The Churn Dash
This block is a version of the basic nine patch block because of the
number of grid spaces in it’s design.
****Always add a 1/4 inch seam allowance to each pattern piece be-
fore cutting.****
12” total block size finished,
12 1/2” unfinished

This is the Churn Dash nine patch
block is the #3 block in the
Sampler Quilt.
Just as the Simple Nine Patch Block, the Churn Dash block will be constructed in
three rows of three blocks.
All rows are the same height, and have similar components. Be watchful of the
placement of your fabrics so the finished design will look like the photo.
Stitch the block in rows. Then stitch the rows together to form the block, just as
the Simple Nine Patch Block was formed.

Churn Dash Block
FINISHED SIZES:
4 inch finished triangle squares
4 inch finished rectangle squares
CUT SIZES:
4 1/2 inch center square (A)
2 1/2 x 4 1/2 inch rectangles (D & E)
5 1/2 x 5 1/2 inch triangle squares (B
& C)
Steps:
1. Select three to four contrasting fabrics for this block. (Note: the center
“square” could be a different color than the corner triangles or it could be the
same fabric. Your choice.
2. Cut 1 square of fabric (A) that measures 4 1/2”.
3. Cut 2 squares of fabrics (B) and (C ) that measure 5 1/2”.
4. Cut 2 rectangles of fabric (D) that measures 2 1/2” by 4 1/2”.
5. Cut 2 rectangles of fabric (E) that measures 2 1/2” by 4 1/2”.
6. Draw a diagonal pencil line across the two lighter colored 6 1/2” squares cut in
step 3. Make sure the line goes from point to point.
7. Place the two sets of (B) and (C ) fabric squares so the light fabric is facing
down, and the darker fabric is facing up. Use the pencil line as a guide to
stitch 1/4” on both sides of this line.
8. Each double-triangle patch square should look like this:
9. Carefully cut along the center pencil line. This will give
you 4 squares with a light/dark triangle.
10. Open each triangle block and press the
seam to the dark side. You might note
that each of these finished triangle
block exceeds the 4 1/2” size.
