The dialogue takes place during the Holidays accorded Jupiterin the year 129 BCE. It recalls the good old days of

senatorial ascendancy before the reform policies of Tiberius

Gracchus. Note use of two suns to talk about the division

between patricians and plebs during the period of Tiberius'

consul.

Scipio, the chief interlocutor, was born about 185

BCE and adopted by the elder son of Africanus who had

vanquished Hannibal in 202 BCE (thus putting an end to the

Second Punic War). Most distinguished Roman of his time, he

had a long and glorious military and political career. As

consul, he brought about the capture and destruction of

Carthage in 146 and victoriously ended the Roman struggle with

Spain in 133. He was known for his moderate politics and his

association with the circle of friends portrayed in the

Republic as well as Polybius and the stoic Panaetius.
