WHAT IS

FAITH?

Here are some answers to why people have faith in God: Faith is a good thing… Believing in God makes me happy… I don't want to go to

hell… I don't lose anything by believing in God... Better safe than sorry… I need God to protect me… Miracles come from God… I want to go to heaven.

These reasons for believing in God are alright, but the Bible teaches us that faith is something deeper and more profound.

Biblical faith is not something we do now in order to get something later. Biblical faith is not something we have for the sake of something else. Biblical faith is not a way of talking God into working miracles. Biblical faith is not a ticket to heaven.

Biblical faith is its own end. Biblical faith is not a means to an end. Biblical faith is what God is doing on earth now. Biblical faith is how I am to live in honest relationship with truth, that is, with God right now.

Biblical faith has one be willing to say: “Even if there is no heaven, I would still live in the way I am living, that is, living in the Spirit of God, obeying His commandments, because it is so worthwhile now.”

Faith is not a blind leap. It is a reasonable decision based on the fact of God’s existence, and on who He is, and on what He has done, and what He promises.

Abraham is our “father in faith.” He is the one through whom God started his plan of salvation that climaxed in Jesus. We learn from Abraham that faith is going from what we are sure of to a place where we are not sure of. Faith is a journey.

Faith is letting go of control. In faith we are not in control. We give God control of our lives.

To live IN FAITH means to make every decision and choice in everyday life based on our faith.

Our faith is to be lived. Faith defines our relationship with God. We are to base every decision of our everyday life on our faith.

Our faith is a belief in a person — the Person of God. It is belief in the Person of Jesus Christ.

To grow in faith, you need to pray. To grow in faith, you need to know God’s Word. To grow in faith, you need to “practice your faith” within the Church established by Jesus Christ.

Faith is not wishful thinking, or fantasy, or personal whim. There is an objectivity to faith, namely, the rock foundation of God, who is truth, and who has revealed His truth. Jesus Christ is the ultimate revelation of God the Father to humankind. Put your faith in Him.

Fr. Dave

RCIA The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

PRISON MINISTRY “Remember those who are in prison, as if in prison with them” (Heb 13:3). Though society has good reasons to incarcerate some people, they also have a claim on our mercy. Time in prison gives a person the opportunity to do penance, but friendship and prayer promote healing and reformation.

We are blessed with efforts toward this in our own parish. Deacon Ed Mohrbacher is involved in prison ministry outreach at the Danville Correctional Center, and he has invited us to help. Here’s how:

1. A retreat for those at Danville prison will be held the 2nd weekend of September. Volunteers are needed to partici-pate with the retreat. They do not spend the night. Ques-

tions? Call Deacon Ed, 649-5083, before August 15th.

2. Write letters of encouragement (do not sign your name, use an anonymous closing such as, Brother or Sister in Christ). Leave them in the Parish Office for Deacon Ed to pick up. There is no deadline for this, the need is ongoing.

Finally, during August we will collect paperback books for prisoners. No hardbacks or magazines. Bring them to the Parish Office. Questions? Call Tracy Duchinsky, 721-2524

FAMILY FORMATION A Whole Family Approach to

Learning and Living the Catholic Faith

The Family Formation Program at Holy Cross serves families with children in Grades K-6. Families are support-ed and encouraged in their efforts to pray, worship, and grow in faith together as a Catholic family.

For families whose children are not enrolled in a Catholic school, Family Formation fulfills the need for religious education and sacramental preparation. However, all families with children in Grades K-6 are invited to come and be part of the Family Formation community.

For more information or if you would like to register for this year, please contact Cindy Howie at 352-8748. Deadline for registration is Monday, August 15th.

1ST, 2ND, AND 3RD YEAR CONFIRMATION CLASSES

Confirmation preparation classes for students attending public schools begin in September. Confirmation prepar-ation is a 3-year cycle that typically begins with monthly classes in 6th and 7th grade, and continues with weekly classes for 8th grade.

Registration forms can be sent to you, or pick one up at the Parish Office. Please return them to the Office by Monday, August 15th. Questions? Call the Parish Office at 352-8748.

CHILDREN’S RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

Being Catholic takes more than simply believing in God. Jesus wants you to be more than just a believer; He wants you to be His disciple and friend. To help you answer this call to deeper friendship with Christ, Holy Cross Parish will begin 9 sessions of Follow Me: Meeting Jesus in the Gos-pel of John.

When? Monday, Sept. 19th, at 6:30 p.m., or Tuesday, Sept. 20th, at 9:30 a.m.

Follow Me will help you see how God—and only God—can satisfy the deepest desires of your heart.

To register, call the Parish Office at 352-8748. Cost is $17 for the workbook.

THE CATECHESIS OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD

The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is offered for pre-school children and is available at Holy Cross. It is an ap-proach to the religious formation of children that is rooted in the Bible, the liturgy of the Church, and the educational principles of Maria Montessori. The children come to an ’atrium’ where they are given the opportunity to inde-pendently discover the beauty of the Catholic faith and their role as part of the body of Christ.

If you would like your preschooler to participate in this ex-ceptional program, please call Cindy Howie at 352-8748.
