The Mysteries of the Rosary, Chapter Nineteen: The Na vity of Our Lord, con nued…

Don’t jump to conclusions! The story of our Savior’s origins can remind us of this good advice. How so?

Well, it was common knowledge among Jewish people at the me of the birth of Jesus that the Messiah would come from Bethlehem. They got this from the words of the Prophet Micah, who had said, “But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are li le to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose origin is from of old, from ancient days.” (Micah 5:2)

At the same me, it was widely known that Jesus was from Nazareth. He was called “Jesus of Nazareth.” (Ma hew 21:11) In those days, people didn’t have “last names” as we know them today. Their “second name” alluded to the name of their father (e.g. “Jesus, Son of Joseph”), where they were from (e.g. “Joseph of Arimathea”), something else about them (e.g. “Simon the Zealot”), or a nickname (e.g. “Simon Peter,” that is, “Simon the Rock”). In fact, one person could have a number of “last names.” Also, many people throughout Israel probably knew Jesus. It was a small country, trade was important to the economy, and many people probably travelled around a lot. Plus, Jesus’ occupa on as a carpenter probably made him known to the many people whom he and Saint Joseph did work for. On top of that, we know that people who grew up in Galilee—the northern part of Israel in which Nazareth is located—had an accent that people in Jerusalem, further south, would have no ced. (See Ma hew 26:73)

So, some of Jesus’ fellow Jews jumped to the conclusion that Jesus could not have been the Messiah, reasoning that since the Messiah was to come from Bethlehem and Jesus came from Nazareth, he could not have been the Messiah.

See the flaw in their argument? They didn’t consider that Jesus could have been from both Bethlehem and Nazareth. And of course, that was the case. He was born in Bethlehem because his parents had gone there for the census. But the Holy Family soon returned to Nazareth—a er fleeing to Egypt for a while for safety—because Nazareth was where the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph grew up, married and made their home together. That town was probably also where most of their family and friends were, and where most of Saint Joseph’s customers lived.

The people who jumped to the erroneous conclusion that Jesus couldn’t have been the Messiah obviously didn’t check out all the facts at their disposal before making up their mind. Did they ask Jesus where He was born? Evidently not. Did they ask His mother or any of his other rela ves where Jesus was born? It doesn’t seem so. I don’t know whether this was because they didn’t care about the truth—hatred for Jesus having hardened their hearts and darkened their minds—or whether their oversight was an innocent mistake. God alone knows.

I do know that each one of us human beings encounters many similar situa ons throughout our lives. Not the birth of the Messiah, but other events in which the facts are other than what we might think at first.

In our me, we are experiencing a crisis of truth in Western Civiliza on. Many people no longer think that there is any such thing as objec ve truth, or that if there are objec ve truths, there is no way we can discover them. Some people don’t care about truth; they are only interested in ge ng their way. Others only believe what they personally experience; their world is very small and self-centered.

In contrast, the concept of truth is central to Chris anity. God chose to be born among us as Jesus Christ to show that there is such a thing as truth, that truth can be known and that the truth ma ers. As He said to Pon us Pilate, “For this I was born, and for this I have come into the world, to bear witness to the truth.” (John 18:37) This is so much so that Jesus even called Himself “the Truth.” (John 14:6)

May the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Truth, help us to bear faithful witness to the Truth, wherever that leads.

In Christ with Mary, Father Rudolph

IF THE UNBORN IS A HUMAN BEING, THEN THE POPULAR DEFENSES FOR ABORTION ARE NOT VALID BECAUSE THEY FAIL TO JUSTIFY TAKING AN INNOCENT HUMAN LIFE.

Popular Defense #3: “Women shouldn’t have to carry a child conceived through rape.” A. A pregnancy from rape can be emo onally devasta ng, but why should the child pay with his own life for his father’s crime? B. We would not allow the woman to shoot the rapist a er he’s been caught for her own emo onal relief. 1. If she cannot kill the guilty party to make her feel be er, why should she be allowed to kill an innocent child for the same reason? 2. People may protest by saying the rapist is a human being, but that only furthers our point - being human makes all the difference. C. Clearly, rape is not the issue. D. If the unborn is a human being, she should not be killed just

so the mother isn’t reminded of the trauma c event.

By asking these ques ons (“Columbo Tac c”), we make our opponents establish the reasonable standard and then apply it to their own view.

In essence, we’re forcing them to answer their own challenge.

Popular Defense #4: “Making abor on illegal forces women into dangerous back-alley abor ons.” A. This argument works if we make personal, elec ve

surgeries illegal, buy why should the law be faulted for making the killing of an innocent child risky?

1. The fact that bank-robbing is dangerous to the felon doesn’t seem to be a good reason for making bank robbery legal. 2. As abor on advocate Mary Anne Warren points out, “The fact that restric ng access to abor on has tragic effects does not, in itself, show that the restric ons are unjus fied, since murder is wrong regardless of the consequences forbidding it.” B. Clearly, illegal abor ons are not the real issue. C. If the unborn is a human being and the law forbids an abor on, a woman’s use of a back-alley abor on would be her own choice. No one is “forcing” her.

When answering the defense of rape, ask if it is ever jus fiable to kill an innocent human being (whether unborn or born) who reminds us of a trauma c event. Killing someone who is innocent is never the answer. (The point above can be framed as a ques on using the “Columbo Tac c”: “Would we allow the woman to shoot the rapist for her own emo onal relief a er he’s been caught?”)

Nunilo (also known as Nunilone) and Alodia were sisters who lived at Huesca in Spain during the first half of the ninth century. Their mother was a Chris an, their father a Muslim. When he died, their mother married another Muslim, who treated his step-daughters badly and objected to their prac ce of the Chris an religion. They came under pressure to marry but had decided to devote themselves to a life of virginity in God’s service, so they le home and went to live with a Chris an aunt.

Persecu on of the Chris ans in Spain began in 850 with the publica on of laws against them, For example, it was decreed that the children of Muslim fathers had to follow Islam and not Chris anity. Nunilo and Alodia were too well known in the town to escape the a en ons of the authori es for long and were arrested. The judge tried to win them over to Islam by a mixture of threats and fla ery. When they s ll refused to renounce their faith, he handed them over to a group of disreputable women to see if they could shake the sisters’ fidelity. When this too failed, the judge ordered them to be beheaded. These two loyal sisters triumphed in this way over the lies and threats of the evil one and so entered eternal life in 851. The authori es guarded their bodies for a while to try to prevent the Chris ans from venera ng them as martyrs, but eventually they were brought to a Chris an shrine. Saints Nunilo and Alodia, pray for us!
