Regina Carter comes from a long line of creative women starting with her Great Grandmother who couldn't wait for the Chicken Feed Sacks to arrive with new colors and designs just waiting to be made into a beautiful quilt that would be hand quilted by her and a group of friends known as "The Ladies."

For those that didn't attend October's meeting, Jean Leslie graciously donated $80 to the Eagle Ranch Committee.  Jean has a friend who donated some fabric and Jean noticed there was some beautiful batiks inside.  Jean took on the added task to sell the fabric and then donate the proceeds.  Such a wonderful surprise that couldn't be more needed.  Her donation will help us continue to make our quilt kits bright and more teenager/young adult friendly.

Just a reminder - please read over your quilt kit patterns - make sure you understand any possible changes we may have made to the pattern - keep your quilts as close to 60" x 72" as possible.

Happy Birthday to all of our Turkey Month Celebrants!  Please bring your birthday raffle 'gift' to the November 6th meeting. The Birthday Raffle is our one monthly fund raiser for the guild and your contributions help tremendously.  Also, don't forget to bring a few dollars to use to BUY raffle tickets - you can definitely WIN on your own birthday month (and every month)!  If you are unable to bring your item to raffle off in November, do bring it another month - this way everyone shares in the fun and spreads the goodies out over the months with just a few birthdays.

Thanks for your support of our guild!

There are still a few openings left for the February retreat, if you’ve never been now is the time. We have motel like rooms, all meals provided, games, prizes, and lots of time to work on the projects of your choice. The dates are February 13-16, 2018 and the cost is only $170. If you’ve already signed up the balance of your fee is due at the November meeting. I may not be at the meeting, I have a new knee coming on October 23. Donna will not be at the meeting either, she is moving but will be back for the retreat.

Sally Zook will collect the money for me. If you have any question text or e-mail me. Hope to see some new faces join in the fun.

This is a photo of the delivery of doggie and kitty beds to Northeast Georgia Humane Society. The staff and animals are very appreciative of all the beds we bring to them. Thank you Jenny Grandfield for the donation of fabric for covers, and to Donna Proctor for carting all the fabric around for me. A huge thank you to Sally Zook who helped me turn all that material into 122 covers. I won't be collecting beds at our November meeting, please save them for December. Again thanks to all who help our animals in need.

Chris Anderson

Carol Johnson would like to thank those ladies that helped clean up after project day.

A special extra thank you to Sandy and Karen.

Using the Color Wheel in Your Quilts by Becky Jorgensen

Using color wheel or just plain color in my quilts has always stumped me. I get all caught up sometimes of -does this look good? I am not comfortable with those colors…..sweaty palms when I step out of my comfort color zone. {do you have one of those moments?} It really isn’t that difficult though.  There are some awesome color combinations that we really should look at.  They can take your quilt to -yeah. that’s nice, to Whoa! take a picture of that one!

I think the most popular color combination that I know of is the green and red combo.  That is used A TON during the holidays- but really they work together beautifully because they are complimentary colors.  Opposites do attract!

Besides that– I am kind of a loss at what to do with color! For the most part it is kind of what we are attracted to.  There are a few things that we can follow though to have a better understanding on why some quilts look soooo much better than others. Let’s explore a little bit more shall we?

Color Wheel– I know you’ve seen them.  The kids even make them in school in art class!   They are great to have around for quick reference on what color combinations work well.  Or if you get stuck with one color and not really sure what to add to it to help it shine.  The color wheel is your answer for all of this! They can show the value, and schemes and help get you out of the color rut.

Quick run down of the colors used in the color wheel:Three primary colors: red, blue and yellow. They are combined to make the three secondary colors: orange, green, and purple.Combining the secondary colors you get red-orange and blue-green, which are called- tertiary colors

Color Value– this is all about the saturation of the color.  The more black or white added to the color will determine it’s saturation or value.  Going from a light variation to the darkest variation.

Color schemes are created using symmetrical shapes around the wheel, they make combinations that are balanced and harmonious.  The combinations can change, but the spacing of the colors in each combination does not. It is the symmetrical spacing that consistently ensures a harmonious combination.

There are 15 different color schemes with which to combine different colors, but how about if we keep it simple today with a few that we might consider using:

Monochromatic colors are all the hues (tints, tones and shades) of a single color.Analogous color scheme uses three to five colors that are adjacent to each other on the color wheel.Complementary color scheme is made of two colors that are opposite each other on the color wheelMulti-Color (up to 12 colors): Use matching values from each color around the wheel. I am pretty sure this would be called a scrappy collection!Neutral – shade of browns and tans ( a color is neutralized by mixing with its complement)Achromatic – No color, just shades of gray, black and white (grayscale)- This one is kind of hot right now, but only if you throw in a fluorescent color to pop!

Color Tools for Quilters by Diane Harris

The color bible for me is Joen Wolfrom’s Ultimate 3-in-1 Color Tool from C&T Publishing. I use it more than any other color gadget. This handy doodad has guided me through the color selection process many times.I used to glaze over when someone started talking about the color wheel and its tints, tones and shades. It seemed so complicated. Then I learned how to use the Color Tool. My quilts have never been the same.

The Color Tool contains one card for each of the 24 basic colors on the Ives color wheel. Each card shows not only the pure color, but its tints, tones and shades as well. Here’s a quick lesson on those:

• Tints result when white is added to the color.• Tones result when gray is added to the color.• Shades result when black is added to the color.

The tints, tones and shades of any color are not always what you’d expect them to be. When you use the Color Tool, this becomes clear. The card above shows the tints, tones and shades of Chartreuse. The tool has really helped me to understand the concept of tints, tones and shades.

In the spring of 2010 I was designing my block Paisley Punch for Quiltmaker’s 100 BlocksVolume 2. I’d fallen hard for a soft paisley print by Dena Designs for FreeSpirit, and decided to use it as the background. I began looking for fabrics from which to applique my paisley shapes.

I chose some pinks, purples and greens but nothing was working. Everything looked awful against this background. I hit dead end after dead end. (It was much worse than it looks in the photo.). I remembered my Color Tool. I used it to analyze what colors were present in my background fabric. I was surprised to find they weren’t the colors I had thought. This happens sometimes: we see tints, tones and shades but our eyes aren’t yet trained enough to recognize the base colors that are being used.

A survey of everything from green to yellow revealed that the color in the fabric was chartreuse.

Another surprise: the orange in the fabric isn’t actually “orange” but closer to either orange-yellow or yellow-orange.

And the trickiest of all: the pinks and purples. I settled on fuchsia, purple and blue-violet, because all three were present.

Here’s my final palette of yellow-orange, fuchsia, purple, blue-violet and chartreuse. It wasn’t at all what I’d expected but I could see it was going to work.

From there I chose fabrics in a variety of tints, tones and shades from the cards. I could be pretty sure that if a color was on one of those five cards, it would work. Things started to blend and flow and work nicely together.

This is how it usually goes. I love the Color Tool and I would recommend you try it. For what you’ll learn and how much you’ll use it, just $19.95 makes it a steal. Widely available at quilt shops and fabric stores, or online at ctpub.com.
