RESURRECTION!

SOLEMNITY OF THE NATIVITY OF SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST

Who doesn’t like a good celebration? The Church has many and today we celebrate one of them. Sunday is when we celebrate the Lord’s paschal

mystery and the promise of salvation. We call it ‘a little Easter’. Easter is referred to as the ‘solemnity of solemnities’. They are feasts of the highest

order in our liturgical celebrations and are observed by the universal church. If a solemnity falls on a Sunday, it is considered so important that its celebration takes over and its readings are used instead of the normal

Sunday readings. So today we leave behind the readings of the 12th Sunday in Ordinary time.

We celebrate the great solemnity of St. John the Baptist, the forerunner of Jesus Christ, whose entrance into the salvation history story marked a signif-icant moment. He was to foretell the birth of the Messiah, Jesus Christ and prepare the way for His coming. We are all familiar with the story of John wandering in the desert existing on a diet of locusts and wild honey. But

today I would like to share with you a poem to ponder by J. Janda

You are so afraid so worried I know you are good in your heart

I know you want to do what is right I know all about you

I watched you grow in your mother’s womb—

Before you were born I spoke your name I know when you stand up—when you sit down

Nothing is hidden from me Come, waste some time with me.

J. Janda

…They were going to call him Zechariah after his father, but his mother said in reply, ‘No. He will be called John’ (Gospel) Why John and not Zechariah after his father? Perhaps it is because his name

had a Hebrew root that meant (approximately) ‘Yahweh has shown favor,’ an indication of John’s role in salvation history.

Have a blessed day and week to come,

Sister Barbara
