Figure 2-2 Mounting Screws

Placement ConsiderationsTo prepare to install the VPN 5002 chassis, consider the following items:

• Do not place the chassis on the floor, because it can accumulate dust. Asalternatives to rack-mounting, you can place the chassis on a sturdy table orsolid platform.

• A clean, air-conditioned environment is ideal.

• The front of the chassis requires adequate clearance for ESP card addition orreplacement and for cable connections. The ventilation side of the chassisrequires adequate clearance for air circulation. Allow at least 2 feet of frontclearance and 6 inches of clearance on the side with the ventilation opening.

• If you stack other equipment on the chassis, do not exceed 35 pounds ofevenly distributed weight on top of the chassis. Additional weight might bendthe case.

• If you place the chassis on a tabletop, attach the four rubber feet on the bottomof the chassis. The rubber feet are supplied in the accessory kit.

Chapter 2 Installing the ChassisSafety Guidelines

VPN5002.fmb Page 4 Thursday, April 19, 2001 12:40 PM

Warning To prevent the Cisco VPN 5002 concentrator from overheating, do not operate it in an area that exceeds the maximum recommended ambient temperature of 104°F (40°C). To prevent airflow restriction, allow at least 6 inches (15.2 cm) of clearance around the ventilation openings.

Warning The VPN 5002 concentrator must be installed into a rack that is secured to the building structure.

Warning This unit is intended for installation in restricted access areas. A restricted access area can only be entered by service personnel through the use of a special tool, lock and key, or other means of security, and is controlled by the authority responsible for the location.

Safety GuidelinesTo ensure your safety and minimize potential damage to equipment, follow theseguidelines before you attempt to move or work on the VPN 5002 chassis.

Warning Do not work on the system or connect or disconnect cables during periods of lightning activity.

Warning To prevent personal injury or damage to the chassis, never attempt to lift or tilt the chassis using the handles on the ESP cards or other components (such as power supplies, fans, or cards); these types of handles are not designed to support the weight of the unit. Lift the unit only by using handles that are an integral part of the chassis, or by grasping the chassis underneath its lower edge.

Warning Before you work on a chassis or work near power supplies, unplug the power cord on AC units; disconnect the power at the circuit breaker on DC units.

Warning Ultimate disposal of this product should be handled according to all national laws and regulations.

Warning Before you work on equipment that is connected to power lines, remove jewelry (including rings, necklaces, and watches). Metal objects will heat up when connected to power and ground and can cause serious burns or weld the metal object to the terminals.

Warning Only trained and qualified personnel should be allowed to install or replace this equipment.

Warning A voltage mismatch can cause equipment damage and might pose a fire hazard. If the voltage indicated on the label is different from the power outlet voltage, do not connect the chassis to that receptacle.

Warning Blank faceplates (filler panels) serve three important functions: they prevent exposure to hazardous voltages and currents inside the chassis; they contain electromagnetic interference (EMI) that might disrupt other equipment; and they direct the flow of cooling air through the chassis. Do not operate the system unless all cards and faceplates are in place.

Warning An uncovered slot is a high energy hazard. Do not place your hand or any object other than an ESP card into a slot. Contact with any interior part could lead to a dangerous shock of electricity.

Step 1 Wear an electrostatic discharge (ESD) preventive wrist strap and attach it toground (such as the metal rack).

Step 2 Loosen the captive thumbscrews on both ends of the ESP card or cover plate youwant to remove.

Step 3 Grasping only the handles on both ends of the ESP card or cover plate, slide it outof its slot (Figure 2-21).

Configuring and Turning On the Power

This chapter describes how to use the power supply in the Cisco VPN 5002concentrator. The chassis is shipped standard with AC power, but you can orderan optional DC power supply. For information about switches and ports, see the“AC Power Supply Specifications” section on page 3 and the “DC Power SupplySpecifications” section on page 5.

ContentsThis chapter contains the following sections:

• Power Safety Warnings, page 1

• Using the AC Power Supply, page 2

• Using the DC Power Supply, page 5

Warning Before you work on a chassis or work near power supplies, unplug the power cord on AC units. Disconnect the power at the circuit breaker on DC units.

Warning Before you work on equipment that is connected to power lines, remove jewelry (including rings, necklaces, and watches). Metal objects will heat up when connected to power and ground and can cause serious burns or weld the metal object to the terminals.

Warning Secure all power cabling when you install this unit to avoid disturbing field-wiring connections.

Warning Care must be given to connecting units to the supply circuit so that wiring is not overloaded.

Warning Incorrect connection of this unit or connected equipment to a general-purpose outlet could result in a hazardous situation.

Warning Do not touch the power supply when the power cord is connected. For systems with a power switch, line voltages are present within the power supply even when the power switch is off and the power cord is connected. For systems without a power switch, line voltages are present within the power supply when the power cord is connected.

Using the AC Power SupplyThe chassis is shipped with a standard AC power supply. For information aboutthe optional DC power supply, see the “Using the DC Power Supply” section onpage 5. The following section describes how to attach the power cord retainer.

Step 8 Turn on the DC power source.

Wiring the Alarm ConnectorThe –48 VDC power supply includes a receptacle for an alarm connector. If thepower supply malfunctions, the system sends an alarm to an external alarmdevice. The alarm relay switch supports normally open and normally closedpositions. An alarm device that uses a normally open switch retains an opencontact when there is no alarm. A normally closed device retains a closed contactwhen there is no alarm.

Figure 3-8 shows the wire locations for the alarm connector.

Wire the provided alarm connector as described in the following steps.

Step 1 Strip 0.125 inches (.3175 cm) of the insulation from the end of two 14 AWGwires. Do not strip more than 0.125 inches.

Step 2 Insert a medium flat-blade screwdriver into the connector slot above the secondhole, and insert the Comm wire into the second hole from the left (Figure 3-9).

Step 4 Repeat Steps 2 and 3 to insert the other wire:

• For a normally open alarm, insert the wire into the far left hole.

• For a normally closed alarm, insert the wire into the far right hole.

Step 5 Plug the alarm connector into the top connector on the front of the chassis(Figure 3-10).

Figure 3-10 Plugging In the Alarm Connector

If you plug in the alarm before you connect the power, the alarm activatescontinuously. To avoid activating the alarm, plug in the power before you plug inthe alarm.

Resetting an AlarmIn the event of a power interruption or power failure to the ESP cards or VPN 5002system, the power alarm activates. To reset the alarm, push the alarm cut-offbutton on the front of the concentrator chassis (Figure 3-11).

Note The Sys Ready LED on the ESP card in slot 0 must light green beforeyou push the alarm cut-off button.

Replacing the Air Filter

Under normal operation, you do not need to replace the air filter. Replace the filteronly if an excessive amount of dirt and dust collects over an extended period oftime, or if an ESP card has a lit Over Temp LED. See the Cisco VPN 5002 and5008 ESP Card Hardware Guide for more information about resolving a hightemperature condition. Cisco Systems provides an extra filter with each unit tominimize the concentrator’s downtime.

Warning Before you work on a chassis or work near power supplies, unplug the power cord on AC units. Disconnect the power at the circuit breaker on DC units.

Warning Only trained and qualified personnel should be allowed to install or replace this equipment.
