Conditioning Polymers

The SALCARE® range of conditioning polymers are cationic andcan be used in a variety of personal care products where a conditioningeffect is required.SALCARE® Conditioning Polymers work by means of electrostatic attrac-tion. Hair has an overall slight negative charge due to the amino acidcomposition. Cationic polymers can adsorb onto the negative sites andform a film leaving the surface of the hair smooth and soft.

Conditioning efficacy can be demon-strated by the Rubine Dye Test, whichshows the substantivity of cationic poly-mers to hair. Cationic polymer is appliedto bleached blonde hair swatches, eitheras an aqueous solution or from a sham-poo formulation, excess polymer is re-moved on rinsing and the swatches arethen immersed in a dilute solution ofRubine Dye, which adsorbs onto catio-

nic sites on the polymer backbone andtherefore shows the presence of cationicpolymer on the hair.

SALCARE® SC10 and SALCARE® SC11are both substantive to hair, and theintensity of the dye coloration (shownon the following page) demonstratesthe efficiency of these products at lowaddition levels and in surfactant systems.

SALCARE® SC30

SALCARE® SC30 is a cationic homopolymer of diallyl dimethylammonium chloride (DADMAC), and as such, is an efficient conditionerfor use in after-wash applications.

SALCARE® SC30 is not recommended foruse in conditioning shampoos based onanionic surfactants. The high level of an-ionic charge density leads to a reaction

with the anionic charge of the surfac-tant and precipitates. However limitedcompatibility can be achieved with am-photeric surfactants.

Product

SALCARE® SC30

INCI name

Polyquaternium 6

Description

SALCARE® SC30 is a DADMAC homopolymer, supplied as 40%aqueous solution. The high cationic content makesSALCARE® SC30 self-preserving

Function

SALCARE® SC30 is a cationic homopoly-mer, providing efficient conditioning atlow use levels. It is ideally suited for in-corporation into after-wash hair condi-

tioners (typically emulsions) where thehigh level of cationic charge density al-lows the level of conditioning requiredfor dry or damaged hair.

SALCARE® SC60

SALCARE® SC60 is a solid grade conditioning polymer based onAcrylamidopropyl-trimonium Chloride (APTAC) and Acrylamide, whichprovides performance conditioning to formulations at low additionlevels, making it ideal for use in ethnic hair care.

Product

SALCARE® SC60

INCI name

Acrylamidopropyl-trimonium Chloride/AcrylamideCopolymer

Description

SALCARE® SC60 is an APTAC:ACMcopolymer, supplied as >95%active bead product. The physicalform of SALCARE® SC60 requiresno preservation

SALCARE® SC60 is highly substantiveand even at very low concentrations itprovides very efficient conditioning ef-fects. Due to this efficiency it is recom-mended for dry, damaged or ethnic hair

care, where a high level of conditioningis required. SALCARE® SC60 provides slipand lubricity to formulations, whichmakes it beside hair care products suit-able for liquid syndet type products.

Clear conditioning shampoo formula-tions can be made containing SALCARE®

SC 60 at the recommended use level of

0.1% w/w and commonly used anionicand amphoteric surfactans.

Application Table

Page 11: Ciba - Salcare Conditioning Polymers

11Ciba® SALCARE® • Conditioning Polymers

The SALCARE® range of conditioning polymers are compatiblewith a wide range of commonly used cationic or nonionicingredients, and show limited compatibility with anionic oramphoteric co-ingredients.

When formulating emulsion products such as after-washconditioners or skin creams, it is recommended that theSALCARE® conditioning polymer be dispersed in the aqueousphase.

The SALCARE® range of conditioning polymers is notaffected by moderate shear, such as high speed stirring orshort periods of homogenization, but excessive shear con-ditions are to be avoided. When clear conditioning shampoo formulations are requiredand contain SALCARE® SC10 or SALCARE® SC11, haziness canbe avoided by dispersing the cationic polymer in the waterprior to addition of any anionic or amphoteric surfactants.

If haziness remains a problem for a conditioning shampooformulation containing SALCARE® SC10, we recommendSALCARE® SC11.

SALCARE® SC60 should be predispersed in some of theformulation water before adding to the formulation bulk. Thisprevents the formation of pockets of anionic/cationic pre-cipitate which are difficult to redissolve.

Base Formulations

This formulation is for a medium active conditioning shampoocontaining anionic and nonionic surfactants to give efficientcleansing. While the SALCARE® SC11 gives good clarity andconditioning effects. Hydroxyethyl Cellulose provides viscosityfor this formulation.

Method1 Weigh Aqua into a clean dry beaker add Natrosol 250 HHR

and warm to around 60°C with constant stirring until fullyhydrated.

2 Add SALCARE® SC11, Vibracolor Green AGR 25, Uvinul MS40 and Nipastat Sodium in turn, continuing to stir until thepolymer is completely dispersed.

3 Add Empicol LX28 and Cetiol HE in turn, stirring betweenadditions.

4 Add Fragrance at room temperature, and adjust pH withcitric acid.
