ALL ARE WELCOME AT THE BETHLEHEM CRIB. In celebrating the Feast of the Epiphany, may the story of the Epiphany be our story as well. Like the magi, we are seekers searching for an encounter with the Lord, a deeper relationship with Jesus in 2019. In celebrating the Feast of the Epiphany, we celebrate the Good News of the birth of Jesus "breaking out" beyond the boundaries of Israel, and being made known to all the peoples of the world - to every tribe, and tongue, and people, and nation. So, we celebrate the Savior who comes to the Gentiles. This is symbolized by the three wise men, who came from the East to welcome and worship Him. "Epiphany" - means "revealed". But what is it, exactly, that is revealed to the magi? It's revealed that God loves all human beings, not just one kind. It's revealed that God has a plan to save us from the dead end of sin and selfishness, and love us back from the brink of hatred, jealousy, and greed that threatens to destroy us. It's revealed that God chose to do this through a small, humble and unassuming family from a poor neighborhood so that the poor and the rich could recognize the love at the heart of this world- transforming event. Its revealed that there were no outsiders at the Bethlehem crib. There was no racism. All were welcome. Jesus welcomed everyone -- the ox and the ass, the shepherds and magi, poor and rich, the Jews and Gentiles. He came for us all. He would reject no one, as he would accept the unique gifts of each. Please note well in the Christmas mystery that it is not just the magi who are seekers. God is a seeker. We are sought by a God who has become one of us and who hunts us down with His love. In the Epiphany mystery, we need to allow ourselves to be found by the love of the Christ child. Have a Blessed Epiphany Day.

It's revealed that God chose to do this through a small, humble and unassuming family from a poor neighborhood so that the poor and the rich could recognize the love at the heart of this world-transforming event.

It’s revealed that there were no outsiders at the Bethlehem crib.

Have a Blessed Epiphany Day.

filled with cream or chocolate and are decorated with a paper crown. There is normally a figure of a king (if you find that you can wear the crown) and a dried bean (if you find that you're meant to pay for the cake!). In Catalonia it's known as a Tortell or Gâteau des Rois and is stuffed with marzipan.

In France you might eat a 'Galette des Rois', a type of flat almond cake. It has a toy crown cooked inside it and is decorated on top with a gold paper crown.

There are similar traditions in Mexico where Epiphany is known as 'El Dia de los Reyes' (the day of The Three Kings). It's traditional to eat a special cake called 'Rosca de Reyes' (Three Kings Cake). A figure of Baby Jesus is hidden inside the cake. Whoever has the baby Jesus in their piece of cake is the 'Godparent' of Jesus for that year.

In Portugal, people take part in Epiphany carol singing known as the 'Janeiras' (January songs). On the Island of Maderia they're known as the 'Cantar os Reis' (singing the kings).

In Italy, some children get their presents on Epiphany instead of Christmas. They celebrate an old lady called 'Befana' who brings the gifts to them. Children put stockings up by the fireplace for Befana to fill.

In Austria and Germany, at Epiphany, some people write a special sign in chalk over their front door. It's a reminder of the Wise Men that visited the baby Jesus and is a request for Jesus to protect the house for the coming year.

In Belgium and Poland, children dress up as the three wise men and go from door to door to sing songs and people give them money or sweets, kind of like Trick or Treating on Halloween.

Epiphany Around the World

While Christmas ends for many people on Dec. 26, throughout Christian history Christmas lasts for twelve days – all the way until Jan. 6.

This feast marking the end of Christmas is called “Epiphany.” The feast focuses on the arrival of the Three Wise Men to Bethlehem, and Jesus’ revelation to all the people of the world.

Spain: on Epiphany morning you might go to the local bakers and buy a special cake/pastry called a 'Roscón' (meaning a ring-shaped roll). They are normally
