Fall 2014

CIRCLE TIMENews from The Children’s Center

The Children’s Center conducts two major fundraising campaigns each year.

Mid-year, donors have the opportunity to contribute to Building Blocks, which supports our students, age six weeks to six years, with much needed scholarships. Eighty-nine percent of our families pay only what they can afford. Your generous donations make it possible for children of working parents to have a head start for a better life.

Our December appeal is your opportunity to contribute to the daily operation of The Children’s Center as it provides year-round affordable, quality educational programs for the children of our working families.

The Children’s Center depends on our generous supporters to fulfill our mission.

Please join us in investing in our community’s children.

And a good time was had by all when the cast of the iconic play being performed at the May River Theatre paid a visit to the students at The Children’s Center in August.

The visit preceded a special performance of You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown with all proceeds being graciously donated to The Children’s Center by The May River Theatre. Allen and Kim Ward hosted a reception before the play at their historic Fripp House in Bluffton.

Local businesses supporting the event included Celebrations Catering and Events, Bess’ Delicatessen & Catering, Charlie’s L’Etoile Verte, Southern Wine & Spirits and Coastal Fundraising.

Special thanks to the May River Theatre, Allen and Kim Ward for hosting the reception at their home, the historic Fripp House and to Reedy Newton, Meccay Nimmer and Garfield Moss for providing golf cart transportation between venues.

You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown!

The children were all smiles when the cast of ‘You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown’ visited The Children’s Center. Pictured are cast members: Benji Morgan as Charlie Brown, Kelly Ard as Lucy, Emily Rice as Sally and Adam Rich as Schroeder.

Pretty Papers in the Village at Wexford will hold another shopping day on September 25 from 2 to 6 p.m. with 20% of all sales benefiting The Children’s Center. This is an easy way for all who shop there to maximize this fundraising opportunity for the Center.

Site Director Tonya Jenkins never knows what challenges she will face when she arrives at The Children’s Center each day.

Case in point . . . one day in late Spring, a young, pregnant mom with two small children found herself homeless after a family member put them out of the house. Her children, 11 months and two years old, were attending The Children’s Center.

All alone and very afraid, she approached Tonya after a night of sleeping in her car with her children. In her years of service at the Center, Tonya has learned the value of networking with other community non-profits. She personally made calls to Deep Well, Family Promise, First Steps and the Salvation Army, and heard back from Family Promise that they could house the family starting on the following Monday as long as the mom passed their background check. But what was she to do over the weekend?

Tonya’s call to Deep Well paid off at the end of the day. They paid for the family’s lodging over the weekend and Tonya made sure they had enough gas and food to see them through. Crisis averted!

Tonya says the mom peeks in her office daily on her way to taking her children to class and “the smile on her face is priceless.” Caring staff members like Tonya is what makes The Children’s Center so special. Truly above and beyond.
