Short-term Sunday School ClassThe Basics of Brueggemann

October 6 – November 3Old Testament Professor Walter Brueggemann is by many accounts one of the most influential biblical scholars of the past fifty years. Serving on the faculty of Columbia Theological Seminary for many years, Brueggemann has had a prolific career, publishing over one hundred books about issues related to scripture and how Christians are called to respond. Hendrix professor Robert (Bobby) Williamson will lead this four week class on the work of his former professor, examining some of the key ideas presented in Brueggemann’s major works. The class meets Sundays at 9:50 a.m. in Second Hall.

On October 27 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. there will be hot dogs, cotton candy, face paint, indoor and outdoor games, and more. There will also be Quiet Zone fun for anyone who enjoys a less stimulating environment along with allergy friendly treats. Hospital VisitationSecond Presbyterian cares. Visiting members in the hospital is an important way we extend God’s loving care. We are looking for more volunteers who can commit to hospital visits one or more days each month. These visits are so meaningful to our members who are hospitalized. Your schedule is flexible. On your designated day, you call the Care and Concern Line to see if anyone is admitted to your assigned hospital(s), and you visit at the time convenient to you. We provide training materials. If you can help, please contact Rebecca Cate, [email protected] or the church office.

Thank YouI value the ‘tie that binds’ our congregation and all the love within. Your prayers, positive thoughts, and concern were greatly appreciated by me as I recovered from my recent adventure while in the hospital and rehabilitating at Presbyterian Village. My lovely handmade cards signed by you were quite the topic of admiration as I had them on display. I was so proud to say that they were all from my friends at Second Presbyterian. Thank you,Amelia Walters

Blessing of the AnimalsOn October 6, members of Second Presbyterian Church and Grace Presbyterian Church came together to celebrate the beloved animals with whom we share our lives. Over twenty dogs and two brave cats were blessed along with a frog and several chickens in absentia. A fun time was had by all!

First & Third Monday MorningWomen’s Bible Study

If gratitude is good, why is it so hard to do? In her book Grateful, Diana Butler Bass invites readers to understand new dimensions of American spirituality. Although most of us know that gratitude is good—and good for us—there is a gap between our desire to be grateful and our ability to behave gratefully. Implications of the gap affect both our personal and public lives. Bass weaves together social science research, spiritual wisdom, and contemporary issues as she calls for a richer understanding and practice of gratitude. Join this eclectic group of women as we explore insights about the power of thankful living to change how we treat one another, and how we might transform our world. The Bible study meets 9:30-11:00 a.m. in Second Hall. Books will be available in the church office for $12.00.OCTOBER 7PrologueOCTOBER 21Part I Me: Emotions—Gifts and ThanksNOVEMBER 4Part II Me: Ethics—Awareness and Practice

Construction ReportConstruction of the new organ is in full production at the Nichols & Simpson office here in Little Rock. A new four-manual and pedal AGO console with a mahogany case and burl eucalyptus interior is being constructed. The manual natural keys are of polished bone and sharps are of rosewood. The drawknobs are made of rosewood with bone discs for engraving.

Second Presbyterian FellowshipOur fellowship is the sharing together in common life with others through relationship with God in Jesus Christ. It is first and foremost about relationships. Fellowship activities center on deepening relationships among ourselves and celebrating the common life we share. This common life draws us into shared worship, generosity, service, study, celebration and caring for one another. For example, our Prayer Shawl team enjoys an hour of monthly fellowship as they’re prayerfully knitting and crocheting gifts. They share stories, prayer concerns, joys and knitting techniques. Then, extending fellowship for persons in need, our pastors and other caregivers get to share the church’s prayers in the form of a prayer shawl. In the same way, pastors and elders extend communion from the Lord’s table we share in Sunday worship to the homes of those who could not join us. These are just a few of many ways we encourage meaningful Christian fellowship across this family of faith.Of course, fellowship-centered events draw us together throughout the year. Our Church Picnic brought together all ages at Ferncliff as we shared a meal, rocked on the porch telling stories, fished for the ugliest or biggest find, competed in lawn games, toured the facility by cart, canoed and enjoyed one another. May God continue to bless and nurture the common life we share in Jesus Christ.

Rock the BlockIt was a beautiful day in the neighborhood at our school partner Bale Elementary School! On Saturday, October 12, twenty members of our church worked alongside neighbors at Habitat for Humanity’s Rock the Block event. We painted, did yard work, and helped cook lunch for volunteers and friends who lived near the school!
