Welcome to Knowing God through the Gospel of Luke.

During these six weeks, our goal is to get up close and personal

with the story of Jesus life in order to better understand Jesus

actions and teachings. We want you to not simply learn about

the story of Jesus life, but to live inside of it in such a way that

you are able to understand your own story better.

As you read through the weekly Bible readings, the reflection

questions are meant to get you closer to the people in each

passage. How were they feeling? What were their experiences

and motivations? How were they affected by Jesus? Begin

asking where you might find yourself in each passage, and

consider anew how Jesus responses and actions could affect

    your life today.

This workbook is formatted each week with the following: Room for sermon notes Designated Bible reading, reflection questions and room

for you to respond for 5 of the 7 days between sermons

A designated Bible passage for you to study in your

small group and room for you to respond/journal about

your small group study and discussion time

The sermons, Bible readings and small group study passages

have been designed to work together to guide you towards our

overall goal of knowing God more in depth and personally. We

encourage you to embrace this opportunity wholeheartedly.

    Sincerely,

Rissa Eggleston (YFC Director of Learning Communities) and

25 Then Jesus said to them, You foolish people! You find it so hardto believe all that the prophets wrote in the Scriptures. 26 Wasnt it

clearly predicted that the Messiah would have to suffer all these

things before entering his glory? 27 Then Jesus took them through

the writings of Moses and all the prophets, explaining from all the

    Scriptures the things concerning himself.

28 By this time they were nearing Emmaus and the end of theirjourney. Jesus acted as if he were going on, 29 but they begged him,

Stay the night with us, since it is getting late. So he went home with

them. 30 As they sat down to eat, he took the bread and blessed it.

Then he broke it and gave it to them. 31 Suddenly, their eyes were

opened, and they recognized him. And at that moment he

    disappeared!

32 They said to each other, Didnt our hearts burn within us as hetalked with us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us? 33 And

within the hour they were on their way back to Jerusalem. There they

found the eleven disciples and the others who had gathered with

them, 34 who said, The Lord has really risen! He appeared to Peter.

Luke 24:13-34 New Living Translation (NLT)

The Walk to Emmaus13 That same day two of Jesus followers were walking to the villageof Emmaus, seven miles from Jerusalem. 14 As they walked along

they were talking about everything that had happened. 15 As they

talked and discussed these things, Jesus himself suddenly came and

began walking with them. 16 But God kept them from recognizing

    him.

17 He asked them, What are you discussing so intently as you walkalong?

They stopped short, sadness written across their faces. 18 Thenone of them, Cleopas, replied, You must be the only person in

Jerusalem who hasnt heard about all the things that have happened

    there the last few days.

19 What things? Jesus asked. The things that happened to Jesus, the man from Nazareth, theysaid. He was a prophet who did powerful miracles, and he was a

mighty teacher in the eyes of God and all the people. 20 But our

leading priests and other religious leaders handed him over to be

condemned to death, and they crucified him. 21 We had hoped he

was the Messiah who had come to rescue Israel. This all happened

    three days ago.

22 Then some women from our group of his followers were at histomb early this morning, and they came back with an amazing

report. 23 They said his body was missing, and they had seen angels

who told them Jesus is alive! 24 Some of our men ran out to see, and

sure enough, his body was gone, just as the women had said.

Day 3: Luke 2:21-52 Believing the promise that he would not die before seeing theLords Christ, how must Simeon have felt when this promisecame true?

It says that Mary treasured all these things in her heart. Whatexactly was she treasuring? How was this of help to her later inJesus life?

Day 4: Luke 3:1-38What kinds of things did John do to prepare the way for theLord? In what ways can we be preparing the way for the arrivalof the Lord in other peoples lives?

How do you think Gods words at Jesus baptism helped Himknow who He was before His active ministry began? How canGods words to us help us know who we are in Him?

Day 5: Luke 4:1-44 Jesus was focused and clear about why He was sent: to

preach the good news of the Kingdom of God. How do yousee that clarity helping Him when He was tempted by Satan? When rejected at Nazareth? When driving out an evil spirit andhealing people?

How would our lives be different if we were as focused andclear about our lifes purpose/calling? What can you do toaccess that kind of clarity?

Have you ever experienced Jesus looking at you, or into yourlife, in the same way Peter did? What came from thatexperience?

Day 4: Luke 23:26-56 What do you think Jesus was thinking and feeling when He said:

Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do? (verse34) In what ways did they know and not know what theywere doing?

Have you been hurt or betrayed by people who either knew ordidnt know what they were doing? What is Jesus heart for

    them? For you?

Day 5: Luke 24:1-53 Why were the eyes of the two travelers kept from recognizing

Jesus on the road to Emmaus? (verse 16) What resulted fromJesus identity not being revealed right away?

Have you ever experienced your eyes being kept from seeingin a certain situation? Is there a way God might have used thattemporary blindness to bring glory to Himself in your life? How?

Luke 4:1-13 New Living Translation (NLT)

    The Temptation of Jesus

1 Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan River. He was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, 2 where he was tempted

by the devil for forty days. Jesus ate nothing all that time and

became very hungry. 3 Then the devil said to him, If you are the Son of God, tell thisstone to become a loaf of bread.

4 But Jesus told him, No! The Scriptures say, People do not live bybread alone.

5 Then the devil took him up and revealed to him all the kingdoms ofthe world in a moment of time. 6 I will give you the glory of these

kingdoms and authority over them, the devil said, because they are

mine to give to anyone I please. 7 I will give it all to you if you will

    worship me.

8 Jesus replied, The Scriptures say, You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him. 9 Then the devil took him to Jerusalem, to the highest point of theTemple, and said, If you are the Son of God, jump off!

    10

    For theScriptures say,

He will order his angels to protect and guard you.11 And they will hold you up with their hands so you wont even hurt your foot on a stone. 12 Jesus responded, The Scriptures also say, You must not test theLord your God.

13 When the devil had finished tempting Jesus, he left him until thenext opportunity came.

be weighed down? (verse 34) What kinds of things weigh yourheart down?

What does He mean by staying awake at all times? (verse 36)What could this instruction mean to each of us, personally?

Day 2: Luke 22:1-38 Why did Jesus establish the Lords Supper? (verses 17-20)

Why do we need to remember Jesus? How does rememberingJesus in our everyday lives help us?

    Jesus and Zacchaeus

Jesus entered Jericho and made his way through the town. 2 Therewas a man there named Zacchaeus. He was the chief tax collector in

the region, and he had become very rich. 3 He tried to get a look at

Jesus, but he was too short to see over the crowd. 4 So he ran ahead

and climbed a sycamore-fig tree beside the road, for Jesus was

    going to pass that way.

5 When Jesus came by, he looked up at Zacchaeus and called him byname. Zacchaeus! he said. Quick, come down! I must be a guest in

    your home today.

6 Zacchaeus quickly climbed down and took Jesus to his house ingreat excitement and joy. 7 But the people were displeased. He has

gone to be the guest of a notorious sinner, they grumbled.

8 Meanwhile, Zacchaeus stood before the Lord and said, I will givehalf my wealth to the poor, Lord, and if I have cheated people on

their taxes, I will give them back four times as much!

9 Jesus responded, Salvation has come to this home today, for thisman has shown himself to be a true son of Abraham. 10 For the Son

of Man came to seek and save those who are lost.

Luke 18:18-27 New Living Translation (NLT)

    The Rich Man

18 Once a religious leader asked Jesus this question: Good Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?

19 Why do you call me good? Jesus asked him. Only God is trulygood. 20 But to answer your question, you know the

commandments: You must not commit adultery. You must not

murder. You must not steal. You must not testify falsely. Honor your

    father and mother.

21 The man replied, Ive obeyed all these commandments since Iwas young.

22 When Jesus heard his answer, he said, There is still one thing youhavent done. Sell all your possessions and give the money to the

poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.

23 But when the man heard this he became very sad, for he was veryrich.

24 When Jesus saw this, he said, How hard it is for the rich to enterthe Kingdom of God! 25 In fact, it is easier for a camel to go through

the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom ofGod!

26 Those who heard this said, Then who in the world can be saved?27 He replied, What is impossible for people is possible with God.

In verse 39, is there a home you could return to and tell howmuch God has done for you? What would that look like?

How do you think it felt to experience a long-term illness forwhich there seemed to be no healing? (verse 33) Have youever reached out to Jesus in desperation and experienced Hispower? How did it change you?

What can we learn from His response, as we choose our own

    responses?

Day 5: Luke 20:9-47 What was the motivation of the scribes and chief priests

when they questioned Jesus? (verses 19-26) Why did Jesus

response cause them to marvel and become silent?

39 When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said tohimself, If this man were a prophet, he would know what kind of

woman is touching him. Shes a sinner!

40 Then Jesus answered his thoughts. Simon, he said to thePharisee, I have something to say to you.

Go ahead, Teacher, Simon replied. 41 Then Jesus told him this story: A man loaned money to twopeople500 pieces of silver to one and 50 pieces to the other. 42 But

neither of them could repay him, so he kindly forgave them both,

Luke 10:25-42 New Living Translation (NLT)

    The Most Important Commandment

25 One day an expert in religious law stood up to test Jesus byasking him this question: Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal

    life?

26 Jesus replied, What does the law of Moses say? How do you readit?

27 The man answered, You must love the Lord your God with allyour heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind. And,

    Love your neighbor as yourself.

28 Right! Jesus told him. Do this and you will live! 29 The man wanted to justify his actions, so he asked Jesus, Andwho is my neighbor?

    Parable of the Good Samaritan

30 Jesus replied with a story: A Jewish man was traveling on a tripfrom Jerusalem to Jericho, and he was attacked by bandits. They

stripped him of his clothes, beat him up, and left him half dead

    beside the road.

31 By chance a priest came along. But when he saw the man lyingthere, he crossed to the other side of the road and passed him by. 32

A Temple assistant walked over and looked at him lying there, but he

    Parable of the Lost Son

11 To illustrate the point further, Jesus told them this story: A man

had two sons. 12 The younger son told his father, I want my share ofyour estate now before you die. So his father agreed to divide his

    wealth between his sons.

13 A few days later this younger son packed all his belongings andmoved to a distant land, and there he wasted all his money in wild

living. 14 About the time his money ran out, a great famine swept

over the land, and he began to starve. 15 He persuaded a local

farmer to hire him, and the man sent him into his fields to feed thepigs. 16 The young man became so hungry that even the pods he

was feeding the pigs looked good to him. But no one gave him

    anything.

17 When he finally came to his senses, he said to himself, At homeeven the hired servants have food enough to spare, and here I am

dying of hunger! 18 I will go home to my father and say, Father, I

have sinned against both heaven and you, 19 and I am no longer

worthy of being called your son. Please take me on as a hired

    servant.

20 So he returned home to his father. And while he was still a longway off, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion,

he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him. 21 His son said to

he put the man on his own donkey and took him to an inn, where he

took care of him. 35 The next day he handed the innkeeper two silver

coins, telling him, Take care of this man. If his bill runs higher than

this, Ill pay you the next time Im here.

36 Now which of these three would you say was a neighbor to theman who was attacked by bandits? Jesus asked.

37 The man replied, The one who showed him mercy. Then Jesus said, Yes, now go and do the same.Jesus Visits Martha and Mary

38 As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a certain village where a woman named Martha

welcomed him into her home. 39 Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lords

feet, listening to what he taught. 40 But Martha was distracted by the

big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, Lord,

doesnt it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do

all the work? Tell her to come and help me.

41 But the Lord said to her, My dear Martha, you are worried andupset over all these details! 42 There is only one thing worth being

concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken

    away from her.
