Palabra de Dios En la persona de San José, que hoy nos presenta el evangelio, encontramos un camino privilegiado para adentrarnos en el misterio de la Navidad. Guillermo Faber dice de José que “era, en cierto modo, la personificación del desinterés. Toda su vida había de estar dedicada a los otros, y no a sí mismo; tal era su vocación”.

Así s nos aparece la escena de hoy. Ante el estado de gravidez de María, José no se centra en sí mismo. Mantiene la calma en medio de la inquietud y piensa en el bien de María. Está dis-puesto a renunciar a la persona que más quiere y a hacerlo de la manera que menos le hiera. No es el suyo un amor románti-co sino oblativo. Faber lo describe: “ Siempre tranquilo, mo-desto, reservado, sencillo, sin curiosidad, y reposando entera-mente en Dios: tales son las operaciones de la gracia, que apa-recen tan maravillosas en el alma de José”. Tenemos en él una escuela en la que prepararnos para la Navidad. No hay que anticipar nada. La Encarnación es un misterio en el que hemos de ser introducidos suavemente, dejándonos conducir y, como José, aceptando con prontitud lo que se nos muestra.

El papa Francisco ha dicho más de una vez que el tiene una imagen de San José durmiendo y que, cuando se encuentra con algún problema importante lo escribe en un papelito y lo pone debajo de la imagen para que San José lo sueñe. Así San José también es aquel a quien podemos acudir cuando esperamos una especial turbación o nos sentimos desorientados. A través de él podemos introducirnos en la serenidad que nace de la humildad y aprender a ver las cosas desde la luz de Dios. Así podemos reconocer que nuestra vida solo llegamos a entender-la cuando la vemos en el designio de Dios. En la Virgen María y en San José se aclara lo que dice el Concilio Vaticano II: el misterio de cada hombre se ilumina ante la persona de Jesús.

El ángel le dice a José: “Tú le pondrás por nombre Jesús, por-que él salvará al pueblo de sus pecados”. Pronunciemos con san José este dulce nombre, tomando conciencia del gran rega-lo que Dios nos hace. Él viene para liberarnos de la raíz de nuestra tristeza y de la causa de todos los males. Jesús nació para mostrarnos el amor infinito del Padre; un amor que quiere nuestro bien total. Con San José podemos descubrir mejor el gran acontecimiento de la Navidad: Dios se hace hombre para destruir el pecado, para salvar a los hombres.

El ángel también le recuerda a José la profecía de Isaías. En ella Jesús es llamado “Emanuel - que significa Dios-con-nosotros-”. La forma hebrea –una sola palabra-es como una metáfora del misterio de Jesús (verdadero Dios y hombre ver-dadero). San José convivió durante muchos años junto al Niño y su Madre. Sin ser su padre biológico se ha dicho que el amor que José profesaba a Jesús excedía en grandeza y ternura a cuanto amor paternal ha habido jamás. Así, también de san José podemos aprender como corresponder al amor de Dios. Inmediatamente se nos aparece su espíritu de servicio y de renuncia. José colaboró con todo su ser en el misterio de la redención. Señalo san Bernardo que solo a él Dios lo escogió como “coadjutor fidelísimo de su misterio”. Acojámonos a su vera y pidamos su intercesión para vivir intensamente estos últimos días de Adviento y las próximas fiestas de la Navidad. (Magnificat)

Year of Matthew (A) - Advent 4 - December 18, 2016

Women in Jesus' Genealogy (Mathew 1:1-17)

The first gospel begins with a genealogy of Jesus. It

has over 40 names and it reads like a telephone book. Most

people tend to skip this section when they read this gospel.

Women did not typically appear in Jewish family trees

at all, so if you came across a woman's name in such a

thing, you'd know it was put there intentionally.

Mathew goes out of his way to include four women.

The first one is Tamar. She dressed herself as a prostitute

and seduced her father-in-law, Judah. As a result, twin

boys, Perez and Zerah were born - mentioned in the geneal-

ogy. In spite of the ugly and gross sin of incest and prostitu-

tion, she is found in the line of the Messiah. The 2nd

woman is Rahab, a prostitute from the city of Jericho who

helped the Hebrew spies . Her story is found in the book of

Joshua. She was a Canaanite. She is included in the Messi-

anic line, in spite of her nationality and profession.

The 3rd woman Ruth was a Moabite, a cursed people born

of incest. The whole nation was cursed. And the 4th woman

is Bathsheba. Mathew reminds his readers that Solomon’s

mother was ‘Uriah’s wife’ who was involved in an adulter-

ous relationship with King David.

It turns out Jesus of Nazareth had quite the family tree,

and this knife through the David saga was one giant skele-

ton in the closet. But Mathew flung open the closet door

because he knew that if ever there was a reminder of why

this world needs a Savior who is full of grace, this story

provides it. So, there was an act of incest and adultery in the

ancestry of Jesus. One of the progenitors of the Savior was

a prostitute and the bloodline of the Christ was not pure

Jewish blood but had mingled with it the blood of alien peo-

ple.

It was Mathew’s way of telling his readers that Jesus as

God's Son would go on to embrace the whole world and not

just a small part of it. These women are in the Savior’s ge-

nealogy to give us hope, and to foreshadow the kind of peo-

ple he came to save. So Christmas is a feast of hope for all

of us - sinners.

But having established Jesus’ lineage in such utterly

shameful terms then comes the big holy irregularity when

that long 16-verse string of ‘begats’ phrases gets snapped at

the very end as Joseph is not given any credit for the birth

of Jesus.

Joseph is identified only as ‘the husband of Mary’, but not

Jesus’ father. The Davidic ancestry is lent to Jesus, because

he is the adopted son of Joseph.

There is a whole lot of theology tucked into that little de-

tail! Matthew is telling us that although Jesus has a distinct

lineage in the line of David, he was and is finally more than

his ancestry could produce. Jesus may have been the grand-

son and the great-grandson of all those people but in the end

he surpassed them all, too. He is more than David’s son.

He is the Son of God, he is God in flesh, and he is the Lord

of all lords and the King of all kings.
