Come to Jesus
Iimagineyouhavefromtimetotimeexperiencedthem,perhapsinfrequentlyor
irregularly,butdefinitively.Come-to-Jesusmoments:thosetimeswhenweface
atruthwehavebeenavoiding,usuallyaboutourselves;thoseoccasionsthatchallengeustomakeachange.Perhapsonewastheresultofalittle“come-to-Jesustalk”withyourparentorbossorspouseorcolleague,theprincipalconse-quencesofwhichwere,first,thatthetruthwasexposed,andsecond,thatsomethinginyouneededtochange–yourperspective,yourbehavior,yourtune.
TheEpiphanystorydescribesaquiteliteralcome-to-JesusmomentfortheMagi.TheycametoJesusinthestableatBethlehemandpresentedhimwithgifts,makingawitnesstonewlife–thenewlifebeforetheminthehaymangerandthenewlifetheywouldsurelyfaceasaresultoftheircome-to-Jesusmoment.Inthatmomentmuchtruthwasexposed,particularlythetruthaboutGod’sincarnationandthetruthaboutHerod’smurderousintentions.Andinthatmomentsomethingchanged.Theysawthingsdiffer-ently.TheyrecognizedtheviolenceofHerodandthattheycouldnotandwouldnotletthemselvesbeco-optedbyit.Andso,theGospelreports,“theyleftfortheirowncountrybyanotherroad.”OrasJamesTaylorsingsinhissongthattakesitsnamefromthisline,“…theywenthomebyan-otherway.”Theychangeddirection,notonlyintheirtravelitinerary,butintheirlives.
Thereisnomentionofastartoleadthemhomeliketheonethatledthemtothestable,sowecannotassumethiswasaneasyadjustment.AndgiventhatHerodwasexpect-ingthemtopayhimareturnvisitanddeliverthegoodsonthisnew“king,”neithercanweassumetheirtripwasleisurelyorwithoutanxiety.TheMagi’scome-to-Jesusmo-mentcostthemalot.Wecanonlyimaginehowprofoundlyitchangedthem.
Inspiteofthepoweroftheseencounterswiththedivine,itisnotalwayseasytosurrendertothenewlifetheyoffer.Itisnotalwayseasywhenwebegintoseethingsdif-ferentlyandrealizewhatthatnewperspectivemightcostus.Suchchangeisdifficult;givingupthefamiliarishardwork.Goinghomebyanotherwayisnosmallchallenge.Inaveryrealsensetherearenosuchthingsaslittleepiphanies;thesecome-to-Jesusmomentsrockourworlds.
ThereisaparticulargraceintheliturgicalcalendarthatEpiphanyisfollowedbyLent.Thegreatcome-to-Jesus
momentwesharewiththeMagiismetwiththeconcreteopportunitytotravelwithHimbacktoGod,homebyanotherroad.TheLentenroadtotheCrossandResurrec-tionisajourneybacktoGodbyanewanddifferentway.Itdemandsofusanincreaseinself-awareness,self-surrender,andself-sacrifice.Insodoing,itmodelsforustheresponsetoallofourcome-to-Jesusmoments,thosegreatandsmall,dramaticandsubtle,ofclangingsymbolsandstill,smallvoices.Anditmodelsaswellforusthelife-longdisciplineofcomingtoJesus,owninghistruthaboutus,surrender-ingtothenewlifeheoffers,andjourneyinghometoGod.That,afterall,istheultimatepurposeandendtothisearthlypilgrimage.
Thispastyear,tragically,wehavewitnessedanumberofeventsthathaveresultedincome-to-Jesusexperiences.PerhapsnonehasbeensostarkanddifficulttobearastheelementaryschoolshootinginNewtown,Connecticut.Thathorrifyingeventexposedagainthetragictruthaboutourcapacityforviolenceasindividualsandasanation.AndifwemetJesusanywhereinthattragedy,alongsidethecom-fortofhishealingpresencewassurelythechallengetogohomebyanotherroad.Whateveristhatnewway,whetheritentailsincreasedmentalhealthservices,strictergunregistrationrequirements,greaterrestrictionsonthesizeofammunitionclipsandtheautomationoffiring,addressingviolenceinandasentertainment,orsomecombinationoftheseandotherchanges,wemustbewillingtotakeit,tochange,eventoletgoofsomethingswemayjustifiablyfeelentitledto,inorderthatwemightprotecttheinnocentsandsecurethecommongood.
EverytimewemeetJesus,herequiresustogiveuppartofourlivesthatwemightreceivenewlife,bothforourselvesandforothers.Itisacostlycharge,tobecertain,onethatnodoubtwillrequireofusgreaterself-awareness,deeperself-surrender,andmorecompleteself-sacrifice.MyprayeristhatthisLentmaybeforeachofusajourneywithJesusbacktoGod,homebyanotherway,thatresultsinthespiritualsacrificehemodeledwithhisowndeath,andwhichleadsalwaystonew,godly,andresurrectedlife.
LetuscometoJesus,andbythenewroadheoffers,togetherbecomemorefullythebodyofChrist.

Atthe2010DiocesanConvention,BishopHollingsworthchallenged
thediocesetoconsideraboldnewventure—onethatwouldnotonlyprovidespaceforspiritualgrowth,butwouldalsoallowforexperimentationwithmissionworkinjusticeministries.
Basedonhissabbaticalwork,inwhichhevisitedanumberofcampandretreatcentersaroundthecountry,BishopHollingsworthenvisionedaplacegeographicallyinthecenterofthediocesewhereongoingjusticeministriescouldflourishasanintegralpartoftheprogrammingfordiocesanyouthandadults;forinstance,feedingprograms,advocacyprojects,orenvironmentalwork.
Hedescribedaplaceforspiritualgrowthandfaithdevelopmentthatengagesthepracticalchallengesweareboundtofaceasasocietyandworld,andreflectstheChristianvaluesofjusticeandstewardshipofGod’screation.Hebelievesthatarenewedcampandretreatministrywouldmakeasubstantialcontributiontothefaithformationandspiritualdevelopmentoffuturegenerations.
“ItcouldbeashowcaseofgreentechnologyfornorthernOhioandadestinationforschoolfieldtrips,andsetastandardforenergysustainabilityinourchurchbuildingsandhomes,”hesaid.
WiththehelpofKatieOng-Landini,projectmanagerfortheCampandRetreatCenterandamemberofChristChurch,ShakerHeights,BishopHollingsworthisconsideringpropertyinWakemanTownship,Ohio,thatoffersacentrallocationinthediocese.On137acresoflandcircumscribedbytheVermillionRiver,itislocated18mileseastofNorwalkand12milessoutheastofOberlin.
ManyofyouspenttheafternoonatthesitelastsummerforaDiocesanpicnicwherewewelcomedthecyclistsattheendoftheBishop’sBikeRide,celebratedthe25thordinationanniversariesofBishopsWilliamsandBowmantotheepiscopate,andintroducedmembersofthediocesetotheproperty.Initspresentform,itincludesplaying
fields,pathsthroughwoodedareas,andal5-acrelakeforswimming.
Essentiallythecampandretreatcenterisenvisionedasamulti-partprogramthatwouldinvolve
• asummercampforchildrenandyouth,
• ayear-roundadultretreatcenter,
• anacademicyearprogramforchildren,youthandyoungadults,
• aworkingsustainablefarm,and• acurriculumthatwillfocus
onspiritualgrowth,socialjustice,andenvironmentalsustainabilityinbothenergyandfoodsystems.
SincelastConvention,focusgroupsandindividualsurveyswereconducted,designedtogaugeenthusiasmfortheproject.Astudy

teamfromCCS,astrategicconsultingandfundraisingfirm,conducted144privateinterviewsincluding75laypersonsand69clergymembers.Elevenstaffmemberswerealsointerviewedintwofocusgroups.Anonlinesurveygarnered125responses.Amongthequestionsaskedwere:
• Whatprogramswouldyouliketofocuson,e.g.,doesitinvolvechildrenoradults?
• Canweraiseenoughmoneytodevelopthisproject?
• Arethereotherprioritiesweshouldbeconsideringaswell?
Growing in FaithOfsignificantconcern
iswhetherthemodelwillhelpthediocesereachfuturegenerationsofpeopleandhelpthemgrowinfaith.Resultsofthestudyindicatedmostpeoplewanttofocusonchildrenandyouthministries.Inaddition,respondentsfeltthatcommunicantsneedmoreinformationandunderstandingofthepotentialopportunitiesandbenefitstotheirparishes.Thiswouldincludeunderstandinghowmission-basedministriesengageyouthinthechurchandenhancethevitalityofcongregations.Adetailedbusinessplan,includingself-sustaininglong-rangeconsiderations,isneeded,asisadesignplanthatoutlinesdevelopmentphasesoftheproject.
Sofar,threeworkinggroupshavedevelopedthemajorcomponentsofthisministry:aChildrenand
YouthProgram;anAdultRetreatProgram;andaSustainableFarm.Membersofthedioceseandadditionalprogrammingexpertsarerefiningandprioritizingtheworkthatneedstobedone.Usingthatinformation,aMasterPlanningCommitteewillworkwithourdesignteam—architectMattO’MaliaofGO
Logic,whosefocusison“passivehousing”constructionusingsuperenergyefficientdesigns,andlandscapearchitectAnnKearsley—torefinethemasterplanfortheproposedsite,whichwasfirstpresentedatlastNovember’sDiocesanConvention.
Atthe2011DiocesanConvention,BishopHollingsworthstated,“Boldactionsofthechurchdonothappenbecauseafewpeoplethinktheyareworthyofundertaking.Theyhappenwhenthewholebodygetsbehindthemandcommitstothem,whenthewholebodybeginstoshareacommonvisionandownership,whenthewholebodylivesintothemand
istransformedbythem.Ibelievethatthisisoneofthoseopportunitiesforboldactionthatcanvitalizethechurchandprovidecollectivelyformanycongregationswhattheystruggletoprovideontheirown.”
Betweennowandthe2013conventioninNovember,thegoalistobepreparedasadiocesetodecidewhetherwemoveforwardwiththisproject.

PreachingonEpiphanyatSt.Andrew’s,Barberton,theRev.GayClarkJenningstoldthecongregationthatthisyear,shewasstruckbythe
lastsentenceofMatthew’sEpiphanygospel:“AndhavingbeenwarnedinadreamnottoreturntoHerod,theyleftfortheirowncountrybyanotherroad.”
It’sanaptpassageofscriptureforJennings.Ayearago,shehadnoideashewouldbeontheroadsheisnowtraveling.Butduring2012,shebegantofeeltheretire-mentitchaftera30-yearcareerincludingpositionsinhospitalandparishministry,17yearsascanontotheor-dinaryintheDioceseofOhio,andnineyearsasassociatedirectorofCREDOInc.,anEpiscopalChurchwellnessprogram.
Then,inApril,EpiscopalChurchHouseofDepu-tiesPresidentBonnieAndersonsurprisedthechurchbyannouncingthatshewouldnotseekathirdterm.Afewweekslater,Jennings,aneight-timedeputyfromtheDioceseofOhio,decidedtostandforelectiontothefull-timevolunteerposition.OnJuly10,atthe77thGeneralConventioninIndianapolis,shewaselectedaspresidentoftheHouseofDeputiesonthefirstballot.Sheisthefirstordainedwomantoholdthepost.
TheHouseofDeputiesandtheHouseofBishopsmakeupGeneralConvention,thegoverningbodyofTheEpiscopalChurchthatmeetseverythreeyearstosettheEpiscopalChurch’smissionpriorities,budgetandpolicies.TheHouseofDeputieshasequalnumbersofclergyandlaydeputies,whoareelectedbythechurch’s110dioceses.InadditiontopresidingovertheHouseofDeputieswhenitisinsession,thePresidentoftheHouseofDeputiesservesasvice-chairoftheExecutiveCouncilandvicepresidentoftheDomesticandForeignMissionarySociety,theNewYorkcorporationbywhichthechurchconductsbusiness;appointsclergyandlaymemberstostandingcommitteesandcommissionsandotherchurch-widebodies;andservesasanambassadorandadvocateforworkthatcarriesouttheresolutionsofGeneralConvention.
Tackling Church StructureJenningstookofficeattheendofaGeneralConven-
tionatwhichthestructureofthechurchwasthehottopic,andaschairoftheHouseofDeputieslegislative
committeeonstructure,sheshepherdedthedevelopmentofaresolutionthatcalledforablue-ribbontaskforceonchurchstructure.ThelegislationpassedboththeHouseofDeputiesandHouseofBishopsunanimously.
WritingafewdayslaterintheWashingtonPost,Jen-ningssaid,“Wearereadytospendthenextthreeyearsflatteningourhierarchy,streamliningourgovernance,andcreatingabudgetthatwillkeepmoreresourcesinlocalcongregationsandcommunities.Asurgeofenthusi-asticMillennialandGenerationXleadersisacceleratingourshifttowardflexiblegrassrootsnetworksandawayfromacorporatemodelthatnolongerfitsourfocusonlocalmission.”
PuttingthissurgeofyoungleaderstoworkwasJen-nings’firstprioritywhenshereturnedfromGeneralConventiontoherhomeinSagamoreHills,wheresheliveswithherhusband,Albert,whoisrectorofSt.Timo-thy’s,Macedonia.
BecausethePresidentoftheHouseofDeputiesfillspositionsonstandingcommitteesandcommissions,shereceivesapplicationsfromEpiscopaliansacrossthecountry,andapplicationscamefloodingin—nearly750for142spots.Jenningssettowork.

Theresultistheyoungest,mostdiversegroupofnewEpiscopalChurchleadersinmemory.ThirtypercentofJennings’newappointeesareage40andunderandnearlyhalf—47%—areage50andunder.Twenty-eightpercentarepeopleofcolor,and66%ofthenewlyap-pointedleadersareservingonachurchbodyforthefirsttime.
Leadership Like the Kingdom of God“Theleadershipofthechurchneedstolookmore
likethekingdomofGodandlesslikeaparishdirectoryofthe1950s,”shesaidwhenmakingtheappointments.“Thisgroupofnewleaderswillhelpensurethatthechurch’srecentprogressindiversitycontinues.”
HernewappointeesfromtheDioceseofOhioincludeCanontotheOrdinaryAlanJamestotheJointStandingCommitteeonProgram,BudgetandFinance,BillJoseph,NewLife,Uniontown,totheStandingCom-missiononCommunicationsandInformationTechnol-ogy,JamesSimon,OurSaviour,Akron,totheStandingCommissiononConstitutionandCanons,andRebeccaWilson,OurSaviour,Akron,totheStandingCommis-siononAnglicanandInternationalPeacewithJusticeConcerns.TheRev.PatriciaHanen(NewLife,Union-town)servesasJennings’representativetotheStandingCommissiononHealth.
SupportfromtheDioceseofOhiohasbeenessentialtoJenningssincethemomentshewaselected.Uponlearningthenews,BishopsHollingsworthandWil-liamsaskedpermissiontobeexcusedfromtheHouseofBishops,whichwasinsessiondowntheconventioncenterhallwayfromtheHouseofDeputies,sothattheycouldgreetandcongratulateJenningsasshesteppedofftheflooroftheHouseofDeputiestogiveherfirstpressconference.
Whenitcametimetoorganizeherofficeandstaff,JenningsagainturnedtoDioceseofOhiocolleagues.BetseyBell,formerlyassistanttotherectoratSt.Paul’s,ClevelandHeights,isnowexecutiveassistanttothepresidentoftheHouseofDeputies.JosephcreatedandmanagesthenewHouseofDeputieswebsiteatwww.houseofdeputies.org,andWilsonisJennings’communi-cationsconsultant.
Inthemidstofmakingappointmentsandsettingupshopforthenextthreeyearsofbusiness,Jenningshastackledherworkbetweenconventionswithenergy.ShemakesregulartripstoTheEpiscopalChurchheadquartersat815SecondAvenueinNewYorkandtravelsregularlyacrossthechurchtomeetwithdeputiesandotherchurchleaders,speakandpreach,andrepresentthechurch.
Jennings’particularpolicyprioritiesaspresidentarefosteringyoungleadersinthechurchandadvocatingforvulnerablechildren.Thissummer,shewillleadapilgrim-agetoGhanasponsoredbyEpiscopalRelief&Devel-opment,thechurch’sinternationaldevelopmentarmthatsupportsprogramsthatreducemalariaandchildmalnutritioninGhanaandothercountriesintheGlobalSouth.“ThiswillbemyfirsttriptoGhanaand,tobeperfectlyhonest,it’sabitoutsidemycomfortzone,”shewrotetopeoplewhoareconsideringjoiningthepilgrim-age.“ButeventhoughI’vebeenhappilyoverwhelmedbyinvitationsandrequeststotravelonbehalfofthechurchinthefirstfewmonthsofmytenure,IleaptatthechancetoworkwithEpiscopalRelief&Development.”
Justafewmonthsintoherthree-yearterm,it’sclearthatJenningsisrelishinghernewroadhomeandtakingtoheartherEpiphanysermon.“Don’ttravelaloneifatallpossible,”sheadvisedtheBarbertoncongregation.“Listentoyourownheartandbeyourself,andbewillingtotakeadifferentroadiftheroadyouareonleadstonowhere.”Or,asLowellGrisham,aseniordeputyfromArkansaswhonominatedJenningsforherpost,saidinhisnomina-tionspeech,“SheisworkingtowardthekingdomofGodallthetime,andshewantsallofustheretogether.”

ThosewhoworkintheChurch,bothordainedandlay,knowthatwearegovernedbybothcanonicalandcivillaws.
TheCanonshavebeenadoptedbytheChurchtogovernitself.Civillawsarethelawsadoptedbythestatetogovernourbehaviorwithothers.Priestsandvestrymembersarefamiliar(orshouldbe)withthosecivillawsthatregulatetheactivitiesoftheChurch:employmentlaw,tax,zoning,etc.Butoneareaofthelawoftenoverlookedisthelawofcopyright.Thisoversightismoresurprisingwhenweconsiderthatmuchofwhatwedoasachurch,liturgicallyandinfurtheranceofourmission,in-volveslawsofcopyright.Thisincludesthesermonsthatwepreach,certainprayersthatweuse,hymnsthatwesing,andwebsitesthatwemaintain.
Copyrightisaformofintellectualpropertythatnotonlydescribesandprotectsrightsgiventothecreatorsofliteraryandartisticworks,butcontributestotheculturalandeconomicdevelopmentofnations.
IntheUnitedStates,theprotectionoftheserightsisgovernedbyfederal,notstate,law.IndeedtheserightswereconsideredsoimportantbytheframersoftheConstitution,thattheyembodiedcopyrightprotectioninArticleIoftheConstitutionandempoweredCongressto“promotetheProgressofScienceandusefulArts,bysecur-ingforlimitedTimestoAuthorsandInventorstheexclu-siveRighttotheirrespectiveWritingsandDiscoveries.”
Copyrightprotectionextendstoliteraryworkssuchasnovels,poems,plays,referenceworks,sermons,computer
programs,websitecontentandnewsletters.Itcoversmu-sicalworksincludinghymns,anthems,andchoralworksandtheaccompanyingtexts.Itprotectsdramaticworks,choreography,pictorial,graphicandsculpturalworks,photographsaswellasmotionpictures,soundrecord-ings,computerprogramsandevenarchitecturalworks.
What Isn’t ProtectedAsimportantasitistounderstandwhatcopyright
protects,itisequallyimportanttounderstandwhatitdoesnotprotect.Itisoftensimplystatedthatcopyrightprotectstheexpressionofanideabutnottheideaitself.Factsandideascannotbecopyrighted.However,thespecificexpressionofanideaortheorderingoffactsmaybeprotected.Forexample,aparticularsermonontheneedforforgivenessiscoveredbycopyrightbuttheideaofforgivenessisnot.Theparishdirectoryiscoveredbycopyrightbuttheindividualnamesandaddressesarenot.
Copyrightiscreatedthemomentthework(i.e.,thepainting,thesermon,thehymn,theanthem,theweb-site)becomes“fixedinatangiblemedium”bytheauthor.Inotherwords,fromthemomentthebrushisoffthecanvas,thepenoffthepaperorthe“save”buttonishit,thecopyrightiscreated.Registrationdoesnotcreateacopyright;norisacopyrightnotice“©”required.Forworkscreatedtoday,theprotectionsaffordedbythe

Anyonewhoviolatestheseexclusiverightswithoutspecificpermissionoftheauthororownerofthecopyrightcommitscopyrightinfringement.Forexample,ifyoureproduceapaintingorpictureonyourchurch’swebsite,andthatimageisprotectedbycopyright,youwillbeinfringingthecopyright.Or,ifyoudecidetoshowamovietoagroupofseniors,youmaybeinfringingthecopyright.

insertinghymnorchoruslyricsintochurchbulletins,compilingdevo-tionalbookletsorcopyingsoftwareinthechurchoffice.Thelegalpenaltiesforcopy-rightinfringementvarybutmaybesevereandincludestatutorydam-agesfrom$200to$150,000foreachinfringementandevencertaincrimi-
nalpenalties.Evenifnodamagesare
assessed,thecostoflitigationcanbesubstantialanddamagethechurch’sreputation.
Religious Organizations Not Exempt
Religiousorganizationsarenotexemptfromcopyrightlaws.InRobertStigwoodGroupLtd.etal.v.O’Reillyetal.,346F.Supp.376(D.Conn.1972)anorganizationofRomanCatholicpriests,performedamodifiedversionofthemusical“Je-susChristSuper-star”aspartofitsnonprofitmin-istry.Thepriestsperformed“Su-perstar”withoutobtainingalicenseeitherfromtheplaintiffsorfromtheAmericanSocietyofComposers,AuthorsandPublishers(ASCAP).
TheDistrictCourtfoundthattheseperformancesinfringedtheplaintiffs’copyrightsandissuedapreliminaryinjunctionenjoiningthedefendantsfrompresentinganyfutureperfor-mances.InE.L.Publ’ns,Ltd.V.CatholicBishopofChicago,754F.2d216(1985)theRomanCatholicBishopofChicagowasheldliableforinfringementfortheunauthorizedcopyinganduseofhymnals.
Purchasingcopyrightedmateri-alsgivesonetherighttousethepurchasedcopysubjecttotherightsofthecopyrightholder.Permission,oralicense,willstillberequiredtomakeanyuseofthematerialsthatwouldinfringetherightsoftheowner.So,thepurchaseofsheetmusicorhymnalsalonedoesnotauthorizethechurchtomakecopiesortransparenciesortoperformtheworksoutsideofareligiousservice.Ofcourse,notallmusiccontainedinthehymnalmaybecoveredbycopy-right.Certainmusic(andlyrics)maybeinthepublicdomain.Inaddition,musicmaybecopiedinanemer-gencysituationtoreplacepurchasedcopiesthatarenotavailableforan
imminentperfor-manceprovidedthechurchreplacesthecopieswithpurchasedcopies.
Similarly,com-putersoftwaremaybesubjecttobothpatentandcopy-rightprotection.Acopyrightedsoftwareprogramcannotbecopiedwithoutalicenseorpermissionfromthecopyrightowner.Installationofsoftwareresults
in“copying.”Forthisreason,clergyandstaffshouldreadallsoftwarelicenseagreementscarefullyasthe

TheCommissiononGlobalandDomesticMission(CGDM)welcomedDebbieDomingoandtheRev.LornaSampsonfromtheAnglicanDioceseofBelizeduringWinterConvocation.TheywerevisitingOhiofromJan30throughFeb7.Aformerhighschoolteacher,SampsoncurrentlyassistswiththemissionsofChristtheKingAnglicanChurchinDangriga,St.Jerome’sMissioninHopkins,St.Monica’sMissioninHopeCreek,andSt.Matthew’sMissioninPomona.DomingoservesastheGeneralManageroftheAnglicanSchoolsinBelize.TheypresentedattheCGDMworkshopatWinterConvocationandmetwithseveralgroupsinCleveland,ToledoandAkron.SampsonpreachedonSunday,February3,atAllSaints’,Toledo,atthe10amEucharist.

Beforethewinterof2011-2012,theCityMissionofFindlay,Ohio,wasanovernightshel-terforhomelessmen,women,andchildren.Like
otherhomelessshelters,themissionprovidesamealandaplacetosleep.Itservesthecriticalpurposeofoffer-ingwarmthandprotectionfromtheelements.Whatitcouldn’tdowasprovideaspacetogoduringtheday.Itdidn’thavetheresourcestoteachpeopletheskillstogetajob,norprovidethemwithaphonenumberoranemailaddresssothataprospectiveemployercouldcontactthem.Nordidithelpthemfindcleanclothestogotoajobinterview.Theresidentswererequiredtoleaveearlyinthemorning,notreturninguntillateafternoon.Most
sheltersliketheCityMissionarefilledtocapacityduringthewintermonths,andtheyspendtheirdayscleaningandgettingreadyforthenextgroupofpeopletoarrive.Evenso,theFindlayCityMissiondoesnothaveenoughbedsforallthepeoplewhoneedthem.
Becausehomelesspeoplewereaskedtoleaveat8inthemorning,theyhadbeenspendingtheirdaysinanywarmplacetheycouldfind–localchurches,thelibrary—anywherethatwouldn’tkickthemout.Withhomelesspeoplearrivingineverincreasingnumbersandsometimesaskingtousetheirphones,TrinityEpiscopalChurchandSt.Andrew’sUnitedMethodistChurchsoonrealizedtheywerefacingahugeunmetneed.

Developing a Pilot ProgramWiththatinmindseveralchurch-
esintheFindlayareaandothernonprofitgroupsmettodiscusshowtheycouldhelp.TheresultoftheirworkwasthedevelopmentofapilotprogramDayCenter,whichwouldprovidehomelessindividualsandfamilieswithlunch,awarmspace,phones,computersandhelpfromvolunteers.ItopeneditsdoorsinDe-cember2011foratrialrunofthreemonthsintwolocations.
TheDayCenterhassincebecomeanongoingoperationhousedsolelyattheCityMission.InadditiontorepresentativesoftheCityMission,itsadvisoryboardconsistsofmembersfromTrinityEpiscopalChurch;St.Andrew’sUnitedMethodistChurch;CentralChurchofChrist;FirstLutheranChurch;HopeHouse,along-termshelterforwomenandchildren;FocusonFriends;ADAMHS,whichprovidesmentalhealthservicesforthosewhoareaddictedtodrugsandalcohol;andtheUniversityofFindlay,which
hasdesignatedtheDayCenterasaclinicalsiteforundergraduateandgraduateOccupationalTherapystudentsfinishingtheirfieldwork.
Otherorganizations,includ-ingGraceEpiscopalChurchinSandusky,EpiscopalCommunityServices,theCommunityFounda-tioninHancockCounty,andothershavegivengrants,whichhasallowedtheDayCentertoconnectcomput-ers,servers,printersandcopiers,providedaflat-screenTVandmanybooks.Todate,theDayCenterhasservedover2,250meals.
AccordingtotheRev.ChristineSchutz,rectorofTrinity,“Theiragesrangefrombabiestothosewhoareseniorcitizens.Theirstoriesareallunique.Someoftheteenagershavebeenkickedoutoftheirhomesandhavenowhereelsetogo.Therearewholefamiliesatthemission.Iknowahomelessfamilywhobroughttheirnewbabyhomefromthehospitaltoahomelessshelter.Thesearepeoplelikeyouandme.Theyhavelostajobandcannolongerpayrent.WhilesomeofthepeoplewhocometotheCenterhavebeenhomelessforalongtime,othersarehomelessforthefirsttimeintheirlives.
Help Needed, Not Criticism
“Theyfeelfortu-natetohaveawarm,safeplacetobeatthemission.Thesefolksneedourhelp,notourcriticism,”Schutzcontinued.InadditiontoSchutz’sworkwiththeDayCenter,TrinityparishionersPaulandNancyO’SullivanhavetaughthealthclassesattheCenter.TheO’SullivanshavetestedvariousideasontheparishionersatTrinity.Thenifanideaseemstohavemerit,itmay
turnintoaprojectandbecomeaper-manentfeatureoftheDayCenter.PaulO’SullivanwasthetreasureroftheProjectGroupandserveswithSchutzontheAdvisoryBoard.
ClaraHarrodistheDayCentercoordinator,apositionshelandedaftervolunteeringatCityMissionandbeinginvolvedwithasuccessfulDayCenterinVirginia.Shetrainsthevolunteerswhohelpwithevery-thingfromresumebuildingandjobinterviewingskillstocontrollingchronicdiseases,suchasdiabetes,tobudgetingandhousingsearches.Volunteersalsoteachtheparticipantshowtousecomputers,howtocommunicatewithprospectiveemployers,howtoadvocateforthemselves,howtodress,andalltheskillsthatalong-termhomelesspersonmightneedtobecomeindependent.Spiritualguidanceisavailableforthosewhowouldlikeit.Abulletinboardlistsavailablejobs.
TheonlyrequirementforusingtheDayCenteristhatpeopledon’tusedrugsoralcohol.Iftheydo,theyareaskedtoleavetheprem-ises,encouragedtostopusing,andwelcomedbackwhentheyaresober.
Inaddition,unaccom-paniedminorsarenotpermittedattheCenter.
Ofcourse,therearebigchallengesaswell.Commu-nityadvocacyisanongoingneed,andvolunteersaresentouttohelpneigh-borsunderstandthe
DayCenter.ManypeopleinthecommunityhaveanegativeviewoftheCityMissionandanegativestereotypeofthosewhoarehomeless.

Ithoughtabouttheplazaat24thandMission,whereweweregoingtoholdourAshWednesdayservice.TheplazawassmackinthecenteroftheMissionandheldaspecialattractionforthemosthardcoreChristianzealots.I’dmoreorlessignoredthemforoveradecade.ThenaftermyownunexpectedconversiontothefaithIlistenedwithnewears,andfoundmyselfmortifiedbytheferocityoftheirmessage:Repent…sinner…Zion…everlastingfire..
Onthesoutheastcorneroftheplaza,aMacDonaldsdaubedwithgraffitisoldall-Americanindustrial“tacos”toMexicanfami-lies.UnderageHondurandopedealers,pimplyandpale,flankedtherestaurant’sdoors,watchingforbusinessandtakingordersontheircheapcellphones.LikethefrightenedMixtecmenpeddlingboxesofpesticide-ladenorangesonnearbysidestreets,alotoftheboyswererumoredtobeindenturedservants,workingoffdebtstothegangswho’dbroughtthemacrosstheborder.
TherewasagaggleofoldNicaraguanmentothenorthwest,parkedonmilkcratesonthesidewalk,arguingpointlesslyaboutexilepolitics.AmoreorlessCatholicreligious-goodsstore,itswindowscloggedwithrosariesandmedallionsanduglyplasterstatuesofGuadalupeandSt.Joseph,wasbehindthem.Openonlyintermittently,itsdingybackcounterheldcandlesandpowdersandabusiness-likepriestesswhopromisedluck,money,revenge,love,protectionfromtheevileye.
Thesouthwestsidenearthebusstopwasclaimedbyabandofaging,remarkablysexysalseroswhouseditastheirperfor-mancespaceandsocialclubonweekends,enticingevenatoughyoungbutchgirlwithbaggypantstopauseforaminutewhenthesinger,astockyPuertoRicanguy,lethistenorslideoverthestutterofclavesin“CuandoTeVea.”Thecongero,Julio,wouldhunchoverhisdrumsimpassively,butI’dseenhimlifthisheadandcalloutpraisetotheorixaswhenYorubachantsbrokefromdeepinsidethefamiliarrhythms,andancientspiritsseemedtohoveroverthesidewalk.
Oblivious,afewJehovah’sWitnessespositionedthemselvesacrossfromthemusicians:plainmiddle-agedwomeninglassesandlongskirts,silentlyholdingupcopiesoftheSpanish-lan-guageWatchtowerthatnobodyevertook.Nearby,wherethesubwayescalatorpouredoutcommuters,foodvendorsparkedtheircarts:mengrillinghotdogswithbacon,guyssellinghotearsofcorndrenchedinmayonnaiseandsaltycheese,womenwithcoolersfullofhomemadetamaleswrappedinbananaleaves,and

Thereallyseriousevangelicalswereclusteredonthenortheastsideoftheplaza,nexttotheguyshustlingbustransfers.Repent,burn,alleluia,amen,repent.Andthiswaswherewewereheaded:groundzeroforpropheciesshoutedoutthroughcrappylittleamps,accompaniedbytambou-rinesandclappingandtheoccasionalpsychoticpreacherhowlingabouthellsorelentlesslythatthetransitcopswouldfinallyhavetotellhimtogohome.
“OhmyGod,Sara,”Marthahadgroaned,thatfirstyearItoldherwhereIwasplanningtobeonAshWednesday.“Areyoureallygoingovertotheplazain,like,fullchurchdrag?”
“Yeah,”Isaid.“Well,youknow,justafewofus,justalittleservice.Sortof.Ashes.Imean,look,whatcanIsay,I’vegoneovertheedge.”
Itriedtosoundnonchalant,buteversincetheideaofcelebratingAshWednesdayinthestreethadseizedme,thelinebetweenrespectableEpiscopalchurchgoerandlunaticevangelisthadbeenrapidlyeroding.Ihadn’ttoldMarthawewereplanningtokneelonthesidewalkandpray.
Becausetherewasnoline,really.Therewasnoboundarybuttheverythinlayersofskinbetweenmythumbandastranger’sforehead,madeslipperywiththesharedtruthofourmortality.Andthoseashes,likeallblessings,weregoingtodirtyusbothup,unleashingapowerthatflowedbackandforth,creatingspaceforthegoodnewstospringupnewbetweenus.
ThoseofusincassocksonAshWednesday,thoseshoutingrepentanceatrushhourthroughtheiramps,werehardly“bringingchurchtothestreets.”IftheMissionmeantanything,itwasabouthowchurch––notthebuild-ings,notthetax-exemptlegalentities,butthecomplex,contradictory,earthy,passionateandmutuallyindwellingbodyofChrist––wasalreadylivingthere.
Peoplewereoutinthestreetsoftheholycity,theMission,encounteringGodandthesaintsandangelsandeachother––sometimesalotmoreintenselythanthey’d
bargainedfor.Theywereouttherepraying,sinning,repenting,beingbaptizedintothemuddyriveroflifethatGodisalwaysflowingthrough.Theywereliving,forreal,intheonechurchthattheSpiritisforeverstirringuptomakeallthingsnew...

NanMiller,whoidentifiedtheneedfortutorsatWatterson-Laketwodecadesago,isthespiritualengineoftheproject,accordingtoOwen.“Onepassionateper-soninvolvedothersandovertheyearstheparishsortofadoptedtheschool,”hesaid.
“ToworkasatutoristocomefacetofacewiththecrisisconditionsoftheClevelandPublicSchoolsystem.Itcanbeaverysoberingexperience,”acknowledgedOwen.Inabuildinghecharacterizedascramped,noisyanddeteriorating,dedicated,hard-workingteachersstruggletoinstillknowledgewhilemanagingstudents’behavioralproblems.
Threeyearsago,St.Peter’sparishionerElisabethVinsonassumedleadershipofthetutoringprogram.Asaretiredelementaryschoolprincipalwhospent17yearsteachingintheDaytoninner-cityschoolsystem,Vinsonisawareofthechallengesfacingtoday’syouth.
Theinteractionwiththesestudentsprovidesmorethananacademicbenefit.Havingatutoronthesameday,atthesametime,isarelationshipthechildrencometocounton.“Thesearetheirformativeyears,”cautionedVinson.“Thesekidsfeelalone,andwithfamilieswhohavenoexpectationsforthem,it’shardtomakeachildfeelsecureandhelpmovethemalongtheacademictrack.
“Someofthesechildrenrevealpersonalinformationthatisveryhardonthem.Youdon’tmakejudgments,you’rejustthereinthatmomenttogivesupporttothatparticularchild.”
KeepingalogoneverychildshetutorsallowsVinsontoshareherinsightswiththeothertutors,asherstudentsadvanceingradelevel.Workingsolelywith1stgraders,Vinsonsaidit’srewardingwhenstudentsshehasworkedwithleavethe8thgradeandstillrememberher.
Addressing Special Needs ForparishmemberJanisCarlson,workingwithspe-
cialeducationstudentsatWatterson-Lakeisanextensionofbothherprofessionalandpersonallives.For15years,Carlsonworkedwithspecialeducationpre-schoolagechildren.AsthemotherofadaughterwithDownsyn-drome,Carlsonknowsfirsthandthatparentalinvolve-mentiskeytoraisingspecialneedschildren.
Asanadvocateforspecialeducation,shedoesn’tbelieveteachersorparentsshouldsetlimitsonwhatchil-drencanachieve.Herowndaughter,now33yearsold,isatestamenttothatbelief.“She’sstilllearningandshereadsbecausewepushher,”Carlsonsaid.
Usingwordcards,Carlsonworkswithchildrentoincreasetheirrecognitionofprimer
wordsandimprovereadingskills.“Attheendoftheyear,wecountupthecardsthey’vecometoknowbysightandthey’rereallyexcitedtoseehowmanynewwordsthey’velearned,”shesaid.

Learning Through SharingTwoyearsagoparishioner
RichardWillitscameonboard.Taskedwithtutoringagroupofseventoninechildren,henotedthattheyhavegoodandbaddays,justlikeeveryoneelse.“Somedaysoneofthekidswillsaytheydon’twanttoreadtoday,”saidWillits.Buthealwaysmanagestogetthemonbackontrack.
Attimeshe’lldigressfromthereadingmaterialtoshareapersonalexperiencefromhisyouth.“Iftheireyeswiden,IknowI’vehitonsome-thing.”Atthosemoments,sharingstoriesbecomesanextensionofthelearningprocess,asthechildreninturnsharetheirownexperienceswiththegroup.
At84,Willitssaidtutoringisanopportunitytohelpsomeoneelseliveabetterlife.“Seeingtheresultsisthegreatestreward.IwishIhaddoneitsooner,”hesaid.
BrigittePronty,principalatWatterson-Lake,saidthetutoringprogramhelpsbuildself-esteemandself-confidenceinkids.“Itprovidesstabilityforthemandtheylookforwardtoseeingtheirtutoreveryweek.”
Theweeklyinteractiongoesbeyondbuildingliteracyandmathskills.Itinstillseachchildwithasensethatadultsareinterestedinthemandtheirwellbeing.Withmanyofthestudentscomingfromstressedsingleparentorfosterhomes,thisinterestisoftenlacking.
Withthedemandsofdailylife,educationseemstobefallingthroughsociety’scracks.Prontynotedthatparent-teacherconferencessufferfromlowattendance.“It’shardforparentstohaveavestedinterestinachild’slearningwhentheyaremoreworriedaboutrentandutilities.”
Addtoitparentswhohadanegativeexperiencewhentheywereinschoolandtheresultisalowexpectationfortheirownchildren’sacademicachievements.Prontyrecognizestheimportanceofengag-ingchildreninlearningatanearlyage,notingthatpeerpressurecanalsohaveanegativeinfluenceonchildren.
Books of Their OwnSixyearsago,whenparishadmin-
istratorLeslieHannanlearnedthatHalfPriceBooksdonatesgentlyusedbookstonon-profitorganizations,sheseizedtheopportunitytohelpWatterson-Lakestudents.ThroughthebenevolenceofHalfPriceBooks’literacyprogramandtheirannualbookdrive,Hannanhashelpedtransportdozensofcartonsfullofchildren’sbookstotheschool.
UponhearingthatWattersondidn’thaveaschoollibrarybeforere-ceivingthedonatedbooks,HalfPriceBookshassincechosentofeatureSt.Peter’seffortsintheir2013corporatecalendar.
Withoutaccesstoqualitybooks,promotingliteracybecomesagreaterchallenge.“Someofthesekidsneverownedanybooks,”saidHannan.Now,withthehelpofteachers,theyareselectingbookstotakehome.Placingbookstocalltheirownintothehandsofthesechildrengivesthemasenseofprideandmovesthemonestepfurthertobecomingsuccessfulreadersandlife-longlearners.
Despitethedifficultiesinthesechildren’slives,Owennotedthereare
momentsofhope.“Manyofthekidsclearlyyearntolearnandmanageto,inspiteofthehugeobstaclesfacingthem.Manyparentsareequallyde-terminedtomaketheschoolagoodplace,inspiteoftheirownstruggles,”hesaid.
“Oursocietyisallowingthegreatinstitutionofpubliceducationtowitheronthevine,andindoingsopotentiallydamaginggenerationaftergenerationofkidsbeforetheyevengetthechancetoshine.Butevenontheworstdaystherearekidswhoseeyesburnwiththelightofcurios-ity,teacherswhostilllovethesekidsandcommunityfolkswhowon’tletdespairbethefinalword,”headded.
Asashowofappreciationforthevolunteers’efforts,aswellasthestudents’achievements,Watterson-Lakestaffandteachershostayear-endpartyforthetutorsandstudents,completewithcupcakes,watermelonandpop.Tutorsalsobringeachoftheirstudentsabook,whichistheirstokeep.
Manyofthesevolunteertutorswillreturnthefollow-
ingyear.Forsome,autumnwillbringanewsetoffaces,whileotherswillfol-lowtheirstudentstothenextgradelevel.
WhenProntydescribestherela-tionshipbetweenthetutorandstudentasoneofgiveandtake,St.Peter’stu-torsmightsaytheygetmorethantheygive.Insharingtheirloveofreadingand
learningaswellaspersonallifeexperiences
witheachchild,theygainasenseofpurpose–theopportunitytohelpchildrendeveloptotheirgreatestpotential.

AtourMissionAreaECWmeetingswegoaroundthetabletolearnoftheactivities
ofthevariouschurchesrepresented.AnneSmithandChristineLaneofSt.Timothy’s,Massillon,toldusaboutanewprojecttheywereundertakingwhichwasmakingsmall(5”to9”tall)“ComfortDolls”.
Someyearsago,aCanadianveteranofaUNPeacekeepingMissionwasintheCongowithhiswife(anurse)tovisitthegravesofCanadianpersonnelwhohadbeenkilledwhileservingaspeacekeepers.Duringtheirvisit,theysawfirsthandthechildrenwhoweresufferingfromstarvationanddiseasewithmanyofthemalsosufferingfromHIV/AIDS,conditionswhichhad,inmanycases,orphanedtheminthefirstplace.ItwasfromthisexperiencethattheorganizationICROSS(InternationalCommunityfortheReliefofStarvationandSuffering)cameintobeing.
Formanyyearstheyhavecollectedandshippedmedicalsuppliestotheworld’spoorestcountries.Becausemanyofthesesuppliesarefragiletesttubes,vials,instrumentsetc.,packingmaterialwasneededtoprotectthelifesavingvaccinesandothermeansoftreatmentfillingthecontainers.Fouryearsago,adecisionwasmadetoreplacethepackingmaterialwiththecomfortdolls–protectionforthepreciouscargoandajoyforthechildwhowouldbehelpedbyitssafearrival.
Thedollsaregiventothemanychildrenwholivetheirlivesinpovertyandillness.Formanyit’stheonlytoytheywilleverhave,andbesidesthejoyitbrings,itoftenservesastheirpillowinlifeandtheireverlastingcompanionindeath.
AtSt.Timothy’s,theprojectisn’texclusivelyfortheECW;anyonewhowantstocanknitorcrochetadoll.Theyprovidetheirownyarn,gettheinstructionsonlinefromhttp://icross-canada.comandmakethedollsintheirsparetime.Whiletherearepatterns,youareencouragedtouseyourcreativitywhenembellishingthemasyouwillseefromthepictureIrecentlyreceivedfromChristine.Whenthey
