Child Protection and Creating Safe Environments

Diocesan Policies The Diocese of Erie, along with all dioceses of the United States, has policies and procedures in place to address the national problem of child abuse and to aid in creating safe environments. The diocese is committed to on-going screening and training of paid or volunteer persons who have regular contact with our children and youth under the age of 18. It is committed to the yearly inservicing and training of our children, youth and parents regarding touching-safety and safe environment. To see what the Diocese of Erie is doing to help create safe environments, check out http://www.eriercd.org/protectyouth.htm

Diocesan Code of Conduct The Diocese of Erie is committed to protecting the children and youth who are entrusted to its care and to ensuring that those in ministry with our young people are in right relationship with the children/youth receiving services. To share in the ministry of Christ is a great privilege as well as a tremendous responsibility. The privilege is the joy of sharing in the mission of Jesus Himself. The responsibility is acting in a way that conforms to the attitude and actions of Christ. In this spirit, the diocese has issued a ministerial Code of Conduct, which can be accessed at http://www.eriercd.org/pdf/codeofconduct.pdf. The code is included in the diocesan Policy for the Protection of Children, which also includes mandates for creating safe environments. To read the policy, go to http://www.eriercd.org/pdf/protectionpolicy.pdf. For more information, contact Mrs. Karen Streett, at the diocesan offices at 814-824-1195.

Online Safety Tips for Parents & Kids: Parents should consider having internet accounts in their name with parents having the primary screen name, controlling passwords and using blocking and/or filtering devices. Children should not complete a profile for a service provider and children’s screen names should be nondescript so as not to identify that the user is a child. To see what the Diocese of Erie is doing to help create safe environments, check out http://www.eriercd.org/protectyouth.htm.

everyone has an “I have a dream” sermon up their sleeve] than for the fact that they digested the gospel so well that there was little distance between the words of the gospel and the God who called them to preach it. May you leave your congregations desiring to be as close to God as you must be to share so sweetly the depth of the mystery within. It is a ministry that has come to be known as work that brings you to awe before God and left you speechless. Now, go preach.

Every occasion that is given to you to preach the gospel is both a divinely and humanly offered opportunity. God has ordained you to the ministry and your human peers anticipate that they will be inspired as you have been. The responsibility that may make your knees knock will likely continue to feed the Church as the homilies and instructions of others have done who have gone before you.

You will be sharing faith amid a culture that has grown ritually tone-deaf. The survival of rituals that provided a sacred structure to our lives in times past, rituals like eating supper together after saying grace before meals, the Sunday, pre-dinner praying of

the rosary, kneeling in Church with parents who acted out their piety making words redundant but reassuring nonetheless, and praying to God that he might surround you with messengers of divine protection during maelstroms that felt threatening to you, these gifts of grace are lost. In and of themselves, they do not save us. Nevertheless they do afford a structure that enables each of us to live within reach of all that is redemptive.

May God bless you in your ministry of preaching, Jim. May he give you the same success that enabled the tongue-tied Moses effective before Pharaoh, and Jeremiah who balked because he was too young to speak in the name of God. All of us who have tried to preach for years in a way that we hope would inspire our congregations have found just how patient the people of God are when they give their ministers “A” for effort even when they cannot honestly give the same for inspiration. “Do not worry about what you are to say for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say." (Lk 12: 12) This truth has set us free.

Fr. Dan

An Open Letter and Prayer

First, let it be acknowledged here that our new deacon, James Moss, is preaching for the first time here at St. Marks this weekend. He is beginning a new phase of his ministerial life. Congratulations Jim! May this be the first of many times that you wrestle with the scriptures in preparation to teach, to share faith, to bring all attending Mass at St. Marks closer to the beatific vision.

May you quickly develop a ritual that sustains you in this dimension of your ministry. First, early in the week, the earlier the better, read over the scriptures for the next Sunday. Consume them. Digest them for the sake of the people who will come to Mass. May you soon become the reason the youngest who attend Mass begin to remember the parables of Jesus and the lessons he taught going way beyond words in the process. Become an “enacted parable” as Jesus did. The truth is that the most successful of all homilists, people we recognize in our time as effective preachers like Bishop Fulton J. Sheen, Rev. Billy Graham, Dr. Martin Luther King, and St. Pope John Paul II, are remembered less for what they actually said [not

For Next Week’s Readings Reflecting on the Word:

In this touching and gentle Gospel snippet, the momentum is palpable; you cannot stop any person whose time has come. You cannot stop a people who are vulnerable and hungry for a leader, either. This new shepherd of Israel does not disappoint. He addresses their spiritual hunger. He feeds their languishing, bewildered, disheartened spirits by teaching them “many things.”

Jesus is not a guru who stands beyond or above these people. He is not the philosopher who knows more than they do. He does not toy with the crowd. His heart goes out to them, for he holds them dear. But we know that Jesus didn’t just talk his talk. He spoke with authority; he spoke with passion and acted with compassion. As Paul reminds us in the second reading, Jesus once and for all and forever gathered a people from afar. In his active compassion a new people is created and nourished and protected. A new covenant—a relationship between shepherd and sheep—is forged and sealed.

Questions for the week: Americans value self-reliance and rugged individualism. Though the image of a good shepherd is appealing to us, the image of ourselves as a flock may not be. But we pray as individuals, not as a herd. We say to everyone who would listen, “The Lord is my shepherd, who gives me rest, guides me, refreshes my soul.” I am the object of the Good Shepherd’s regard. Why has the image of a good shepherd appealed to

twenty centuries of Christians? The crowds in today’s Gospel were hungry for good

teaching. Who speaks the truth today? To whom do you listen, and listening, go home satiated and invigorated?

Have you ever listened to a speech that was persuasive or tempting or interesting, but not ultimately satisfying? Copyright © 2002, World Library Publications. All rights reserved
