Map & Ranch Guide
Your Official
2013 Guide to
Apple Hill®
Welcome to the 49th Apple Hill® season. Our Growers
Association began with a well founded hope in strong families and
a future in farming traditions. Many of
the original families have passed those
traditions on to the next generations. To
this day we have remained a strong apple
growing area, but our other fruits have
added to this special place as we welcome
first time visitors and longtime friends.
Thoughts of the spring blossom season in
our orchards, fields and vineyards sustain
us during the long winters and give time
for planning improvements for the coming
season. As the summer season approaches
we welcome our new and returning guests
that visit our year-round wineries, brewery and fruit stands. Fresh
local berries, cherries, pears, peaches and a large variety of fabulous
apples supply us with fruits from May through December. Fall pump-
kins and gourds color the way to the Christmas season that opens
with choosing a fresh tree from our many tree growers.
Take time to enjoy all that Apple Hill® has to offer! The beautiful
scenic drive on country roads that lead from orchards to pie shops
– from lavender and flower fields to olive trees – from wineries to
you-pick fruit growers – from crafters to fresh apple juice … We
remain family owned farms with great fresh products.
Our bountiful harvest awaits you. Come visit soon and
find your favorite flavors and places! Our growers
look forward to helping you fall in love with
Apple Hill® for the first time or
all over again!

our 50th Anniversary!Join us in 2014 to Celebrate
Almost 50 and Really NiftyHow many couples do
you know that celebrate a 50th anniversary?
How many organizations last that long and are
even stronger at fifty years?
Next year, 2014, Apple Hill® will reach that
milestone. We’re ready to celebrate with you and are already
planning amazing things showcasing our half a century of success.
And being 49 is also pretty sweet!
What began as an attempt to woo customers to buy directly from
the farmer, has turned into a destination for families all across
northern California and western Nevada. There’s something different
about buying fruit from the farmer who grows it, rather than picking
out trucked in fruit at a grocery store. Many customers have created
relationships with our members. It’s not unusual for mothers and
fathers to say their parents brought them to visit when they were
children. That sure makes a farmer proud - and feeling a little bit older?
In the beginning, the organization used baked goods to entice
visitors to see what our area offered. Apple Hill® wives baked
every type of delicious apple dish their personal cookbooks
contained. The founders called it a “Smorgy” and served
mouth-watering desserts to rave reviews. The success of that effort
increased so much that many of those members decided
to build their own bake shops to personalize the experience.
How do we know our “experiment” has worked? Just this year,
we’ve added four new members. And we diversified long ago to
include flowers, all types of berries, early stone fruit, olive oil,
pumpkins, a brewery, Christmas trees and, oh yes, so many
award-winning wineries and their vineyards. Apple Hill® is so much
more than apples and October!
After almost 50 years, our membership continues to adapt and
change to offer just about everything a visitor could want….and
we will continue to improve with age!

The Apple Hill® Growers Association and El Dorado Transit are
teaming up again this year to provide a free alternative to driving
your car on the busiest harvest weekends. Review the following
information to plan your shuttle trip:
• Two shuttle route options, RED route and GREEN route, are
shown on the fold out map at the back of this publication.
The RED route, serving western ranches, will offer parking and
board passengers at Schnell School. Schnell School is accessed by
Highway 50 at Exit #48 and signs from both east and west will
direct drivers to the Schnell School parking lot.
The GREEN route, serving eastern ranches, will offer parking and
board passengers at the US Forest Service Ranger Station located at
Eight Mile Rd. The Ranger Station is accessed by Highway 50 at Exit
#54 and signs from both east and west will direct drivers to the
Forest Service Ranger Station parking lot.
• Riders may access BOTH western and eastern ranches by
taking advantage of TRANSFER POINTS between the two routes.
TRANSFER STOPS for both RED and GREEN routes are located at
Rainbow Orchards on Saturdays and Sundays and at Larsen’s Apple
Barn on Sundays only.
• The shuttle will run on the following weekends, weather
permitting: October 5th and 6th, October 12th and 13th, October
19th and 21st, and October 27th and 28th.

• Buses are scheduled to arrive every 15-20 minutes.
The Apple Hill® Shuttle is sponsored in part by the El Dorado
County Air Quality Management District, El Dorado Transit, and the
Apple Hill® Growers Association. The shuttle service is free and
allows visitors to relax, enjoy the scenery, and “leave the
driving to El Dorado Transit.”

Pine O’Mine - Pine’O’Mine was once a Christmas tree farm.
We kept the name but cleared the Christmas trees and planted
blueberries, raspberries, apples, and pumpkins. We wanted to
have something for families, so we made our ranch u-pick. Now
we have families coming year after year.
Cardanini’s Pumpkin Patch - Authentic pumpkin patch with
pumpkins on the vine! 18+ varieties of pumpkins growing on
5 acres. Corn maze, BBQ, pumpkin ravioli, and much more. Good
old-fashioned family fun!
Windmiller Farm - No roadside sales. Enjoy your visit to Apple
Hill® ranches!
Bolster’s Hilltop Ranch - You-pick blueberries, you-pick apples,

Bluestone Meadow. - Bluestone Meadow continues the farming
traditions of the land, growing lavender, pumpkins and Christmas
trees. We look forward to developing this twenty acre farm into
a special place to share with our visitors. Enjoy and experience
traditional family farm life and the unique activities, crafts, and
events we will offer.
Bodhaine Ranch - Organic apples and bake shop! Specialty lunches
and a farmers’ market.
Hillside Tree Farm - You choose the perfect Christmas tree and we
will cut it for you, or help you cut your own tree. We provide the saw.
We have a pair of mechanical tree shakers that, as a free service, will
shake out all of the old needles from the interior of the tree so it is
nice and clean!
McGee Christmas Tree Farm - McGee Christmas Tree Farm
has been growing premium quality trees since 1952. Eco-Friendly
Harvesting! “Stump culturing” allows a new tree to grow from the
same base you cut your tree from. Branches left on the stump are
nurtured all year long, turning upward to form new trees. Your
Christmas Tree is a RENEWABLE resource!

What’s Old is New AgainThere is a tradition among Apple Hill®
neighbors that occurs every late winter and early spring. Actually,
this tradition exists all over the county and probably in many more
rural areas. Utility companies and County Road Departments send
out tree trimmers to clear roads and wires that have accumulated
fallen branches and brush. These tree trimmers grind the branches,
logs and brush into wood chips. It is not unheard of for the
trimmers to be offered an apple pie in exchange for wood chips.
These chips are sought after by gardeners and homeowners. They
make wonderful mulch and pathways. They are clean and smell like
the woods. These chippers are very popular people and are regarded
with much affection and respect. Fifteen years ago the roads were
cleared and the brush was gathered and was either dumped in a
landfill or burned. Maybe, just maybe, we are learning.
Recycling is smart, it is easy, and it is right. But … recycling is
not new. When we first opened our bake shops in the ’70s, we
had an excess of apple peels from the apples we peeled for pies.
Farm animals ate some, but soon were saturated, so we began
spreading the peelings in the orchards and mulching them into the
soil. Problem solved. When it dawned on some apple farmer that
the trimmings from pruning the trees each year could be chipped
and mulched into the soil, a large amount of work and air pollu-
tion caused by burning them was eliminated. The same is true with
grape growers and their clippings.
Farmers are great recyclers. Ask any farmer what he does with a
broken hoe or shovel. He fixes it. Our farm has hoes that date back
to 1928. Same blades, many handles later.
Of course, food is not wasted ever. If people aren’t eating it, the
chickens are. Our organic food waste is composted. By recycling in
this way, landfills, septic tanks, and the environment benefit.
Our Apple Hill® visitors can help by using available recycle cans
and barrels. Specially marked containers provided by El Dorado
Disposal/Waste Connections are located at participating ranches.
Look for the recycle symbol posted at ranches and on ranch listings
in the Cider Press, pages 11-24.
Recycling is a win-win situation.
We’ve come a long way, but
have a way to go.– Joan Delfino

Planning your trip …Available resources include this guide, our comprehensive
website, eblasts throughout the year and Facebook. What you find
happening at the ranches depends on the time of year. We are
proud of our “different reasons for different seasons” from flowers
in the Spring; berries in the Summer; apples and bake shops in the
Fall; Christmas Tree farms in the Winter; and beer and wine tasting
year ‘round.
Do ranches take credit/debit cards? Most Apple Hill® ranches take credit/debit cards. Several
ranches have ATMs for your convenience. You can also find ATMs
at local businesses and area banks.
So, as we say, “Come soon, come often and
enjoy your visit!”
