2 Parish Life Weekly Schedule

The folks in the media sometimes make for easy targets, especially when they address matters of faith. For a while, it seemed

every time Pope Francis sneezed there was a headline in thirty-point font. I remember, for example, a chance remark he made a couple years ago, inviting the parents of a hungry infant at a group baptism to feed their fussing child if it was needed, becoming the story: “Pope Encourages Breastfeeding.” This time the press may be on to something. Eighteen months ago I commented here in response to another screaming headline, “Pope Changes Lord’s Prayer.” Francis wasn’t actually changing the words of the Our Father, but putting his two cents in on a debate translators and pastoral leaders had been having about the prayer’s last line for some time. “Lead us not into temptation” is a rather exact English translation of the Latin version of the prayer, which reads “ne nos inducas in tentationem.” The problem is that “lead us not” can give the impression that God goes around setting traps for us. Just as we touched up the language of the English Missal about eight years ago, French and Italian-speaking Catholics are now doing the same … and the revised translations of the Lord’s Prayer those language groups are using are freer, following the current translation used in the Pope’s native Spanish. There, “ne nos inducas in tentationem,” has been rendered “do not let us fall into temptation.” Either translation is justifiable. The Pope had just commented that he liked the change Italian and French Catholics were making, but he hadn’t mandated, or even initiated it. While Rome does give oversight to translations of our liturgical language, it is our Bishops who hold the real power. Indeed, Pope Francis deepened that with a statement he made about a year ago. Last time I talked about this, I wrote that after the changes we had gone through just a few years ago, I couldn’t imagine our Bishops moving on this right now. The updated English Missal was something of a struggle, and making changes again would be re-opening the proverbial can of worms. Moreover, for ecumenical reasons, it is hard to imagine all Christians who use the current version agreeing to revise their translations. As well, with the repeated failures on the Bishops’ part to police their fellow Bishops on the protection of young people on the sexual abuse front, they have lost their voices (and a lot of their moral authority) in the eyes of Catholic faithful. I said, eighteen months ago, that I wouldn’t be expecting any adjustments in the Lord’s Prayer until the Bishops clean up their act and regain their credibility. Well, that’s where I could be wrong. The Bishops of Ireland, another English-speaking province of the Church of course, have gone on record as being open to a language change in the Lord’s Prayer. At some point, of course, the Lord’s Prayer will have to be revised. The current English translation dates from the 1750’s, and not too many people use words like “art” and “thy” anymore. Still, my money is on the American Bishops not moving on this detail. I’m expecting to be saying, “lead us not into temptation,” for a good long while. Fr. Mark

Readings for the Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time (June 30)

(1 Kings 19:16b, 19-21; Psalm 16:1-2,5,7-10; Galatians 5:1,13-18; Luke 9:51-62)

Today’s First Reading and Gospel show us different reactions to the call of discipleship. When the great prophet, Elijah, designates Elisha to be his successor, the young man asks to see his parents for a farewell—and Elijah is put off by his hesitation. In the Gospel, Jesus invites people to follow him, and they too hesitate for one reason or another. Jesus’ and Elisha’s responses, when taken literally, seem harsh, but they convey a central tenant of discipleship: it must be wholehearted. Can you think of a different situation where to be only mildly com-mitted to something (like a marriage) can spell disaster? Where do you see yourself in your commitment to disciple-ship at this moment?

Trying again to get the Thursday evening summer Bible Study launched:

“Highlights of Luke/Acts” begins this Thursday, June 27

It has taken awhile, but after many false announcements we will begin our summer study of the Gospel of Luke

and Acts on Thursday June 27th, at 6:30 pm, in the Gathering Area at St. Michael Parish. This will be a

“highlights” approach … not reading every word but focusing on key moments that reveal how the Evangelist

Luke viewed Jesus and the life of the early Church. So, 6:30 pm, Thursday, June 27, St. Michael’s … finally!

Join a pilgrimage to Guatemala to participate in the Beatification Mass of Brother James Miller, a native of Central Wisconsin who was martyred in Guatemala in 1982. The pilgrimage will be December 4-9, 2019, departing from St. Bronislava Parish in Plover. In addition to the Beatification Mass, the pilgrimage will include Santiago Atitlan, where Blessed Stanley Rother of Oklahoma City was martyred in 1981; the ancient city of Antigua; and the Mayan village and mission of San Lucas Toliman. Mass will be celebrated daily. The pilgrimage includes hotel lodging and meals. It is being hosted by Father Tom Lindner, pastor of St. Anne Parish in Wausau, and Pilgrimages by Corporate Travel. Brochures are available at area parishes, or contact Fr. Lindner at [email protected]. An early booking discount is available for those who register prior to July 7. Register now to be part of this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

PRAYER TO SAINT MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL

St. Michael the Archangel,

defend us in battle. Be our defense

against the wickedness and snares of the Devil.

May God rebuke him,

we humbly pray, and do thou,

O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits,

who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.

Amen.
