Cooperative Indian Ocean experiment on intraseasonal variability in the Year 2011 / Dynamics of the Madden-Julian Oscillation

Goal : collect in-situ observations to advance our understanding of MJO initiation process and to improve MJO prediction and simulation.

Key objectives: to document and understand 1) the evolution of heating and moisture profiles associated with the MJO, 2) convective, meso-scale, and synoptic evolution through the life cycle of the MJO, 3) air-sea interaction associated with the MJO

Special remarks : 1)  multi-national participation (Australia, India, Indonesia, Japan, Kenya, Maldives, France,

Seychelles, UK, US) 2)  observation-modeling synergy (forecast, simulation, reanalysis) 3)  endorsement from CLIVAR-SSG.

Real Time Monitoring And Forecasts: CPC will develop a briefing page to house relevant monitoring products for the field campaign.

Provide and interpret MJO index real time model forecasts for the field campaign and provide an assessment for future evolution of the MJO during Week 2-3.

During the field campaign, high resolution model runs will be performed by using the Global Forecast System and Climate Forecast System.

Simulation : CFS ensemble hindcast

Reanalysis : After the field campaign, NCEP / EMC will conduct a reanalysis utilizing DYNAMO data over the experiment domain and period.
