Dear Friends:

Truly the Lord is risen! He is risen indeed! Today we speak these words which echo back to the first days of Christ’s resurrection. After walking with Christ on the road to Calvary, we now joyfully go forth as the disciples did on the road to Emmaus with hearts burning within us. We celebrate the moment when Christ conquered death and gave us all hope of new life.

Even after nearly 2,000 years, that moment of the Resurrection has not lost any of its power. While myths and stories eventually fade, we celebrate a historical fact, a living Person who left behind lasting evidence of his wonders, evidence that the world still seeks to understand.

This is especially true today, as we find ourselves in an historic moment—archeologists have uncovered the site of Jesus’ resurrection for the first time in nearly 500 years. Within the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, scholars have restored and conducted research on the tomb of Jesus, also known as the Aedicule. Preliminary findings confirm that the heart of the structure is the same tomb that Roman Christians discovered and venerated as early as 326AD.

These findings offer us a great source of confidence in our faith. Scientific progress, rather than finding evidence against what we believe, through missionary archeology has given us a stronger connection with the place of Christ’s burial and resurrection. Further, it provides a powerful image as we reflect upon our own spiritual lives this Easter.

In its 2,000-year history, Christ’s tomb has endured many trials. It was covered over by slabs of stone, it withstood earthquakes, fires and the destruction of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and many believed it had been lost. So too the life of Christ in our hearts can experience highs and lows—it may be covered over with our worries and concerns, it may be jeopardized in times of doubt and confusion, or we may even believe it has faded away.

Yet just as archeologists have opened up this holy site today, we are called this Easter to open our hearts once again to the power of Christ’s love and mercy. We are called to remove the barriers from our hearts and allow Christ’s glorified wounds to touch our wounds and the wounds of all humanity.

We profoundly experience this reality at the Easter Vigil. In the darkness of the night and in the darkness of our lives, the light of Christ is ignited. Beginning with the Paschal candle, that light is passed on from person to person until the Church is made radiant. The darkness in our hearts is dispelled, and even more beautifully, it is dispelled by the light that is shared by our brothers and sisters in faith. We see in a deeply moving way that Christ’s light is spread by each of us who carry him with us. In that moment of unity and love, as the Exsultet proclaims, the Church shakes with joy.

Bishop’s Easter Greeting

DIOCESE OF ROCKVILLE CENTRE OFFICE OF THE BISHOP The excitement of that evening is not limited to one day, but extends throughout the eight-day Easter Octave. Each day we are given another story of the Risen Christ, another reason to rejoice. We witness the sorrow of the devoted women at the tomb transform into joy, we see the despair of Christ’s disciples transform into hope, and we watch the doubt of St. Thomas transform into faith. And on Divine Mercy Sunday, we celebrate the gift of God’s mercy that touches the struggles of our own lives and transforms them into opportunities to grow in holiness. On that day we celebrate the true source of joy in the Gospel, the Good News: we are forgiven our sins and are called by God to strive for sanctity. During this joyous season then, we recognize that the Risen Christ’s presence, his touch, his personal words of as-surance tangibly changed the lives of his followers, as they can change our own lives even today. Though Christ ascended into heaven, we remember that we can still have a personal relationship with him through the gifts of the Holy Spirit and the Church which were given at Pentecost. His presence has never left us. Indeed most powerfully, Christ’s presence remains in the Eucharist. While history tells us Christ lived 2,000 years ago, we know he still lives today. He is waiting in our Churches for us to come spend time with him. He is waiting in our tabernacles for us to come adore him. He is waiting for us to join him at the Mass each Sunday, where we can share in his suffering, death, and resurrection as if we were by his side those many years ago. We are challenged this Easter to allow Christ to change our lives by his healing touch which gives faith, hope, and love. We commit ourselves to a radical fidelity to Sunday Mass, where Christ can enter our hearts and begin to transform them. And transformed, our hearts will burn within us, driving us all to spread the light of Christ and bring about dramatic missionary growth here in the Diocese of Rockville Centre and beyond.

Happy Easter !

It is important that I thank all of our parishioners for the role they play in making Holy Spirit the wonderful parish it is. Everyone has a role and collectively, I believe, we do a good job. It is also nice to have so many visitors and guests joining us for our Easter celebration, I hope you find it inspiring. No matter who you are, how often you come, or where you live, you are always welcome. A special thank you to the youth of our parish. Even in all your busyness, you make an effort to participate in your parish. We do not play favorites, so any teenager is welcome to be involved in any way they choose. Our pre-teens are welcome too and we are relying on them to keep this parish vibrant for many years. Most of all, we thank God for our great gift of faith and we thank Jesus, His only Son, for making the ultimate sacrifice so we can have life; and have it more abundantly! Easter is the most important day of the year for all Christians because with the Resurrection we have everything and without it we have nothing. Have a Blessed and Happy Easter and be assured of my daily prayers for all parishioners. Peace, Fr. Grieco “God exists: that is the real message of Easter. Anyone who even begins to grasp what this means also knows what it means to be redeemed.” (Pope Benedict XVI)

Deacon Lachlan

Over the centuries many of the greatest artists have depicted scenes from the Resurrection. Sometimes only Jesus is depicted…sometimes we see Jesus and the angel. Very often Mary Magdalene is shown alone, and sometimes with some of the other women. Occasionally we see a soldier standing guard. Each of these paintings portrays for us…. in its own way, the scene on that Resurrection morning. The great thing about these works of art is that they are a teaching tool ….pointing out for us some of the truths of that glorious morning.

When we see in a painting the open tomb….this symbolizes Christ’s triumph over death. As followers of Jesus Christ we believe that by His Resurrection, He has triumphed over sin and death In many paintings Christ is shown unclothed, because we know that only the shroud covered him in the tomb. We know also that the women disciples were first on the scene, so paintings often show the 'Noli me tangere' scene with Mary Magdalene, and the holy women at the sepulcher. ‘Noli me tangere’ means …do not touch me….the Glorified Christ had to return to his Father before he could mix once again with his disciples. Paintings from 14th and 15th century Italy often show an apparently weightless figure of Christ floating in the air, perhaps framed by rays of light which give the appearance of an Ascension.

But the predominant type, originating in the later Middle Ages and followed by the Renais-

sance, shows the Savior firmly on the ground, holding the banner of the Resurrection with its red cross, ei-ther standing upright in the open sarcophagus or in the act of stepping out of it.

The picture shown here was painted in 1440 by Fra Angelico. I chose this particular one because it gives us a little taste of each of the characters in one painting. The soldiers are missing…..but the account of the sol-diers appears only in Matthews Gospel…so we don’t see them in too many paintings. So, next time you look at a painting of the Resurrection look for some of the points mentioned above. Look to see who is in the picture. Always take time to enjoy the beauty of these paintings and other religious art…..beautiful works by people who have been given a great talent by God…..a talent used to reflect for us the beauty of our Catholic faith. A Blessed Easter to All!

May Almighty God bless, us protect us from all evil, and lead us into everlasting life. Amen

Observances for the Week of April 1, 2018 Sunday: Easter Sunday Next Sunday: Divine Mercy Sunday

April 1, 2018 Easter Sunday The first light of Easter dawn had begun to creep

over the horizon. The steadfast women from Friday’s gory events are returning again to the body of their Lord. “Who will roll back the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?” How quickly we return to mundane concerns and how thoroughly God wants to surprise us! Imagine the utter shock upon seeing the stone rolled away, the tomb empty, and a stranger clothed in light proclaiming the impossible. “You seek Jesus of Nazareth, the crucified. He has been raised; he is not here.” He is risen indeed and the world will never be the same.

We know from other Gospel passages that Mary Magdalene made haste to the disciples to proclaim the Good News. We know that Peter and John rushed to the tomb to see for themselves. We know that the wonder and awe of the Resurrection permeated the lives of the apostles until their own dying day.

Can we comprehend the utterly world-changing nature of this surprise? The historical reanimation of a dead man is of no real value to us. But we know that Easter Sunday is so much more. By the Resurrection of Jesus, life has triumphed over death for us all. The gates of heaven are opened and the treasury of graces is poured out upon the here and now. This Resurrec-tion Day, let us draw near, amazed yet unafraid, to the risen Christ. Let us recall the words of Pope Emeri-tus Benedict XVI, “Jesus is not a character from the past. He lives, and he walks before us as one who is alive, he calls us to follow him, the living one, and in this way to discover for ourselves the path of life” (Easter Vigil, April 15, 2006).

PARISH OFFERING The collection for last week, Sunday, March 25th, 2018 was $13,655.00.

Your kindhearted generosity to Holy Spirit Church

is very much appreciated.

Living Stewardship We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish whose lives reflect the joy of Christ’s Resurrection.

Alleluia! Christ is risen and is victorious over sin and death!

We are good stewards of our faith if, like St. Paul, we share this good news whenever and wherever we can.

125th Anniversary Celebration

-9

We have come a long way since then, thanks to the wonderful priests, sisters, and parishioners who have worked so hard over the years to build up the Faith here in New Hyde Park. Of course we must also give credit to our patron, The Holy Spirit who is always watching over us and protecting us.

“Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful, and kindle in them the fire of your love”.

Stay tuned for many events planned here at Holy Spirit as we celebrate the founding of our parish 125 year ago!

This is an exciting time for us all at Holy Spirit!

The building in the picture above is familiar to most of us. It is the former Henry’s Inn, now known as The Olde Trading Post.

Jola Griffen, Chris Hanat, Genevieve Early, Ninabeth Palces, Vincent Sauchelli, Florence Krupski, Marie Lappin, Michael McGovern, Jose-phine Cassese, Emelia Arroyo, Joe and Flo Grimm, Eileen Hammond, Doug Wilson, Janet Rossano, Baby Chase, Patty Scorcia, Frank Se-quino, Lauren Singer, Antoinette Biddick, Chisalo Family, Marilyn Deeken, Bernard Duffy

In 1893 it was known as Old Miller’s Hall and it was a General Store on the ground floor. Up-stairs was a meeting space used by various groups. On June 18th, 1893 the first ever Mass celebrated in New Hyde Park took place here...and those were the humble beginnings of Holy Spirit Parish.
