Citing sources: When do you need to?

• When you use or refer to someone else’s words or ideas.

• When you copy the exact words or a “unique phrase.”

• When you reprint any diagrams, illustrations, charts and pictures.

When is it okay not to cite?

• When you are writing your own experiences, your

own observations, your own insights, your own

thoughts, your own experimental results, or your own

conclusion of a subject.

• When you are using common knowledge.

• When you are compiling generally accepted facts.

Citing sources within your paper

Whenever you quote, paraphrase, summarize, or otherwise refer to the work of another.

Parenthetical citations generally include:

• Last name of the author if you are citing an entire work.

• Last name of the author and either a page or paragraph number if you are citing a specific fact or quote.

• Omit author’s name if the name is mentioned in the text.
