving and raising Jesus was integral to salvation history, and thus it makes sense that she was born without sin. Though your mom probably was born with Original Sin, it is important to recognize that she makes similar sacrifices for you that Mary did while raising Jesus. Today, on Mother’s Day, we especially entrust all of our mothers to the care of the Blessed Mother, that they may look to her as a guide and a helpmate.

Respect Life Society

We wish all expectant mothers, mothers, godmothers, grandmothers, and great grandmothers a most blessed

Mother’s Day.

A Mom’s Prayer Dear Lord, it’s such a hectic day, With little time to stop and pray, For life’s been anything but calm

Since You called me to be a Mom. Running errands, matching socks,

Building dreams with wooden blocks, Cooking, cleaning, finding shoes And other stuff that children lose,

Fitting lids on bottled bugs, Wiping tears and giving hugs,

A stack of last week’s mail to read So where’s the quiet time I need? Yet, when I steal a moment, Lord, Just at the sink or ironing board,

To ask the blessings of Your grace, I see then, in my small one’s face,

That you have blessed me all the while And I stoop to kiss that precious smile.

This year, on May 13, will be the hundredth anniversary of the beginning of the apparitions of Our Lady to the three shepherd children of Fatima, Portugal in 1917. The three children were Francisco Marto and Jacinta Marto and, their cousin, Lucia dos Santos. Lucia was the oldest of the three children and the youngest of seven siblings. Following the apparitions and the deaths of her cousins, at 14 years old, she was sent to the Dorothean Sisters of Villar and in 1928 became a sister of St. Dorothy. In 1946, she entered the convent of the Carmelite Sisters of Coimbra and was known as Sister Maria Lucia of the Immaculate Heart. Following her death in 2005 at the age of 97, Pope Benedict XVI in 2008 waived the normal five-year waiting period before the start of a canonization cause. Francisco and Jacinta were beautified by Pope John Paul II in 1984 and will be canonized by Pope Francis this year, on May 13th, during the 100th anniversary Mass. There were six Marian apparitions to the shepherd children from May 13th to October 13, 1917.

NOTICIAS DE NUESTRA PARROQUIA

FELIZ DIA DE LAS MADRES

BIENVENIDO PADRE KEVIN O’BRIEN

SYNOPSIS IN ENGLISH: The first item welcomes Rev. Msgr. Kevin O’Brien to our Spanish Mass and Confessions on May 13 and 20, given that Fr. Rojas is on vacation. The second item reveals two anniversaries in May: the centennial of Our Lady’s first apparition at Fatima, Portugal and the 11th anniversary of Fr. Rojas’ priestly ordination. The third item announces the first wedding in Spanish in four years at our parish along with other sacramental milestones of the newly married couple. The fourth item discloses another advance for our Hispanic community: Mass will be offered at our chapel in Spanish at 7 p.m. on Ascension Thursday, May 25.
