Electrostatic DischargeStatic electricity occurs when friction produces an electric charge that accumulates on a non-grounded object. Then the non-grounded object contacts the surface of any grounded object, the static charge can quickly jump to the grounded object. This process is called electrostatic discharge (ESD). ESD can permanently damage many computer components.

Page 5: CIS (Computer Information Systems) - vega.jeffco.eduvega.jeffco.edu/vsebold/WorkKeysCareerTrainCIS[1].docx  · Web viewChoose the correct meaning of a word that is clearly ... a

The following measures can help protect against ESD.

Set the room temperature between 72-77 degrees Fahrenheit and the humidity between 40-70%.

Set the PC on an antistatic mat. Before handling any components inside the computer, put on an antistatic wrist strap and

attach it to the metal PC chassis using an alligator clip. If you do not have a wrist strap, maintain constant contact with the computer chassis

while working inside of it. When handling a circuit board, do not touch the metal connectors. Sensitive components should be stored in static-shielded bags.

1. What is the cause of static electricity?a. Friction produces an electric charge that flows through a grounded objectb. A grounded object contacts the surface of a non-grounded objectc. Friction produces an electric charge that accumulates on a non-grounded objectd. A non-grounded object is provided with too much voltage

2. Why should we take measures to protect against electrostatic discharge (ESD)?a. ESD can cause serious burnsb. ESD can damage computer componentsc. ESD can make your computer run more slowlyd. ESD can cause fires

Cleaning your ComputerKeeping your system clean is one of the best steps you can take to keep it running efficiently. Consider the following facts when cleaning your computer:

When performing routine cleaning, inspect the system components. You may identify components that are worn or broken. Dark areas on electrical components often indicate that the component is burned out or faulty.

Before you clean computer components, power down and unplug your system. Allow components to cool for at least 30 minutes before handling them.

Built-up dust can restrict airflow inside the computer, keeping components from cooling properly. Methods for keeping your system free of dust include::

o Remove dust using an anti-static vacuumo Blow off dust using compressed airo Wipe off dust using a natural bristle paintbrush

To maintain a roller-ball mouse, remove gunk from the roller contacts and ball regularly. To clean a keyboard, use compressed air or an anti-static vacuum. Gently wipe sticky

keys with a damp, lint-free cloth or cotton swab.

1. What is the biggest benefit to keeping your system clean?a. Routine cleaning makes it easier to find filesb. Routine cleaning helps keep the computer running efficientlyc. Routine cleaning keeps the computer looking niced. Routine cleaning prevents the computer from running efficiently

2. Why should you inspect the system components while cleaning?a. To locate componentsb. To see if expansion slots are availablec. To identify worn or broken componentsd. To keep documentation of component model numbers

3. Why should you leave your system powered-off and unplugged for 30 minutes before handling components?

a. Stored electricity in the components takes time to dischargeb. The computer case will not open for 30 minutes after it is powered-offc. You should review the manual for 30 minutes before handling the componentsd. Components may be hot immediately after the computer is powered-off

4. What should you do with a sticky keyboard?a. Run it through a dishwasherb. Blow off the keyboard with compressed air

Page 7: CIS (Computer Information Systems) - vega.jeffco.eduvega.jeffco.edu/vsebold/WorkKeysCareerTrainCIS[1].docx  · Web viewChoose the correct meaning of a word that is clearly ... a

c. Wipe keys off with a damp, lint-free clothd. Spray the keyboard with a liquid-based cleaner and wipe dry

Starting a ComputerThere are several stages that a computer goes through when it is powered on. The process is as follows:

1. The processor is powered on. It then locates a hard-coded memory address containing code that points the processor to the location of the BIOS program.

2. Next, the BIOS program is loaded by the processor. The BIOS first runs a power on self-test (POST). POST carries out the following steps:

1. Checks the BIOS chip and tests CMOS RAM.2. Loads the video card BIOS, powers on the video card, and displays information

on the monitor.3. Checks other devices for BIOS programs, like hard disk controllers, and loads

them.4. Tests hardware devices, including the video card, storage devices, ports,

keyboard, mouse, and system memory.3. After completing its POST tests, the BIOS uses settings in CMOS and device information

to configure the identified hardware devices. System resources are automatically assigned to Plug and Play hardware devices.

4. Next, the BIOS checks the CMOS for the boot order and searches for a boot drive.5. The BIOS then searches the boot drive for the master boot loader, which takes over

control of the system.6. The master boot loader locates and runs the operating system loader, which takes over

control.7. The operating system loader finishes loading the operating system, including additional

programs, and configures devices so the operating system can use them.

1. What is the first thing that happens when you start a computer?a. Power is supplied to the processorb. The BIOS program is loadedc. Information is displayed on the monitord. The master boot loader runs the operating system loader

2. What must occur before information is displayed on the monitor?a. The master boot loader must be locatedb. The BIOS must search for the master boot drivec. Tests are conducted on the keyboard and moused. The video card BIOS is loaded

3. Why must the BIOS check CMOS for the boot order?a. To locate the boot drivers b. To determine which drive is the boot drive

Page 8: CIS (Computer Information Systems) - vega.jeffco.eduvega.jeffco.edu/vsebold/WorkKeysCareerTrainCIS[1].docx  · Web viewChoose the correct meaning of a word that is clearly ... a

c. To configure the identified hardware devicesd. To test hardware devices in order

4. What is the main purpose of the master boot loader?a. It finds the operating system loader and passes control of the system to itb. It identifies the boot orderc. It configures devices so the operating system can use themd. It controls the system while the operating system is running

HDTV SupportThe difference between an LCD monitor and an HDTV is minimal. You can buy a monitor that supports HDTV, or an HDTV that can also function as a monitor. HDTV resolutions are:

1280 x 720 1920 x 1080

Video content that is designed for a resolution of 1920 x 1080 using progressive scanning is called “Full HD”. Progressive scanning means each line on the screen is redrawn in order. Full HD is therefore commonly called 1080p (1080 progressive).

Inexpensive TVs and monitors operate at lower resolutions or using interlacing instead of progressive scanning. Interlacing means every other line is drawn with each pass. They are not capable of displaying the video content in full HD. 720p (1280 x 720 progressive) and 1080i (1920 x 1080 interlaced) displays may be labeled as HD, but they do not support “Full HD” content. 720p and 1080i are comparable in quality, offering an improvement over standard definition.

1. Which of the following is considered “Full HD”?a. 720ib. 1080pc. 720pd. 1080i

2. Which technology draws every other line with each pass?a. Progressive Scanningb. LCD Monitorsc. Interlacingd. Full HD

3. Why should you not expect an inexpensive TV to provide Full HD support?a. They use lower resolutions or interlacingb. They are usually smallerc. They only can support 1080pd. They only support standard definition

Page 9: CIS (Computer Information Systems) - vega.jeffco.eduvega.jeffco.edu/vsebold/WorkKeysCareerTrainCIS[1].docx  · Web viewChoose the correct meaning of a word that is clearly ... a

Video Card CoolingVideo cards have an integrated component called the graphics processing unit (GPU). The GPU renders information in a format that can be displayed on a monitor. When rendering these video graphics, especially when rendering in 3D, the GPU can become very hot. Video cards also have integrated memory chips which can become very hot. Therefore, the GPU and memory often require some method of cooling.

Video card cooling can be accomplished via passive heat sinks or through the use of cooling fans and fan shrouds. Older video cards typically have a passive heat sink that covers only the GPU. Newer ones provide cooling for the GPU as well as memory.

1. What component of a video card is used to render video graphics?a. Memoryb. Heat Sinksc. Central Processing Unitd. Graphics Processing Unit

2. Based on the first paragraph, when does the GPU become hot?a. When the system is turned onb. When rendering video graphicsc. When the GPU is overclockedd. When a passive heat sink is installed

Twisted Pair CablesTwisted pair cables are designed to support a variety of fast, modern network standards. Twisted pair cables are composed of two wires that carry data signals. One wire carries a positive charge, and the other carries a negative charge. The individual wires in the pair are made of 22 or 24 gauge copper wiring.

Each wire is surrounded by PVC or plenum plastic insulation. Plenum cable is used when wiring above ceiling tiles because it is fire resistant and non-toxic. PVC cable is toxic when burned; therefore it cannot be used to wire above ceilings.

The two wires in the pair are twisted together to reduce a negative effect called electromagnetic interference (EMI). Twisting the wires causes EMI to affect both wires equally, thus cancelling out the interference. An outer sheath bundles multiple wire pairs together. One way of classifying twisted pair cable is based on the type of outer sheath:

Shielded Twisted Pair (STP) provides added protection against EMI, because it includes a grounded copper shield around the bundle of twisted pairs or around each pair.

Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) does not provide enhanced protection against EMI because it is designed without a grounded copper shield. UTP cables are less expensive than shielded cables and more flexible, making them easier to work with.

1. How many wires carry the data signals in a twisted pair cable?a. 1b. 2c. 3d. 4

2. When should you use plenum twisted pair cables?a. When wiring in the floorb. When wiring in the wallsc. When wiring in the ceilingd. Always

3. Why are the pairs of wires twisted together in twisted pair cables?a. Twisting pairs makes the cable strongerb. Twisted pair cables are more flexible than straight pair cablesc. Twisted pair cables are cheaper than straight pair cablesd. Twisting pairs reduces electromagnetic interference

4. What type of twisted pair cabling would you choose if you need added protection against EMI?

d. All types offer the same protection

MAC AddressesA Media Access Control (MAC) address is a hexadecimal number that is coded into the ROM of every Ethernet Network Interface Card (NIC). The MAC address is a unique 48-bit, 12-digit hexadecimal number (hexadecimal numbers range from 0-9 and A-F). MAC addresses are often written as 0B-C1-D4-96-AC-AF or 0BC1.D496.ACAF. Dashes, periods, or colons may be used to separate the address into parts. The MAC address is always unique based on its design. The first 6 digits of the address are assigned to an individual manufacturer. The manufacturer assigns the remaining 6 digits of the address, choosing a unique value to identify the host address. If a manufacturer uses all of the addresses they were originally assigned, they can apply for an additional set of MAC addresses.

Networking devices use the MAC address when sending frames to other devices within a subnet. Thus, in order for two networked devices to communicate, they have to know the MAC address of the destination device. These hosts discover the MAC address of a device by using the Address Resolution Protocol (ARP), which queries Ethernet hosts based on their IP address. After the sending host finds the MAC address of the destination, it transmits data in frames addressed to the destination host.

1. MAC addresses use which numbering system?a. Decimalb. Binaryc. Hexidecimald. Trinary

2. Which symbol cannot be used to separate the parts of a MAC address?a. Slashes /b. Dashes -c. Colons :d. Periods .

3. What protocol does a network device use to discover the MAC address of another host?a. Network Address Translation (NAT)b. Domain Name Service (DNS)c. Address Resolution Protocol (ARP)d. MAC Translation Protocol (MTP)

4. What part does the MAC address play in network communication?a. It identifies a particular Internet addressb. It specifies the destination of an Ethernet framec. It specifies hosts that belong to a particular VLANd. It routes packets between TCP/IP networks

Connecting DevicesWhen connecting Ethernet devices, the transmit (Tx) wires from one device must connect with the receive (Rx) wires on the other device.

Straight-through cables do not cross any wires. Each wire connects to the same pin on each end (pin 1 connects to pin 1, pin 2 to pin 2, etc.). Straight-through cables are used when the crossing is performed with a hub or a switch. Specifically, straight-through cables are used when connecting:

Computer to a hub or switch port

Router to a hub or a switch port

Hub or switch port to a special uplink port on a hub or a switch

Crossover cables cross the transmit wires on one connector with the receive wires on the other end. Crossover cables are used when crossing is not performed automatically (such as with a hub or switch). Specifically, crossover cables are used when directly connecting:

Computer to computer, router to router, or computer to a router directly

Special uplink port on a hub or a switch to another hub or a switch’s uplink port

Computer or a router to a hub or switch’s uplink port
