    My Dear Parishioners,

As most of you know, my father died this past August. Any of us who have ever experienced the death of someone we know and love, especially a family member, realize how challenging, difficult, sad and exhausting this can be. However, what has made it more tolerable is that 1) my father had a very strong faith in Jesus and he loved and practiced his Catholic faith and 2) the incredible support I have received from so many friends and parishioners. And that’s the

reason for this letter, to thank all of you for your visit, or Mass card or prayers. My family and I were overwhelmed with the number of people who visited at the funeral home and the number of cards we have received. I think it is fair to say that we, everyone reading this, believe in the power of prayer, and all your prayers were appreciated and, I believe, answered. It is difficult for me to send a personal thank you to everyone in the parish, so I am asking you to please accept this as my thank you. Every prayer, every card and every visit was, and is, very much appreciated. Please be assured of my prayers for each of you. Thank you all!

AdventThe first day of Advent is today. Advent is the first day of the new liturgical year, the New Year for the church. It is also a reminder for all of us to keep the spirit of Christmas alive in our hearts in everything we do. We are preparing not only for Christmas day, but we are spiritually preparing to live in the spirit of Christ; a spirit of generosity, a spirit of giving, a spirit of forgiving.

One simple thing I would like to suggest, is to participate in our one year long tradition of our “Christmas Card Hall of Fame”. Please send a Christmas card to the parish addressed to me, and we will hang it up in the South 6th Street hallway. Last year we collected over two hundred cards and the hallway looked festive and beautiful. It was fun and made for a positive spirit. Please take the time to send your card, and the sooner the better. For a parish this size, we should have at least 300 cards. Please be a part of it.

The Christmas Pageant for ChristmasOur Christmas Pageant this year will be on a Friday evening, December 15th at 7:00 P.M. One reason for the change is so we can have more time and be a little more creative, and less rushed. Please see the bulletin announcement in this bulletin and contact Fred. There is no limit and NO favoritism, there will be a role for everyone! Please encourage your children to sign up.

Christmas Schedule This YearBecause Christmas falls on a Sunday this year, the requirements for Mass can be very confusing. Please read the schedule carefully. We should plan on attending Mass on Sunday, December 24th which is the last week of Advent, “AND” Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. This is a little tricky but is something we should take seriously. So it is possible, to come to Mass two times in one day. An example is: Sunday, December 24th for Sunday morning Mass and 4:00 P.M. Christmas eve, which also happens to be a Sunday this year, December 24th. I realize this may seem unrealistic to ask your children to come to Mass twice in one day or for two consecutive days but this can also be a wonderful teaching moment: to teach our children and remind ourselves give to God, what belongs to God.

Advent wreathIf anyone, preferably 18 and younger, would like to light the Advent wreath on any of our Saturday evening or Sunday morning Masses, please send me an email and I will arrange it.

Thanks for all you do and May God Bless you!

    Fr. Grieco

    DEACON LACHLAN

I was reading a story about the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree the other day. This year the tree comes from State College Pennsylvania, and was earmarked seven years ago as a potential candidate for the job. Apparently, the head gardener from the Rockefeller Plaza complex was attending a football game in State College, and saw the tree growing nearby. He contacted the owner of the property, and ‘reserved’ the tree until it was ready for the job. The ‘tree’ at Rockefeller Center is always a big attraction for New Yorkers…and others….each year.

Here at Holy Spirit we too have a tree……not quite so large…..and I have no idea where it comes from…..but I do know that it will be a beautifully decorated tree. Thanks to the Knights of Columbus, our tree will be in place, decorated and formally switched on this Tuesday evening at 8pm. This ceremony is part of the K of C tradition whereby K of C councils across the country perform their ‘Light up for Christ’ ceremony. This lighting ceremony which is now part of the Knights calendar in this country and around the world, was actually started here in NHP by our own council #2852. They bring great credit to our community.

The whole ‘Light up for Christ’ initiative was begun as a way to counteract the secularism that has crept into our celebration of the birth of our Savior. Everyone enjoys Christmas and the many activities that surround it, but it’s important that we don’t forget…as sadly many do…why we are celebrating. And that is the beauty of the ‘Light up for Christ’ celebration. It is a family evening with plenty of fun, but reminds us that as the old saying goes….’Jesus is the reason for the season.’

So please come along this Tuesday December 5th for our festivities. While the event is sponsored by the knights, it is open to all parishioners and friends, and we look forward to welcoming our neighbors from Notre Dame and Our Lady of Snows who are part of K of C Council 2852. The program begins at 7:30 pm with Christmas Carols, and then the Nativity Scene and the Christmas Tree will be blessed by Fr. Grieco and illuminated at 8 pm. Hot chocolate and cookies will be served in the cafeteria.

Please try to join us. While this is a fun evening, it is also a very public statement of who we are as followers of Jesus Christ. We will be gathered right on Jericho, for all to see, making our mark as Catholic Christians, and announcing to the community that very soon the Savior of the World will be coming among us, and that this momentous event is the real reason for the celebrations at this time of year.

Our gratitude to Council #2852 Knights of Columbus for all their hard work in putting together this event, and for their continued efforts to promote the Faith in the workplace and in the marketplace.

May almighty God bless us, protect us from all evil, and lead us into everlasting life. Amen.

Light Up for ChristTuesday, December 5, 2017

    Everyone is welcome!

Join the Knights of Columbus in their annual and worldwide lighting of the Christmas Tree and Nativity Scene at 7:30 pm at Holy Spirit Church Tuesday, December 5.

We will join our brother Knights and their fami-lies at Councils throughout the world as our switch is turned on and our freshly cut tree shines brightly, announcing the coming of Christ’s birthday. Join us for refreshments in Holy Spirit Church Cafeteria immediately following the ceremony.

A “Knight” Before ChristmasAs we get closer to Christmas, don’t forget that your holiday celebration is the perfect time to invite the men of our Parish to join the Order of the Knights of Columbus. Stop by our table after the Lighting Ceremony to obtain the form for joining the Knights of Columbus.

The church building will be open from

7:00 am to 6:00 pm Monday through Saturday. This change

will be in effect through the springtime, 2018.

The church building will continue to remain open until

    2:00 pm Sundays.

    Christmas Cards

Please send a Christmas card to the parish so we can include you and your family in our parish Christmas Hall of Fame. We don’t want your family to be left out. Parishioners of all ages are

    welcome.

We will hang these cards in the hallway as you enter the 6th Street entrance of the Church.

Cards may be sent or brought to the Rectory to the attention of Fr. Grieco, but address it. “Dear parishioners of Holy Spirit parish.”
