The Mysteries of the Rosary, Chapter Nine: The Visita on, con nued…

On the journey of the People of Israel from Egypt to the Promised Land, God told Moses to make a container of acacia wood covered with gold, called an “ark.” On its top was to be a “mercy seat” between two images of cherubs (or cherubim, to use the Hebrew plural form), which are heavenly winged creatures that serve God in his presence. The images of the cherubs were to face each other, with their wings touching and their faces looking down at the mercy seat. It was to be 2.5 cubits long, 1.5 cubits wide and 1.5 cubits high. A cubit is commonly thought to be about 18 inches, so that would make the ark—according to my calcula ons—about 3.75 feet long, 2.25 feet wide and 2.25 feet high.

There were to be two gold rings on each side of the ark to hold poles—like the ark, made of acacia wood overlaid with gold—which were to be used to carry the ark. God told Moses, “In the ark you shall put the covenant that I shall give you. There I will meet with you, and from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubim that are upon the ark of the covenant, I will speak with you of all that I will give you in commandment for the sons of Israel.” (Exodus 25:21-22)

While the People of God were travelling through the desert, the ark was housed in a portable temple called “the tent of mee ng” (Exodus 33:7) A er David became King of all Israel and conquered Jerusalem, be brought the ark to that city with great rejoicing, but it stayed in a tent un l his son Solomon had a stone Temple built for it in Jerusalem.

We are told that when Solomon dedicated the Temple, “there was nothing in the ark except the two tablets of stone which Moses put there at Horeb, where the LORD made a covenant with the sons of Israel, when they came out of the land of Egypt.” (1 Kings 8:9) At that dedica on, “when the priests came out of the holy place, a cloud filled the house of the LORD, so that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud; for the glory of the LORD filed the house of the Lord.” (1 Kings 8:10-11)

At some point in me, as the author of Hebrews tells us, the ark also contained a golden urn containing manna and Aaron’s rod that budded. (Hebrews 9:3-4)

So, what does all this have to do with the Mystery of the Visita on of the Blessed Virgin Mary to Elizabeth? Well, since ancient mes, the Church has called Mary the Ark of the New Covenant. Knowing something about the wood and gold Ark of the Old Covenant can help us keep our minds on some important facts about Mary, the living Ark of the New Covenant. I think God designed it with her in mind.

To start with, let’s simply look at the word “ark.” It brings to mind Noah’s ark, on which humanity and animals were saved from the Great Flood. In a similar way, the Ark of the Old Covenant was a privileged place to meet God, the Savior of the People of Israel. Then, at the right me, the Blessed Virgin Mary brought God the Savior—Jesus Christ—into the world in Person.

Mary did this in many ways. Saying “Yes” to the Incarna on was one. But Mary’s role as the ark of salva on con nued beyond her pregnancy with Jesus. She loved, taught, supported and encouraged him in his boyhood. Then, a er he grew up and began his public ministry, she supported him in his work of redemp on. This is seen at the wedding at Cana, when she told the servants—in reference to Jesus—“Do whatever he tells you.” (John 2:5) At the cross, she was united with Jesus in his suffering and added her own maternal pain to his for the benefit of all people, then and now. And from the cross, Jesus told the Apostle John, “Behold, your mother” (John 19:27) and so indicated that the Blessed Virgin Mary would be the mother of all Chris ans, his spiritual brothers and sisters.

Mary has con nued that motherly role in both public and hidden ways. She has publicly appeared a number of mes, for example at Tepeyac in Mexico, Lourdes in France, Fa ma in Portugal and Kibeho in Rwanda. She has also interceded for countless people who pray for her help, whether through the Rosary or in other ways. Her help is powerful! May we never hesitate to confide our cares to the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Ark of the New Covenant. A grateful son of Mary, Father Rudolph

Anne Marie was born in Jallanges in the Burgundy region of France in 1779. She was the fi h of nine children of a farm family. She had a strong personality and seems to have dominated her siblings, organizing them under a Rule to keep periods of silence and pray the Liturgy of the Hours. In 1792, when an -Catholic revolu onaries were ac ve in Burgundy, she rescued people from a chapel that had been set on fire, warned priests about spies who had arrived to hunt them down and secretly taught the faith to children and prepared them for First Holy Communion in one of her father’s barns. This experience led Anne Marie to decide to devote her life to the educa on of the poor. It was difficult for her at first. A couple of different schools she started failed for lack of support. She tried joining a couple of different religious orders—the Sisters of Charity and the Trappists—but decided they weren’t for her. During this me of discouragement and uncertainty, she had a recurrent vision or dream in which she saw a crowd of poor, sick and crying children, and especially a large crowd of black men, women and children, all calling her “Dear Mother.” She also had an audience with Pope Pius VII, who was visi ng France. He encouraged her to persevere in her voca on. Then the Bishop of Chalon approved the establishment of a religious order called the Congrega on of Saint Joseph of Cluny, with Anne Marie as its Superior. Within a short me, Anne Marie, her brother and some colleagues had organized a school for 80 boys, another one for 123 girls, some workshops, a hostel for the poor, a preparatory seminary and some new houses of the Congrega on in other dioceses. Then the Congrega on was invited to go to French and English colonies in Africa, Asia, La n America and the Pacific Islands to teach freed slaves there. They did so, in spite of opposi on from some colonial farmers from Europe. She saw this ministry as a fulfillment of the dreams she had had years earlier. Ann Marie herself went to live in Senegal in West Africa in 1822, had to return to France because of repeated illnesses, then moved to Guiana in South America. She died on July 15, 1851. Today there are about 2,900 Sisters of Saint Joseph of Cluny serving as missionaries in 60 countries. Blessed Anne Marie Javouhey, pray for us! Thanks for feeding starving children.

St. Raphael’s has a strong and wonderful tradi on of caring for those in need. One example of this is the mes various groups of parishioners have packed food for the organiza on “Feed My Starving Children,” either at their headquarters in Coon Rapids or right here in the parish. I was privileged to be able to go along on one of these trips, organized by the Knights of Columbus Squires (the Knight’s group that is made up of boys). I was impressed by how the Squires and other volunteers from our parish joyfully and enthusias cally gave of their me to prepare nutri ous meals for malnourished children around the world.

Recently I received the 2017-2018 Annual Report from Feed My Starving Children. I was amazed at the number of meals packed this past year—333,447,912. This was done by more than 1.2 million volunteers. The countries whose children received the most aid were Hai (95,637,024 meals), Nicaragua (34,281,792 meals), Philippines (24,493,968 meals), El Salvador (20,406,816 meals) and Guatemala (16,691,616 meals).

My hope is that this will con nue to be a tradi on of our parishioners and that even more of us will pack even more meals this coming year and beyond. Thanks, and God bless you!

Mission Sunday - Sr. Nirmala Update Last year on Mission Sunday a nun, Sr. Nirmala, spoke to St. Raphael’s parishioners about her home parish, one quite different from our own, 10,000 miles away. As you may recall, she spoke about the people who live in her parish and about the challenges they face on a daily basis. For example, she described how everyone is dependent on the monsoon rains not only for their crops but just for drinking water. One year, when the monsoons were late, water had to be strictly ra oned, a bucket per week to cover the necessi es. She shared her message at every Mass, and the parish responded. So, one might ask what more is required? A possible response could be “nothing” given the many compe ng needs which are numerous enough that examples are unnecessary to cite. However, an alternate response could be posed. Please consider the following: A community of faith, distant from us and faceless, rou nely confronts the challenges imposed by Nature and the impact this has on their daily lives. In addi on, they confront another challenge, one not ins gated by Nature but by other people, namely, the right to exist as a faith community. And yet, like the early Chris ans, they plod on in the hope that God will provide. Amidst these obstacles, Sr. Nirmala and her community minister to those in need whether Chris an or not. For example, among other things, they operate three schools as part of an effort to provide an educa on to the children who reside in Sr. Nirmala’s home parish. Just as Chris ans elsewhere struggle in faith, so it is with the people served by Sr. Nirmala and her fellow sisters. Although the parish responded to Sr. Nimala’s request for assistance when she visited with us, addi onal funds are needed. For example, all three schools have a list of repairs that include such basic items as doors, windows, bathrooms, etc. Therefore, whatever you can offer will be welcome and greatly appreciated by Sr. Nimala and the people she serves. Thank you. Dona ons may be forwarded to the following address and please note St. Raphael on the memo line: CSA Sisters 301 Tilden Street Kenedy, TX 78119

Dear Saint Raphael Parishioners, Our Athle c Department would like to thank all the students that a ended our Saints Sports camp in June. We are thankful for the dona ons of water, Gatorade, and the many treats sent to us for our morning snack and lunch breaks. We were so blessed throughout our week as we grew in our faith, team leadership skills, group sharing mes, and fundamentals of soccer, football, Cross-Country, dance, basketball, volleyball, baseball and so ball. Our camp coaches and aides gave their very best each week to help our students grow in our camp theme, “4 HG “ (For His Glory), which was on our camp t-shirts. Our goal was to serve, to know, and to love our Lord and each other more. A special thank you to the Knights of Columbus who helped sponsor our Sports Camp this year. In Christ’s Love, Mr. J and Saints Camp Coaches
