DEACON OF THE MONTH
Derick McKinney
July – December 2015 Emphasis
discipleship - dəsīpə l-ship (noun) – the process by which disciples grow in
the Lord Jesus Christ and are equipped by the Holy Spirit in order to fulfill the great commission and make disciples.
Discipleship is a very complex yet simple concept.
Discipleship is anything that is done in order to grow or
help others grow in faith in Christ. During this second six
months of our Vision Fulfillment Strategy we will encour-
age others to GROW in the knowledge and wisdom of
Christ, to GROW in our own relationship with Christ, and
to GROW in our relationships with one another. We will
focus on growing in the likeness of the Savior in whom we
profess to be followers. We will accomplish this by: spend-
ing more time with Him, learning more about Him, and
sharing His gospel in our daily lives. (Simply put, Disciple-
ship.)

WMU Speaks...
ALL FOR YOU Surrender * Sacrifice * Serve
Just returned from Bryson City where we ministered alongside
missionary Tom Harris and a S.W.A.R.M. (South West Area
Resort Ministry) Team. We planned and implemented
Backyard Bible Clubs at various RV Campgrounds in the area,
visited churches and nursing homes. We had singing, sharing
of God’s Word and prayed with individuals for their personal
requests. Witnessed a 101 year old man share that he now has
Jesus in his heart. This experience was a couple of weeks
before we arrived. However, it confirms that a continual
watering of spiritual seeds planted will reap the harvest. Praise
God...there is always hope. Children were blessed as well as
their parents. We shared diapers and wipes with the Crisis
Pregnancy Center as well as baby clothes for the babies. We
have made new friends and enjoyed working with five other
churches from North Carolina on the MissionsCAROLINA
team. The S.W.A.R.M. teams come from South Carolina,
Georgia, Mississippi and Tennessee. Some of them traveled
with “Campers for Christ.” they do puppet shows, singing,
preaching and witnessing. We had a father/son team with us
who presented a modern day Prodigal Son drama. Everything
was good and next year Missions CAROLINA 2016 may be in
our area...north-central Piedmont. Would you consider serving?
In Christ!

As I sit here writing this month’s article for the Beacon and
the blog, I’m doing something I haven’t done in quite a while; I’m
sitting in a college dorm room. This particular dorm room happens
to be on the campus of Anderson University in Anderson, South
Carolina. I am here with our Youth Directors, Derick and Marcie,
and part of our youth group. So far this week I have seen Derick
and Marcie both teach, lead, and minister to our youth in one on
one basis and as a group. It’s times like this I am reminded of the
blessing we have in these two choice servants of God. This year, they are heading into their 16th year
of youth ministry at First Baptist. During that time I know there have been ups and downs. I’m sure
there have been changes, disappointments, and triumphs. Through all of that they have been the
constant; but ministry changes. People move, and students graduate; ministry is constantly changing.
Right now at First Baptist, we as a church, are in a season of change. Meris and I are celebrating our
first full year in August. Others are celebrating 25 years of service and still others are very new to the
church. Churches change, ministry changes, but the gospel doesn’t change.
In the upcoming months we are taking a hard look at
discipleship and the discipleship process at First Baptist. This
means more changes. Rather than trying to slip these changes
in unnoticed, as a staff member and as pastor, I want to tell
you about these changes, I want you to know about them be-
fore they happen. I want you to be informed and get on board as we move forward in the direction
God is calling us. This direction is the direction the gospel calls us to go; we are to make disciples!
Right now as I write this the youth are doing all sorts of activities. A state away, we have
members of our WMU who are serving Bryson City, NC. They are being the hands and feet of Jesus.
Closer to home at the building where the church meets, we have faithful saints who are gathered for
worship and midweek study. This is what the church is doing right now. We are the church, this
week we are the church scattered, next Sunday we will be the church gathered. No matter where we
are we are the church, we are disciples of Jesus Christ. This will never change, this is our identity.
So in the upcoming months as we study discipleship
and as we make some changes to promote discipleship and
growth, would you pray for us? Would you pray for us as
a church? Would you pray for us as staff members? Would
you pray for us as individuals? Our desire is to see people
GROW in the Name of Jesus; and you are a vital part of
that goal. We can’t do it without you and we don’t want to.
Thank you for being the hands and feet of Christ daily.
- Pastor Jonathan
