It surveys the processes and products of human biological and cultural evolution from the perspectives of genetics, evolutionary theory, comparative anatomy, and the fossil record. The course includes an examination of the artifactual evidence and biocultural behavior in the emergence of modern Homo sapiens. In discussion sections students learn the methods of biological anthropology; sections include graded laboratory assignments. Course format includes two lectures per week and one discussion section. This course satisfies the GER non-laboratory requirement in natural sciences. Primate Evolutionary Biology (213:170) – This course examines the fossil evidence for the origin and diversification of the primate order from its beginnings some 60 million years ago up to the evolution of modern species. The course also surveys primate morphology, systematics, and biomolecular studies emphasizing phylogenetic interpretations and paleobiological & paleoecological reconstructions. Course format includes lectures, class discussions, examinations of cast replicas of various extant and extinct primates and occasional films. Human Evolution (213:187) – A detailed survey of all phases of human evolution from the earliest fossil record of apes to the origin and diversification of the hominid family and the appearance of modern peoples. Evidence drawn from paleontology, comparative anatomy, biomolecular studies and archaeology will be considered in an evolutionary perspective. Course format includes lectures, class discussions and examinations of cast replicas of various extinct human species.

Courses Taught: (continued) Primate Behavior and Ecology (213:188) – This course examines the behavior and ecology of the living species of primates with special emphasis on the adaptations and interactions of free-ranging species. The course also surveys the morphology and systematics of living species focusing particular attention on the higher primates -- monkeys, apes, and humans. The application of these studies to our understanding of the evolution of human behavior and language is also addressed. Course format includes lectures, class discussions, examination of extant primate replicas and the showing of films on the behavior of living primates. Biological Anthropology Seminar (213:285) – This seminar is an open discussion of both theoretical and concrete topics in biological anthropology with an emphasis on evolutionary theory. During each class meeting, students give informal presentations based on the readings. These presentations will be followed by a question and answer session. Additionally, the professor will propose new topics for discussion and bring in materials, such as skulls, limb bones, and casts of fossils to further stimulate debate. Following this style, students can be exposed to a wide variety of topics in biological anthropology.
