MagnetronReplacement
[Descriptions]
This Fleet Circular applies to all Fleet One Vessels and the LNG Jupiter being contracted to the
Imtech Maintenance Service Agreement (MSA)
SMS ZZ‐S‐P‐07.50.00. Section 5. “Maintenance of Radar and Scanner” states
“The
PMS
of
Radar
and
Scanner
shall
be
carried
out
as
per
manufacturer
instruction.
The
magnetron of Radar shall be renewed after 8000 hrs or one year of its use or when
deterioration in radar performance is noticed. The radar and its scanner & motor unit shall be
inspected and serviced by authorized workshop during docking repairs of vessel. Spare
magnetron for each radar shall be available on board. “
The following information is to give guidance to Ships Master’s on the practical application of
the above SMS requirement to the Imtech MSA.
1. Radar performance will be monitored by the Master and should this deteriorate then
Imtech must be informed immediately.
2. In addition Imtech technicians will check on radar performance on each attendance on
board and a record of the performance will be kept by Imtech head office.
3. Using this performance monitoring technique Imtech will inform the Master when the
magnetron should be changed.
4. This simple Condition Based Monitoring will replace the previous practice of changing
the Magnetron after a set number of running hours.
5. Imtech estimated time of replacement is S ‐ Band Radar : approx. 15, 000 hrs (=
approx.. every two years) / X ‐Band Radar : approx. 9, 000 hrs ( = approx .once a year)
6. Under normal circumstances Imtech attendance should be arranged to change the
Magnetron as there are certain inputs (reset running hours, etc) into the radar that
are required once a new Magnetron is installed and only an approved service engineer
can do this. At the same time a spare Magnetron will be supplied by Imtech
7. IF AT
ANY
TIME
DURING
A
VOYAGE
THE
MASTER
DECIDES
THAT
THE
PERFORMANCE
OF THE RADAR IS ENDANGERING SAFE NAVIGATION SHIPS STAFF SHOULD
IMMEDIATELY CHANGE THE MAGNETRON. The Master’s authority overrides the
normal practice listed above.
8. If the Magnetron is changed by ships staff then a service request must be sent to
Imtech for attendance at the next port.
9. At the next port Imtech will attend to make the required inputs into the radar. They
will also supply the ship with a spare Magnetron.
10. If you do not have a spare Magnetron for each radar on board then Imtech and the
Office should be informed immediately.
