MESSAGE from the CINCINNATI CHAPTER PRESIDENT
Greetings Fellow Compatriots,
My personal appreciation to the members who braved the stormy weather to attend the Patriot’s Day Events, we had
20 who attended. Special mention to the Master of Ceremonies, our Col. Don McGraw who did a great job of last minute
re-adjustment of a podium script it took weeks to develop and minutes to jumble into a memorable service. He had help
from a dozen participants that produced twice that number of compliments from attendees. We also presented several
ROTC/ JROTC medals to deserving students in the Cincinnati area this month.
We now look forward to attending the Ohio Society BOM Meeting in Dayton where our fellow compatriot James D.
Schaffer is to be sworn as the new President for the State of Ohio, joined by Secretary Don McGraw and Paul M. Wilke
as Director at Large.
Fraternally and Patriotically,
Michael B. Gunn

* April 18th, Chapter President Mike Gunn attended the Cincinnati Chapter DAR meeting, at which the program included a presentation about the story behind the Novel "The Four Chaplains", also sometimes referred to as the "Immortal Chaplains" or the "Dorchester Chaplains". They were four United States Army chaplains who gave their lives to save other civilian and military personnel as the troop ship SS Dorchester sank on February 3, 1943, during World War II. They helped other soldiers board lifeboats and gave up their own life jackets when the supply ran out. The chaplains joined arms, said prayers, and sang hymns as they went down with the ship. Their names were George L. Fox, Alexander D. Goode, Clark
V. Poling, and John P. Washington.
* April 18th, the Northwest Territory Chapter celebrated the 25th anniversary of its charter as an Ohio Society SAR chapter. The gathering was held at the Bryan Eagles Dining Hall in Bryan, Ohio, where the Captain Howard Miller Memorial Flag Collection was presented by Compatriot Paul M. Wilke. Representing the Ohio Society at the meeting were Past-President John H. Franklin, Jr. and his wife Betty, Past-President Paul M. Wilke, his wife Valerie, and his granddaughter Anna Insprucker, and Ohio Society SAR 1st Vice-President James D. Schaffer. L to R, NWT Chapter Sect. David L. Lupien, Anna Insprucker, Valerie Wilke, and Compatriot Paul M. Wilke. * April 19th, the Patriot's Day Celebration in Williamsburg, Ohio memorialized 11 Revolutionary Patriots who are buried in the Historic Williamsburg Township Cemetery. A grave marker was also placed at the grave of Revolutionary Patriot James Kain Jr., who was buried here in 1815, marking the occasion of the 200th Anniversary of his death. James Kain was instrumental in assisting Major General William Lytle in establishing the town that became Williamsburg, Ohio, in the late 1700's. Because of the inclement weather, only a brief ceremony was held at the grave sites, and the large attendance was then accommodated at the Williamsburg Presbyterian Church for the presentation of wreaths, remarks and greetings brought by many state and local dignitaries.

Chapter Compatriot John (Jack) Bredenfoerder is a direct descendant of Revolutionary War Patriot James Kain, Jr, and was joined on this occasion by many present-day descendants of Kain, local and from far away. An automated slide show of images of the grave marking can be seen on the Cincinnati Chapter website. Thank you Jack, for spot-lighting the importance of this part of local history and the origins of Williamsburg.
* April 18th, the 2015 ROTC/JROTC NSSAR Recognition Award Program got underway with fifteen ROTC & JROTC units participating in the Greater Cincinnati Area this year, by presenting awards to deserving recipients who have been selected by their respective unit Commanding Officers and Senior Leadership. Military bearing, leadership potential, attitude and scholastic achievement are factors that staff consider in selecting outstanding cadets and/or midshipmen. Five ROTC awards were presented to Cadets as follows: Miami University - US AIR FORCE & US NAVY ROTC Programs, and Xavier University - US ARMY ROTC, with Compatriot Don McGraw presenting the awards. University of Cincinnati - US ARMY & US AIR FORCE ROTC Programs, with Compatriot Lee Wilkerson presenting the awards.
