David (who celebrates his 100th birthday on June 20!) was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was one of four children born to Ukrainian/Polish immigrants. His father designed and manufactured women’s clothing, among other things.

After graduating, David married and attended the University of Omaha; he then left to enlist in the army during WWII. After discharge from the armed services, he enrolled at UCLA where he received his BA in Economics. He subsequently earned a PhD in Economics from Columbia University, which he considered a great achievement.

After graduation, David worked in various positions as an economist for the U.S. Government (State Department) in Washington, D.C. He specialized in Soviet Affairs and traveled all over the world for his work. It was an exciting time. He also worked for Rand Corporation, which brought him to Santa Monica, CA.

David met his second wife, Esther, 35 years ago at a dance in West LA. They lived in Southern California for a while before moving to Northern California—first to Walnut Creek, then to Santa Rosa—to be near his sons who all now reside in the greater Bay Area—Napa, Berkeley, and Occidental. They lived in Oakmont Gardens for a short while, prior to moving to Brookdale Paulin Creek, where they have lived for over three years.

Both David and Esther particularly like the speakers at Friendship Circle luncheons. They are still traveling (mostly cruises), which they thoroughly enjoy. David most recently enjoyed a cruise to Mexico with his son, Jeffrey. He spends a lot of time walking around Santa Rosa with his son, Benjamin. Mazel Tov to our

Lunch at Left Bank Brasserie & Tour of The Bay ModelThursday, June 20 Larkspur & Sausalito Board our private coach for a day with Friendship Circle! After enjoying a delicious, French lunch at Left Bank Brasserie in Larkspur, we’ll make our way to The Bay Model for a private tour of the incredible hydraulic model of the entire San Francisco Bay and much of the Sacramento River Delta!

Lunch at Left Bank Brasserie: La Rive Gauche (The Left Bank) is the southern bank of the River Seine in Paris. "Rive Gauche" or "Left Bank" generally refers to the Paris of an earlier era: the Paris of artists, writers and philosophers. While it remains a haven for artists and bohemians, it is also the site of many wonderful and famous brasseries, including Les Deux Magots, Café Flore and Brasserie Lipp. Enjoy an all-inclusive lunch at this fun, French restaurant! Please choose one of the following entree options and include your choice when making your reservation:

NIÇOISE SALADEseared salmon, green beans, tomatoes, fingerling potatoes, avocado, tapenade,

anchovy, roasted red bell peppersLAMB SANDWICH

herb marinated leg of lamb, basil, roasted peppers, aïoli, black olive tapenade, arugula salad

JACQUES PÉPIN'S SANDWICHgrilled eggplant, sun dried tomatoes, roasted peppers, red onions,

mozzarella cheese, mixed greensFRENCH ONION SOUPE GRATINÉE & SALADE VERTE

baguette, Emmenthal cheesesalad includes butter lettuce, fines herbs, shallots, Dijon vinaigrette

About the Bay Model: Housed in an unassuming low-slung building on Sausalito’s waterfront, The Bay Model was built by the Army Corps of Engineers in 1956-57 to demonstrate what would happen if the South Bay were dammed and infilled (as had been proposed). Using simulated tidal action, the Corps was able to prove that the results would be disastrous for the bay environment, and the plan was shelved. The Bay Model is still owned and maintained by the Corps. Water flows through the delta, into the bay, and out through the miniature Golden Gate Bridge. At over 1.5 acres, it’s an enormous contraption! You can wander around, though no swimming is permitted! In addition to The Bay Model, there are exhibits on the history of Bay Area watercraft, the Marin Shipyard, World War II, and the modern working life of the bay. Please wear comfortable shoes, dress in layers, and be prepared to walk and stand as you observe the model.

Cost: $62 Friendship Circle Members; $78 Guests (includes round-trip private transportation, lunch at Left Bank, private tour of The Bay Model, tax, gratuity, and snacks along the way).

Transportation: Meet the bus at least 15 minutes prior to departure. Bus LEAVES at 10:15 AM sharp! from Congregation Beth Ami (4676 Mayette Ave, Santa Rosa) Please park in the overflow parking lot. Rosie the Riveter & Lunch at AssembleWednesday, August 7 Richmond

We Can Do it! Join Friendship Circle on this inspiring excursion—lift your spirits and relish in the values that energized the World War II home front and transformed American government, industry, society, and culture. Before heading to Rosie the Riveter, we will enjoy a delicious lunch at Assemble. With its unique setting, great food and perhaps the

most beautiful and inclusive views in the entire Bay Area, Assemble Restaurant has been wowing its patrons since it opened in February of 2013. Lunch will include your choice of three entrees, beverages, dessert, tax and gratuity. Please choose one of the following entree options and include your selection when making your reservation:

GRILLED CREEKSTONE TRI-TIP peppercorn rub shallot butter

SPINACH LASAGNA mozzarella and pesto ricotta

ATLANTIC SALMON brushed in dill butter, wrapped in flakey dough

After lunch, we’ll walk across the street and spend a couple of hours visiting Rosie the Riveter. We will begin our visit with a short film, followed by a docent/Park Ranger-guided tour of the exhibit, and then enjoy free time to explore. Together we will honor the efforts and sacrifices of American civilians on the World War II home front. Find out how they lived, worked and got along. Rosie the Riveter features interactive and educational exhibits as well as a variety of park films, which show on a regular schedule in the onsite theater.

Cost: $65 Friendship Circle Members; $79 Guests (includes round-trip private transportation, lunch at Assemble, private tour of Rosie the Riveter, tax, gratuity, and snacks along the way).

Transportation: Meet the bus at least 15 minutes prior to departure. Bus LEAVES at 10:15 AM sharp! from Congregation Beth Ami (4676 Mayette Ave, Santa Rosa) Please park in the overflow parking lot.
