RULES OF THE GAME CINEMANIA
Your Goal You are a movie producer, so your goal in the game is to produce successful film, getting victory points based in part on your Objective Card and in part through other meanings. The game ends when the first player puts his/her fifth different genre film on his/her Production Board, noting the final income for that movie. To be able to write the score on the Production Board, the minimum income for that movie must be at least 10. Set up Cinemania is played using several separate decks of cards.
• A Generic card set • A Production card set • An Event card set • An Objective card set • A Movie Awards card set • A Producer card set
Each player starts with a personal board (called Production Board, used to take note of all the things that happens during the game) and 8 different small tickets, one for each different movie genre, played on the board, face down when you put your film in the production stage, face up when you reveal your product to the public and start to collect your theater income. Put aside the Movie Award stand-up counters. Then each player draws randomly a card from the Producer deck and one from the Objective deck. The first is revealed and put face up in the appropriate space on each player board; the other is looked at by the owner, but will remain face down till the end of the game (its owner may, of course, look at it each time that he/she wants). Each player notes 50 in his/her Budget space (Exception: player with Producer card 009 writes 70 in that space). The game starts with the player with the lower Producer card number, proceeding clockwise. The starting player draws 5 cards from the Generic and Production card sets, taking no more than three cards from a single deck, and then proceeds with his turn according to the sequence of play (see below and for a short summary even each Production Board). Each player after the first makes the same, and game continues, turn after turn, until one of the players reach the conditions that determine the end of the game. Then you proceed to sum up the scores and get the winner! Sequence of Play General • Phase 1) Event card (not in the first turn of the game): starting from the second turn on, the first player
draws a card from the Event deck and shows it to all the other players. The effects of the card are used and are applicable for the entire turn. A few of the Major cards could be used to cancel the effects of several - not all - the Event cards.
Producer • Phase 2a) The phasing player may discard up to 3 cards from his/her hand (not on the first turn) • Phase 2b) The phasing player may discard cards from his/her Production Zone of his/her board (not
Bonus/Malus cards). This is the only phase in the turn where a player may discard Actor/Actress/Director/Crew/Effect cards from the board (it could be forced to discard them for other gaming events, like Malus cards played on him/her by another player).
• Phase 2c) The phasing player may discard an active Major card from his/her board, if there are no cards in his/her Production Zone of his/her board.
• Phase 3) The phasing player gets back to his/her full hand (5 cards, 6 if he/she has an active Major card in
2
play). He/She draws cards from both the Generic and the Production decks up to the limit of his/her full hand. Even in this phase, as at the start of the game, a player may not take from a single deck more than one card plus than from the other (i.e.: if a player has to get 3 cards, he/she may draws two cards from the Generic deck and one from the Production deck, or vice versa; if he/she has to get 4 cards, 2 from each deck, and so on).
• Phase 4) The phasing player may play a Major card, if there is no active Major cardon his/her board, taking care that all the required prerequisites written on the card are made.
• Phase 5) Choosing the movie genre: if there is no genre ticket on the appropriate space on the board, the phasing player must put such a card, face down, in the Movie in Production space of his/her board. If he/she doesn't want to put such a pointer, he/she has to pay 4 for an Independent producer, or 7 for a Major producer.
• Phase 6a) Production phase (Actor/Actress/Director/Crew/Effect): during this phase, a player may put on the Production Zone of his/her board any number of cards among the ones above indicated, taking care that all the required prerequisites written on the cards are made, not putting two Director cards on the same movie, or two equal Effect or Crew cards. All the other cards may be played without restrictions. WARNING: pay attention to the fact that the Effect granted by the Producer or the Major card could be cumulated with an Effect card of the same type (as it is clearly stated on the cards themselves). EXCEPTION: the Production phase of a player may be totally forfeited because of effects from some Malus cards or Event cards.
• Phase 6b) Bonus/Malus cards: during this phase, a player may put on the Production Zone of his/her board any number of Bonus cards, and play Malus cards against the other players, both in their Production Zone than on Box Office movies.
• Phase 7) Box Office income (and Awards income): the phasing player gets the income from the movie that he/she has in the Box Office space of his/her board for that turn (taking in account Malus cards or Event effects, if any). He/She adds this value to the total BoxOffice income for that movie and to the total Budget. He/She also sums up to the total Budget, 3 for each Award he/she has won.
• Phase 8) Production costs: the phasing player subtracts from the total Budget the amount equal to the sum of the costs written on the active cards he/she has on the Production Zone of his/her board (taking in account Malus cards or Event effects, if any).
• Phase 9) Removing a movie from Box Office: the phasing player removes the genre ticket from the Box Office space on the board and writes the total Box Office for that movie under the genre heading in the appropriate space on the board.
• Phase 10) Promoving a movie from Production Zone to Box Office: the phasing player reveals the genre of the movie he/she has in the Movie in Production space and he/she moves it in the Box Office space, looking that the requisites for the genre have been made (otherwise, the basic Box Office for the movie is halved, rounded down). He/she will start receiving the income for the movie on the next turn (EXCEPTION: the card World Premiere will give instantly half (rounded down) of the basic Box Office to the player. This value (maximum 10) is written in the total Box Office space on the board and it is added to the total Budget of that player).
All the Producer phases are made if the player wants to, in the order written above, and only the ones he/she wants. Generic cards (and a few of the abilities on the Major cards) may be played in different phases, according on what is specified on each one.
3
Card Description
• Producer cards (Red border, numbered from 001 to 009)
Each player gets one Producer card at the beginning of the game. On each card there are values for POPularity, TALent, SEX appeal, used to produce the various genres of movies during the course of the game; there is also a Box Office value (BOX), used as an addition to the value of each movie produced. All the Producer cards (less Producer 9) have an ability that grants its owner an Effect and a Bonus for a particular movie genre.
• Production cards There are 4 different kinds of Production cards: Actor (Blue border, numbered from 010 to 036), Actress (Pink border, from 037 to 063), Director (Jade green border, from 064 to 081) and Crew (Orange border, from 082 to 105). Each such card has also a cost which has to be subtracted from Budget each turn that such a card is in the Production Zone.
4
Actor/Actress: they are the basic cards on which you produce a movie; on each card there are values for POPularity, TALent, SEX appeal, used to produce the various genres of movies during the course of the game; there is also a Box Office value (BOX), used as an addition to the VAL of each movie produced.
Director: this kind of card normally has one or more prerequisites before you may put it in your Production Zone. Only one Director card can be in the Production Zone at any given time (but it is possible to replace a Director, discarding it during phase 2). A Director card has only a TALent and a BOX values, plus Bonus and Malus for movie genres.
Crew: this is a kind of card not necessary for producing a movie (it doesn't have any POP, TAL or SEX values), but it has a BOX value, can give Movie Award nominations and a few of them may also give Effects.
5
• Generic cards
There are 5 different kind of Generic cards: Effect (Green border, from 106 to 117), Major (Purple border, numbered from 118 to 126), Bonus (Red border, from 127 to 144), Malus (Gray border, from 145 to 180) and Various (Yellow border, from 181 to 207).
Effects: they are 4 different (Cinematography, Soundtrack, Script and Special Effects) and are requisites for producing the different movie genres (one for each genre, as it is clearly written both on the board than on the genre pointers). They also adds to the basic Box Office of the movie; only one for each type can be played on the Production Zone. A movie produced with all the 4 different Effect cards gets a +5 to its basic Box Office.
Various: each card has a description of what it does.
6
Major: such a card forces the owner to produce his/her movies with all the requisites needed for it. But all the Major abilities are added to the Producer card and with an active Major card a player has an hand of6 cards, instead that the normal 5. Every 2 Nominations on a movie at Box Office equals 1 Movie Award for the requisites needed for playing a Major card (they sum up with Award won and Inflated Credentials).
Malus: these cards may be played against other players both on Box Office movies (only if such a movie has already got a total income of at least 10) than the Production Zone (a few Malus cards requires the presence of cards in such a zone before they could be played; for example, Mole in the Net may be played only if the Effect card Script is in that player Production Zone).
7
Bonus: they may be played on the Production Zone, without limits (if not otherwise specified).
• Movie Award cards (Red border, numbered from 208 to 216) These are used to determine the movie genres that get the Awards during the Ceremony (see below).
• Event cards (Gray border, numbered from 217 to 243) Starting from second turn on, at the beginning of the turn one of these cards is drawn and the event is taken into account.
• Objective cards (Black border, numbered from 244 to 261)
8
Example: producer Jasper at the end of the game has produced four movies (Western income 80, Comedy income 38, Musical income 16 and Adventure income 32); for Victory points from the Objective card gains 8 points for Western (80=>80), 2 points for Comedy (40<38>20) and 1 point each for Musical and Adventure (16>1; 32>1). Game Play
Each Producer must try to produce the genre of movie he/she has put in the Production Box, playing Actor/Actress/Director/Crew/Effect cards, paying attention to the requisites needed for playing such cards and the production costs. At the same time, each Producer may try to undermine the other players movie projects with the use of Malus cards. Choosing the movie genre
Each player chooses secretly the genre of the movie he/she puts in the Production Box, usually considering cards in his/her hand, the Objective card and other movies already in the Box Office space of other players (because if more than one movie of the same genre is at he same in more than one Box office space, the income of each such movie is halved - see below Box Office Income). When the production of a movie starts, it is not possible to change the genre chosen. EXCEPTION: one Major card (nr. 108, Similmount Pictures) permits, during phase 5, to change the genre put in the Production Box. Cards in the Production Zone
There is no limit to the cards each player may put in the Production Zone, other than paying the cost for each such card for every turn they remain in the zone (if not otherwise indicated by a few Event cards or other gaming situations). It is not possible to play two or more equal Effect cards, nor two or more equal Crew cards. It’s possible to play in the Production Zone only if the movie genre to be put in the Production Box has been chosen (these means also Malus cards). Removing a movie from the Box Office This could happen for three different reasons: • the effect of one or more Malus cards. • Movie Awards' Night • if a Producer wants to do it
When a movie leaves the Box Office space, the total Box Office income for that movie (if it is at least 10) is written on the appropriate space for that genre on that Production Board. It is indeed possible that a player may produce the same genre more than time during a game; in this case, only the greater income is written on the board. A movie in the Box Office space on which are played all the 3 Flop cards (US Flop, Asian Flop and European Flop), is forced to leave the Box Office immediately and only half of the total income earned till that moment is registered under the genre heading of that player board. Promoving a movie from Production Box to Box Office
It is possible to promote a movie only if there is no other movie already in that player's Box Office space. To make such move, the requisites required for that action need to be met. If the player has no Major card in play, the movie is produced as an Indipendent (from now on, Indie) movie. It is possible to promote an Indie movie even if only two of the three requisites are met. This is not possible if a Major card is in play and active for that player. In the event of an incomplete Indie promotion (with only two requisites), the basic Box Office of that movie is halved (rounded down, minimum 1). POPularity, TALent, SEX Appeal: the phasing player sum up the total value of these 3 factors present on his/her Producer card (and the Major card, if any) plus all the cards in his/her Production Zone. If such total is greater or equal to the number required on the genre pointer, that requisite is met. Effect: this requisite is met with an Effect card or with the ability on another card (Producer, Major, Crew, Event cards). Movie basic Box Office: this is made up by the sum of the Box Office value on the Producer card(and the Major card, if any) plus all the cards in his/her Production Zone, Malus and Bonus cards too.
9
Each genre bonus present on such cards is +2, while each malus is -3, but if in the same number they nullify each other (i.e. two bonus genre cards and three malus genre cards gives a VAL of -3; three bonus genre cards and two malus genre cards gives a VAL of +2; two bonus genre cards and two malus genre cards gives a VAL of 0). To be put on the Box Office space on the board, a movie must have a minimum basic Box Office of 1. This value is written on the VAL space on the board. Box Office Income
Each turn a player gets the income written in the VAL space of his/her board. Such VAL is halved in each turn that there is another movie of the same genre in play at the same time(WARNING: this means that during a turn it is possible that not all the movies of the same genre at the Box Office be halved, as the income is calculated before moving a movie out of the Box Office) When Malus cards are played on a Box Office movie that modify the VAL of that movie, this reduction is subtracted before halving the movie for more movies of the same genre in play. It is not possible to play Malus cards on a Box Office movie, if that movie has not produced an income (not simply a VAL, but a real income) of at least 10. For the same reason, a movie can't take part in a Movie Awards Night if it has not produced an income of at least 10. In this phase, each player also sums up to the total Budget, 3 for each Award he/she has won, if any.
Optional Rule: To avoid that a poor VAL movie of the same genre of a really good one may spoil the better movie, you may use the minimum VAL of 10 for applying the rule for halving movies of the same genre: if two or more movies of the same genre are simultaneously at the Box Office, the halving happens only if at least two movies have a VAL of 10+; if only one movie has VAL 10+, no movie is halved.
Ending the game
The game ends when a player write on his/her board the final Box Office income for his/her fifth movie (to register it, it needs to be at least 10). Each player takes normally his/her turn. If a player promotes a movie to Box Office, he gets automatically the effect of the card World Premiere, having the chance to playing Award nominations and registering the final income for that movie (such a movie must have a basic VAL of at least 20; with a World Premiere effect of halving such a value; the income is added even to the total Budget of that player). If there are any movies at Box Office with one or more Movie Award nominations, a final Movie Award Night is immediately taken. The possible Movie Awards won by any player do not count for the Budget, but they count for the final score. So, the maximum number of movie genres a player may fill in his/her board is 6.
Optional rule: before the start of the game it’s possible to decide to end the game when sixth, seventh or eighth is written on the board.
Scoring Victory Points At the end of the game the following points are awarded: • Objective card points (each player gets points based on his peculiar objectives, if any) • 2 points for each Movie Award earned by a player • 1 point every 50 in his/her Budget (i.e.: 1 point if Budget 51/100, 2 points Budget 101/150, and so on) • Best movie in a genre: variable (1 point for each movie of that genre produced in the game) • Second best movie in a genre: 1 point (if there are at least 3 movies of that genre produced in the game) • Best movie of all: variable (1 point for each movie produced by that player)
For the last 3 kind of scoring: in case of a draw, award the points to the player who has won more Movie Awards; next, the player with more Budget; next, the player with the lower Producer number. Note: each player may count only 1 movie for every genre in the final scoring; if a player produce more than one time the same movie genre, only 1 is counted for any kind of calculation. Movie Award nominations and Movie Award Night
To take parte in the Movie Award Night a Box Office movie has to have at least 1 Award nomination and an income of at least 10 (not a VAL; it needs to have earned at least 10 of income). A movie that takes part to the Night is removed from the Box Office after that, exactly as if it has been removed by a player's choice or a Malus card. When a movie is promoted from the Production Zone to the Box Office space, its owner may put into play as many Award nominations as are the symbols on the cards used for producing it (they are noted on several
10
different kinds of cards; a few Crew cards may give a nomination if certain requisites are met). The player is free to decide how many, if any, nominations give to his/her movie, but he/she has to make the decision when he/she promotes the movie from Production Zone to the Box Office (and this decision cannot be changed).
Optional Rule: when a movie reaches a Box Office income of 50 it gets a free nomination (2 if a Major is active); the owner of the movie is free to refuse such a nomination. A second nomination is given to a movie that reaches 100 (2 more if a Major is active); this nomination cannot be refused by the owner.
When the Event card Movie Award Night is drawn (or if such a card is played by one of the Producers), the Award ceremony is held at the end of turn: one player draws randomly one card from the appropriate deck (Movie Awards); on each card are noted the Awards won by each movie genre in that Night. If two or more movies of the same genre take part at the ceremony, and that genre is noted on the card for having won 1 or more Awards, use this procedure for assigning them: • higher VAL • more nominations • Active Major card • higher Budget
After the Night, each partecipating player may exchange as many Actor/Actress cards he/she has in hand as he/she want with the same type of cards present in the Discard deck. If more than a player wants to exercise this option, the lower Budget goes first, and so on. Exchanged cards are put in the Discard deck. The Awards won are noted on each player's board; each Award is worth 2 victory points and gives 3 of income each turn to the player. Example of Movie Award Night: Andrew takes part to the ceremony with a Musical of VAL 18 and 2 nominations; Brenda with a Musical of VAL 16 and 3 nominations; Myron with a Horror of VAL 12 and 3 nominations. Card 214 is drawn, that reads: Drama 5 Awards; Musical 3 Awards; Horror 2 Awards; Adventure 1 Award; all the other genres no Award. As there are no partecipating players with Drama or Adventure movies, these Awards are not assigned to anyone; Both Andrew and Brenda have a Musical, but as Andrew's movie is of a higher VAL, he gets both his nominations, while Brenda gets the third one; Myron won two Awards (even if he had 3 nominations). Bankrupt
If a Producer's Budget goes below 0, he makes Bankrupt and is eliminated from play (0 Budget is still considered good for playing). When such an event occurs, all his/her cards are put in the Discard deck (both from the hand then from his/her Production Zone). A movie in the Production Box is cancelled, while one at the Box Office is removed, but its income is scored normally in the apposite space of his/her board, as even a bankrupted player still calculates his/her final score as any other player.
Optional rule: to avoid bankrupt, a Producer may ask for a loan during phase 8 of his/her turn. A Producer may get two loans in a game; to ask for a loan is worth negative victory points as follows: First loan: 10 Budget (-1 Victory Points), 20 Budget (-3 VPs), 30 Budget (-5 VPs) Second loan: 10 Budget (-2 Victory Points), 20 Budget (-4 VPs), 30 Budget (-6 VPs)

Card n° 148/149 Indies Decline It's possible to play it against a player with an active Major card. Card n° 159/160 Death to the Majors It's possible to play it against a player with no active Major card. Card n° 161 Too many men (for a single woman) You can't play it if in the target Production Zone there aren't at least 2 Actor cards and 1 Actress card with SEX 3+. Card n° 170 Sleepless for love battle You can't play it if in the target Production Zone there aren't at least 1 Actor and 1 Actress cards with SEX 6+ (total SEX of the involved cards). Shuffling decks

Myron chooses to draw 3 Production and 2 Generic cards. He put in Production a Drama (and he puts the ticket face down to hide it from the other players). Then, he plays 2 Actor cards ( and ), the Crew card and the Bonus card .Then, he subtracts from the Budget the money spent for playing those cards (total cost 6) and the new Budget is 44. So he ends the turn.

Myron chooses to draw 2 Production and 3 Generic cards. He puts in play Actress and gets the minimum requisites to put his movie at Box Office. But first, he has to pay the costs for the cards (total cost 10), so he writes down 34 in his Budget space. Then he checks that requisites are correct: Screenwriting is granted both by his Producer card than by his Crew card Screenwriter. He has 9 for Talent (and he needs only 7) and 9 for Sex Appeal (needed 8).Movie VAL is equal to 15 (BOX from the cards is 11 plus 2 Bonus for Drama so a +4).Semi Lees grants him also a Nomination (he can't get the same from the Screenwriter cars as he hasn't an Effect Screenwriting card). So, he shifts his Drama ticket from the Production to the Box Office space and put an Award counter near this (to signale his Nomination). Then, he discards all the cards from the Production Zone. End turn.

Having already 2 cards in his hand, Myron for this turn chooses to draw 2 Production and 1 Generic cards. But luck is against him this time and, not having any good cards to start another production, he decides to wait before choosing his next genre. So he forfeits Production phase and passes directly to get Box Office income for this turn.He writes 15 in the Income Box and adds 11 (15 for the income minus 4 for he hasn't choose the genre for his next movie) to his Budget (that goes to 45).And so he ends the turn, but as his Box Movie has reached the limit of 10 in its Income box, player Andrew plays a Malus card against him.
