Woodford County Friends of Refugees (WCFOR)
When a new refugee family arrives in the United States, they have spent much time waiting in a third country while being vetted by UN agencies and the US government, passing through 20 layers of screening. Families who come to our area may be Syrian or Congolese, Butanese or Iraqi, or from some other place they have fled because of violence.
Several churches in Woodford County, from at least four denominations, have formed WCFOR to work with Kentucky Refugee Ministries in Lexington.
Because of the current national situation regarding refugees, KRM will be receiving very few refugees in 2017. For that reason, WCFOR is now working with refugees who have been in Central Kentucky for a few months, assisting with specific financial, transportation, and social issues as these folks make a new life for themselves. The refugees that WCFOR will be working with do not have sponsors to assist them with the transition to the U.S., so their challenges sometimes seem overwhelming.
In the weeks and months ahead, we will be learning more about how we can assist the individuals who are here in a variety of ways. Stay tuned!

Stewardship Sunday - May 21st
Together, we give to financially support the ministries and programs that help build up the Kingdom of God in our community and in our world. How much money is spent? How is it spent?
The narrative of who we are as a church unfolds in Scripture, in the life of Jesus, and in the world. We live out this story in many ways, including through the seven Christian Practices of: Worship, Education, Love, Community, Open Table, Mission, Evangelism
These practices give us sacred containers within which we can place our financial resources so that this congregation will be able to offer ministry and programming as we continue to live out God’s transforming love in so many faith-filled ways.
The Admin Team is asking everyone to prayerfully consider how we will respond with our pledge cards to our mission and story of WELCOME on Stewardship Sunday, May 21, 2017, as we estimate our giving for the coming year.
From Midway University (Ruth Slack Roach Scholarship Fund) “Thank you for your generous gift of $200 to Midway University. It is truly and exciting time to be a part of Midway. With the largest incoming freshman class in the history of this school, we are pleased to be providing educational opportunities for both men and women who wish to continue their education through undergraduate and graduate programs. This year marks the 170th anniversary of our University, steeped in history and rich tradition and educational excellence. We are encouraged in knowing that friends like you stand with us.” From Artye DuLaney (Lenten Breakfast Speaker) “My thanks and appreciation for your hospitality and love shown me during my visit there on April 1st. Your attentive ears were appreciated as I presented poems from Journeys of the Heart. Thanks to those who bought a copy. I was very humbled to sign and autograph and converse with you about my family and yours. It is my hope that many can attend the Arthur M. Walters 4th Annual Benefit Concert in October (more info forthcoming) at Bellarmine University where a scholarship is named after my father. And thank you for the love offering. It was not expected. Love and blessings.” From Transylvania University “On behalf of Transylvania University, please accept our appreciation of your recent gift benefiting the Church Annual Fund. We recognize that corporate and foundation gifts reflect an abiding faith in Transyl-vania’s mission. Our institution strives to prepare our students for life beyond campus, and to instill an interest in service - wherever our graduates go in life. In the classroom, our students learn to communicate, analyze, and synthesize knowledge, which we believe will enhance their ability to emerge as stellar employ-ees and citizens. We are grateful for the support you have offered to our campus, and for the impact it will undoubtedly have on students, faculty, and the community at large.” From Lexington Theological Seminary “The Lexington Seminary community is blessed by your generosity and kindness. We thank you for valuing the work of the Seminary and joining with us in preparing men and women for service in Christ’s church. When students reflect upon their opportunity to attend LTS, words can’t describe how enthusiastic and appreciative they are to be in the Seminary’s Master of Divinity program. If they could speak to you face-to-face, they would thank you for helping make their seminary education possible. So, on their behalf, thanks for your partnership and good gift of $200.”

Community News & Notes
It is that time again to nominate elders, deacons, and church leaders for Midway Christian Church.
The positions of elders, deacons, and church officers are very important roles of
leadership in our church, so if you have any suggestions or ideas for who would be
good in these positions, please see Susan Shelton (Shirley is laid up for a little while)!
Thank You from Pat Wilson
“A Special Note of Thanks: ‘A special act
of kindness has a beauty all its own.’
You, the church family of MCC, have the
most beautiful faces I have ever seen. Every
thought and prayer sent to heaven on my behalf recently
is greatly appreciated and needed. Also the pacemaker
is greatly appreciated. So thank you for the cards, too.
A special thanks to Heather who helped my family and
me through all that happened. She is special to all of
us...... Pat Wilson”

Walk in Nature for Mental Health
A study, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, found that people who walked for 90 minutes in a natural area, as opposed to participants who walked in a high-traffic urban setting, showed decreased activity in a region of the brain associated with a key factor in depression. More than half of the world's population lives in urban settings, and that is forecast to rise to 70 percent within a few decades. Just as urbanization and disconnection from nature have grown dramatically, so have mental disorders such as depression. In fact, city dwellers have a 20 percent higher risk of anxiety disorders and a 40 percent higher risk of mood disorders as compared to people in rural areas. People born and raised in cities are twice as likely to develop schizophrenia. The researchers found little difference in physiological conditions, but marked changes in the brain. Neural activity in the subgenual prefrontal cortex, a brain region active during rumination - repeti-tive thought focused on negative emotions - decreased among participants who walked in nature versus those who walked in an urban environment. It is essential for urban planners and other policymakers to understand the relationship between exposure to nature and mental health, the study's authors write.
