Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has been taking various initiatives under'Clean Survey 2020', and encouraging people to take part and make cleanliness aregular habit. To ensure children too are part of the initiative, the NMMC has startedpuppet shows in schools with characters like Mowgli from the Jungle Book. The pup-pet show is being staged by the Mudra Theatre Group

Wear helmet; protect your lifeIt is alarming to note that over 5,000 people were killed in Ma-

harashtra last year for not wearing helmet. In addition, more than600 motorists and over 1,000 co-travellers died for not wearingseatbelts last year. What is even more disturbing s the fact thatthe state is among the top five in India to have the highest roadfatalities.

While we are all aware how important it is to follow traffic ruleswhich have been framed for our own safety, most of us tend tohave a casual attitude towards this. It has become a habit to followrules and regulations only if there is strict and stringent imple-mentation of rules by the government. The general excuse for notwearing helmets are: It is uncomfortable and hot; it messes up myhair; I am only going a short distance etc. etc.

According to reports, injuries to the head and neck are themain cause of death, severe injury and disability among users ofmotorcycles and bicycles. Globally, there is an upward trend in thenumber and use of motorcycles and bicycles, both for transportand recreational purposes. This is being accompanied by a consid-erable increase in the number of head injuries and fatalities thatwill only continue to increase if present trends continue unchecked.

Trauma to the brain can occur as a result of an impact, whichcan cause a concussion or open skull fracture, or a jarring motion, such as a quick turn or sudden stop. Even seemingly mild headinjuries, where you don't lose consciousness, can cause perma-nent behavioural and cognitive problems, such as memory loss, inability to concentrate, sleep disorders and, in some cases, per-manent disability or death.

Studies have shown that wearing a helmet can reduce the riskof a serious brain injury and death because during a fall or colli-sion, most of the impact energy is absorbed by the helmet, ratherthan your head and brain. However, just as important as wearing ahelmet is, it is equally important to wear the right helmet. A hel-met that doesn't fit properly or offer sufficient cushioning can giveyou a false sense of security while not actually providing the levelof protection you need. Along with the riders, the pillion riders, irrespective of age, too should wear helmets.

It is unfortunate that compliance to traffic safety rules is linkedto enforcement on the ground by the police. With limited manpow-er, it is really impossible for the traffic officials to be present at allthe place at all the time. Moreover, it should be understood thatlaws are made to save people from potential threat. Without a hel-met the ride may sound thrilling, but it is not safe. Riding a bikewithout a helmet does not just jeopardise the rider’s life, but thatof the others’ as well. It is time that each one of us realise theimportance of abiding by traffic rules and protect not only our livesbut that of the others.

One of our majorarea of life is work. Andvery few of us havework which does notrequire interactionwith people. These peo-ple at work could be ourco-workers, boss, col-leagues, subordinatesetc.

We all would like tohave a good relation-ship with everyone asour work place is limeanother home but withprofessional expecta-tions. Just as we wantharmony in our houseso we can live peaceful-ly, we want harmony atwork place so we canwork efficiently and en-joy our work.

Today we shall talkabout our colleaguesand how we can have aharmonious relation-ship with them.

Let me give you theprocess of a case that Ihelp resolve to a clientof mine. Name ischanged for the confi-dentiality of the client.

Shivani was a 26year young technicianwith a multinationalcompany. She ap-proached me asking forhelp as she felt that hercolleagues gave hermixed signals andsometimes they werevery cold in fact. Shewould be the last one tobe informed if therewas any office party oran outing.

At work thingswere okay but she al-ways had this little nag-ging feeling that theyspoke about heramongst themselvesand probably spoke neg-ative about her.

I listened to hercarefully and from herhistory of her familyand childhood, I rea-lised that she had avery low self-esteem of

Relationship with colleaguesherself and she was indoubt about her capa-bilities.

Being an IT profes-sional, her pay wasgood and she wanted torise in the same orga-nization. I congratulat-ed her on her quicknessin seeking for counsel-ling as many peoplelive with their issuesfor an entire life andlearn to live with theirfears and unhappinessrather than come out ofthem.

I highlighted re-garding her root causeof the issue which wasa low self esteem andwe started work on thesame first.

Positive affirma-

tions, calming themind, chalking out ame time, doing whatshe likes and changingher self image con-sciously to positivestarted giving results.

Simultaneously Igave her the followingtips to find a good rela-tionship with her col-leagues.1. Take an initiative to

smile and give a gen-uine compliment.

2. Not to hesitate inasking for helpsometimes and notshow that you arethe most superiorand can do every-thing.

3. Show interest intheir likings andtheir families. Ev-eryone likes to speakabout their happyand sad moments.

4. Listen carefully anddo not judge anyone.Everyone has someproblem and theygenerally most oftime are actuallylost in their ownproblems looking for

solutions.5. Instead of keeping

quiet and worryingabout what peoplewill say, participlewisely in conversa-tions.

6. Be a little alert andsensitive if your col-league has someproblem.

7. Stay away from theoffice gossip and ig-nore if anyone givesyou some informa-tion.

8. If you find out it isreal that they aretalking I'll aboutyou, confront in anice manner and tellthem you really careabout your col-leagues and would

like to clear theirmisunderstandingor misinformation.Shivani followed all

the above. She also cameregularly for sessionsonce a fortnight.

She is very happywith their work today, has a new look, walkswith confidence but hasa smile and humility. She is happy with hercolleagues and in factshared her experienceabout seeking a counsel-lors help and how shefeels actually nice aboutherself.

My message is thatall relationships areimportant and instead oftreating the symptoms, treat the root cause.

Wish you all veryhappy time at yourwork.

sain Aquatics Complex on the finalday on Wednesday, with bothteams having won 17 gold each.

Earlier Maharashtra Boys andGirls once again showed its domi-nance in Kho Kho event by bag-ging both the titles in the Under -17 category.
