Regular Knowledge readers will know that the council has been working with
residents, businesses and developers to bring big change to Filwood Broadway, to make it a successful place for local people, with improved community facilities and new shops, including a supermarket.
The ideas for Filwood Broadway, shown at public consultation last October, have been developed into a draft plan. This draft plan has been presented to the Knowle West Project Board and local people for comment.
In March, the council are expected to approve the Filwood Broadway Plan and also ensure
that a site is made available so that plans for a supermarket can be progressed.
Knowle West Regeneration proposals will be presented at public consultation, starting on 23rd March. This will be part of the “City-Wide Site Allocations Consultation”, which will agree whether to protect or develop areas of land across Bristol. Details of how you can take part in this consultation will be publicised nearer the time.
For more information on “Site Allocations” you can visit: www.bristol.gov.uk/siteallocations
For updates on Knowle West Regeneration please visit www.bristol.gov.uk/kwrf
I hope the first issue of 2012 finds you well and optimistic about
the year ahead. I took some time away from Bristol this Christmas, so imagine my surprise when, seated in front of the TV watching the three-part drama ‘Public Enemies’ on the BBC, I thought I glimpsed the familiar red-brick houses of Knowle West...
I asked around and it seems other people had noticed too. Some of the scenes were undeniably shot in Bedminster - did you think you saw your neighbourhood too? As if that wasn’t enough, before Christmas the social networking website Twitter was ablaze with comments about the cast of E4 teen drama ‘Skins’ filming scenes for the new series on Filwood Broadway!
We’re always keen to hear from you. Contact your editor: e-mail [email protected] or call 0117 903 0444.

Barratt Homes is consulting on plans to bring new homes to
Knowle West. A public exhibition is being held to display draft proposals for their site off Novers Hill, in order to receive feedback from the community.
The public exhibition is being held on Monday 20th February 2012, from 2pm to 8pm at Knowle West Media Centre on Leinster Avenue. Feedback received during the exhibition will be used to help shape the final proposals.
Barratt Homes is working with Guinness Hermitage, a local housing association, to bring forward
proposals for up to 120 new homes, of which about a third could be affordable housing.
The site, already identified by Bristol City Council as a potential site for development, could include a new footpath to allow local residents to safely walk up and down Novers Hill without having to walk on the road itself. The proposals would also improve an area of woodland on the site and open it to public use.
For more information about the proposals or the consultation, please contact Ross Pearson on 0800 169 6507 or via email at [email protected]

Support your local community transport!
The Mede Sprint was established in 2003 as a door-to-door community
transport service available to anyone living or working in Knowle West. It has two accessible mini buses (both of which have a ramp for wheelchairs) and a 6 seater people carrier. To book a seat you need to be a member but membership is free and open to anyone living or working in Knowle West. Get an application form from The Mede at Inns Court or phone 0117 904 1220.
At the end of november 2011 there were 445 active members. The Sprint takes members anywhere within the local area, such as the William Budd doctors’ surgeries, Knowle West health Park and Walk-in Centre, shopping, to the hairdressers and
bingo, or to visit friends. If you’re a concessionary card holder then journeys are free and if you’re
under 60 they cost just £1.The Sprint also puts on day trips
twice a week out of the area. They get booked up very quickly so let us know if you’re interested.
In order to increase the Mede Sprint service we require a bank of volunteer drivers. Volunteers need a clean driving licence with a category D1. In return, the Sprint will pay for MIDAS training and other expenses. This is an excellent volunteer job for anyone wanting to get back into paid
employment.Become a member today -
enjoy free or subsidised journeys and have a say in how the service is run. Phone liz or Sue at The Mede on 0117 904 1220.
Farewell to Filwood butchers

In Issue 49 we ran a feature about the changing face of Filwood
Broadway, detailing the recent shop openings and news on the street. As this issue goes to print, we’re sad to report that the butchers on Filwood Broadway closed in early
January. A big thank you to Dean and the staff for their friendly service and for supplying quality produce over the years. It’s a sad loss for the community but we wish them all the best for the future.

I would like to say a big thank you to all of the people who helped Community In Partnership
Knowle West (CIP KW) last year. We had two fun days, an easter parade and treasure hunt for the children, discos, a film night and a sponsored walk to Weston.
There were also bingo nights, the carol bus, a comedy night and a Christmas party for the children.
In 2012 we’re doing the hearts and Stars event to celebrate the work that all volunteers across the community do.
Also, I would like to say thank you to the board of CIP and to all the staff and volunteers for their hard work over the last year.
Contact the CIP office on Filwood Broadway or via Denise at Filwood Community Centre.

Magic moments...
In December, elim@bristol Knowle West hosted a Carols, Comedy and Magic night at
Filwood Community Centre. This was a chance to get into the Christmas mood with some carols and other Christmas classics as well as having special guest john Archer with us.
A fantastic time was had by all, with john delivering some mind-blowing tricks with his unique northern comedy style. Whether it was cards, blindfolds or mind-reading, he brought the house down. everyone who came, young or old, enjoyed the night, with one resident saying that “it was the best and funniest night they’d had in a long time”.
john was ably supported by the
elim@bristol band who sang some old favourites with a bit of a twist. Another resident commented that “it’s not Christmas until you’ve heard Silent night, and this band did it brilliantly.”
A big thank you goes out to all who made it possible with a lot of effort going into decorating the hall and tables as well as some very impressive lights on show.
A special mention should go to Brian, as without him, john Archer wouldn’t have been half as funny.
elim@bristol is looking forward to another fun year and we will let you know of upcoming great events.
If you’d like any more information about the church please contact Pete Millward: 07854 906038 / [email protected]

“Local people have raised concerns about locations suffering the affects of anti-social behaviour and together we want to look at creative ways of using the resources available to take on these problems. As well as working with key partners such as Police and other departments of the Council, we are hoping to empower residents and increase their confidence in their local area.”

The Merrywood Practiceis a GP practice in the William Budd health Centre serving people in the Knowle West area. Our patient group met in january 2012 and they decided it would be a good idea to tell our patients some of the important things they need to know to help them get the best healthcare they can.
If you are a patient at The Merrywood Practice please cut out and keep this information sheet in a handy place, so you can use it to access the healthcare you need.
How can I be seen if I have an urgent problem?
If you are ill and do not feel you can wait until the next routine appointment is available, you can come to Open Surgery which is held every day between 9am and 11am. You do not need to phone first - when you arrive you should book in at the desk and you will be seen on a first come, first serve basis.
The average wait for open surgery is about 35 minutes but this can vary depending on the number of patients waiting to be seen. We try and keep you updated on how long the current wait is. you will be seen either by a doctor or our Advanced nurse Practitioner. If they feel your usual doctor would be best to manage the problem they will arrange an appointment with them.
How do I make an appointment?Call us on 0117 944 9750 or drop in and our
receptionists will book you a routine appointment. If you are registered for eMIS ACCeSS you may also
book your appointment online. We try and encourage patients to see the same
doctor each time so they can get to know you but you can choose each time who you wish to see. you may have to wait a few days to see a particular doctor, especially if your doctor works part time – so try and book your appointments in good time. you can check our website or the noticeboard in reception to see your doctor’s usual working days.
If we have your up-to-date mobile phone number we will text you the day before your appointment to remind you of your appointment.
When patients do not attend the appointments they have booked it makes the wait to see the doctors much longer. If you are unable to make an appointment you have booked please let us know as soon as possible so another patient can be seen. Patients who regularly
miss appointments may be asked to attend Open Surgery only, instead of booking appointments.
What if I am too ill to get to the surgery?
If you are feeling ill and need to be seen but cannot get to the surgery, please phone the practice, if possible, BeFORe 11am, on 0117 944 9750. The receptionist will take your details and a doctor will talk to you to discuss if a home visit is the best thing and when they will be able to see you.
What if I need to be seen and Open Surgery has finished?
If you are feeling ill and feel you need to be seen but you have missed Open Surgery please phone the practice on 0117 944 9750. The receptionist will take your details and a doctor will phone you back. The doctors will aim to call you back within 90 minutes and will decide with you if you need to be seen or can wait until the next routine appointment is available.
Telephoning the practiceIf you need to speak to a doctor please phone
reception on 0117 944 9750. The receptionist will take your details and, depending on the reason for your call, will either:
ask the on call doctor to phone you back – this is • normally within 90 minutes – orask your usual doctor to phone you back, but • this will be after their normal surgery and may be much later in the day.
How do I order a repeat prescription?
you can order a repeat prescription by phoning after 11am• putting a request slip in the prescription box in • receptionordering on line using eMIS ACCeSS•
your prescription will be ready TWO working days following receipt of your request.
How can I find out what’s going on at the practice?

A KWMC volunteer has proved that helping out in your community not only
benefits others – it can also change your life.
Ben Doyle (21) from Shirehampton has been given the vInspired ‘Best new Volunteer’ award for the South West after volunteering for KWMC from May to December last year, teaching older people in the community to use computers. he has recently been offered a job training people to use the new IT system in Bristol hospitals on the strength of his experience with KWMC.
Ben said: “I didn’t have any work experience so I thought the best
way to start was volunteering. Because I knew quite a bit about computers I wanted to do work experience based around this…
So I became a volunteer with KWMC and enjoyed it very much. I got to know so many new people and learned skills, such as teaching, and got experience of working with computers. That helped me get an IT Support job, which I wouldn’t have been able to do without volunteering at KWMC.”
Many thanks and congratulations to Ben from all at KWMC!

Knowing someone you care about is using drugs and alcohol to cope can be devastating to loved ones. Concerned others often display psychological and
physical stress symptoms such as anxiety, depression, insomnia, poor
concentration, anger, teeth clenching, back pain, stomach cramps and many more. These symptoms often impact other family members and give rise to a general feeling of powerlessness for all concerned. If you or someone you know
is in crisis and affected by someone’s drug and/or alcohol misuse, whether it’s your partner, good friend, sibling, parent or child you are worried about, we can
provide a range of support for you.

Local people are excitedly awaiting the opening of the South bristol NHS Community Hospital from 30th March. Amongst the first services to open will be the Urgent Care Centre - which will have all the services of a Walk-in Centre but adults and children will be able to have X-rays and other tests straight away. The Urgent Care Centre will be open 8am to 8pm everyday.
Other services will also be opening in the first few days of April including: day surgery, outpatients clinics, 60 rehabilitation beds, day assessment and community dentists. It will mean that South bristol patients and visitors will be able to avoid trips into the city centre and to have treatment locally at the purpose built hospital. Local people have campaigned for many years for a local hospital and many have been involved in helping to plan the development. The Walk-in Centre services will move from the existing centre in Knowle West Health Park, but the building will continue to host other health related services including GP out of hours and physiotherapy transferred from bristol General Hospital. The new hospital can be found at Hengrove Park, off Whitchurch Lane, bS14 oDE.Further information from Carol Clifford at [email protected]
