A FEW WORDS FROM OUR PASTOR
Happy Fourth of July everyone! I hope and pray that you are able to
enjoy a little time off this week to relax and enjoy yourself. We now officially begin
the summer season and the continued heat that comes along with it. But I would like
to take a few sentences to highlight the importance of the holiday we celebrate today—
Independence Day. If you ever had the opportunity to watch “the tonight show with
Jay Leno” (of happy memory), he had a recurring segment on called “Jaywalking.”
this segment involved Jay Leno going out onto the street (usually on the grounds of
Hollywood’s Universal Studios Amusement Park) and asking ordinary passersby
questions about particular events or people. Sometimes he’ll show someone a picture
of someone famous and ask them to identify the person in question. Other times he’ll
ask them the significance of a particular famous holiday. Each year about this time, he
would devote the entire segment of “Jaywalking” to asking questions about the
significance of July 4th and America’s Declaration of Independence. I remember
watching this particular segment a few years ago regarding people’s knowledge about
Independence Day and I was appalled at the lack of knowledge possessed by most of
the people Mr. Leno interviewed. (I know, I know...perhaps he cut out those persons
who knew the answers and left in those who weren’t as knowledgeable...but still…). I
am a firm believer that we ought to know the basics of our country’s history. While I
admit I am no expert on everything “history” I do know something about the “basics.”
This period in our nation’s history was quite exciting as a new nation was being forged
and strong personalities emerged as our new nations’ leaders. Battles were fought and
people lost their lives defending this new found freedom being enjoyed by people who
would eventually become known as “Americans.” I think we sometimes forget that
“freedom” always comes with a price. Even today, women and men continue to lose
their lives defending our freedom. We should never forget them. This fourth of July,
I invite you to take a moment and bow your head in silent prayer for a few minutes.
Thank God for those women and men who braved the unknown in search of freedom;
thank God for our founding Fathers who stood tall in their deliberations and refused to
back down until a Declaration of Independence was forged; and thank God for all
those persons who have given their lives in service to our country, protecting and
defending our freedom these last 241 years. Finally, why not pick up a book on
America’s early history and read a new the story of our country’s birth? It truly is a
fascinating story never to be forgotten. (I also recommend a viewing of HBO’s
seven-part 2008 mini-series John Adams.) Another great read is 1776 (2006) by John
McCullough. Just some thoughts as we move into summer! For those of you with
cable, TCM usually shows all patriotic movies on July 4th. One of my favorites is the
movie 1776, adapted from a Broadway musical with the same title. It’s a great
re-telling of just how much effort went into the composition and ratification of our
Declaration of Independence.
Have a great week everyone.

A REMINDER FOR OUR CHILDREN
We want to remind all the children of our
parish family that just because St. Saviour Catholic
Academy and our Religious Education classes
might be finished for the summer—it DOES NOT
mean that your obligation to attend Sunday
Eucharist ceases as well. Parents—please be sure
to continue bringing your child(ren) to Eucharist
each Sunday throughout the summer months. It is
important that our children receive Jesus in the
Eucharist each week!
GOING ON VACATION?
Remember, St. Savoiur Parish still needs your
weekly offering!
While you are on vacation our bills still keep
coming! Our church needs YOU to help support the
preaching of the Gospel, its administration of the
Sacraments, keeping its lights and air conditioning
on all summer, and helping us teach our children
about God. Without your Weekly Offering we could
not accomplish all that we do. Thank you for your
weekly donations!
Also, while vacationing this summer, be sure to
include your weekly Mass obligation in your plans.
For Mass schedules around the United States, go to
www.masstimes.org. Now there can be no more
excuses why you cannot attend Mass while you are
on vacation!

ADULT ALTAR SERVERS NEEDED
We are looking for a few adult parishioners
who are willing to volunteer to minister as
altar servers at our 5:00 p.m. evening Mass
on both Saturdays & Sundays. It would
require carrying the Processional Cross at
the beginning and end of Mass, holding the
binder for the priest at the appropriate times
during Mass, and preparing the altar at the
offertory and clearing off the altar following
communion. Any adults who might be
interested in helping us out are asked to call
Fr. Frank or Fr. Kevin at the Rectory ASAP.
