Holy Week and Easter Sun-day are the climax to our Lentenjourney. During the past fortydays Catholics have been retrac-ing the footsteps of Jesus fromthe desert to the empty tomb. The purpose for this exercise isto deepen our faith response tothe Master’s call to holiness.

Jesus used nature and everyday examples to instruct and

teach, so does the Church. Ourjourney begins with anointingwith ashes and fasting – bothsigns of our “nothingness” beforeGod. These signs also show ourdesire to deny certain goods/activ-ities so that we have more time toreflect and pray. In particular wepray with Jesus for an empoweringby the Holy Spirit so that we canovercome sinful habits.

Holy Week begins withreenacting Jesus’ triumphantentry into Jerusalem. Masses onPassion (Palm) Sunday beginoutside. All carry palm leaves, joyfully recalling the biblicalaccount and the prior statementof Jesus: “I must do this so thatthe scriptures be fulfilled”.

Each day of Holy week hasits unique prayers and liturgical

ritual. These centuries old ritesof the Church seek to draw thebeliever into “the mind of Christ”and the price he paid for our sal-vation: “By his wounds we werehealed”. (1 Pet 2:24)

On Holy Thursday the LastSupper of the Lord is solemnlyreenacted recalling the com-mand of Jesus:“Do this in mem-ory of me”. The relevant scrip-tures are read highlighting theself giving of the Master and hiswords: “What I have done foryou, you must do for each other”(Jn 13:14). Thereafter the pastormoves through the congregationwashing feet. In prayer and peti-tion the assembly recommits tofulfill the Lord’s first command-ment: To love others in word andin deed.

Good Friday services are inEnglish and in Spanish. This is aday of strict fasting in the CatholicChurch because we recall the dayJesus made the supreme sacrificeof himself on Calvary. Parish-ioners gather to solemnly pray

The Stations of the Cross. The tra-ditional prayer exercise involvescircling the sanctuary, stopping atimages depicting poignantmoments leading to Crucifixion. The evening Via Crucis is an out-door reenactment led by theSpanish Young Adult Group. Manyvisitors attend thisinspiring prayer time.

Easter is thegreatest Holy Day inthe Church because itcommemorates theResurrection of Jesusfrom the tomb. Hiscoming back to lifefulfilled all that Jesussaid and promised.Long ago Saint Paulexclaimed: “UnlessChrist is raised fromthe dead our faith isvoid” (1 Cor 15:14)Thus Easter Massesare resplendent withjoyful music andalleluias. The EasterVigil Mass is the most

glorious, with extended scrip-ture readings and song. At thattime we induct new membersand baptize.

Father John Kieran, pas-tor, and staff welcome all toHoly Week and Easter servicesat Saint Pius. For more informa-tion call the church at 770-483-3660 or visit our website:www.spxconyers.com.
