• Our country is a much larger community
• A citizen is someone who has full membership in a community
• All citizens have a responsibility to make the community a better place

BENEFITS AND RESPONSIBILITIES• Canadian Citizenship has many benefits:
• Healthcare
• They can work in Canada
• Social Security (ex., employment insurance, welfare, maternity leave, etc.)
• Citizens can vote in elections
• It also has some responsibilities:
• Fighting for Canada at war
• Obeying the law
• Voting in elections
• Treating other citizens with respect

BECOMING CANADIANHow do you become a Canadian citizen?
1. Being born in Canada
2. Apply for citizenship
a) Live in Canada for three years
b) Speak with English of French
c) Pass a test showing they know Canadian laws and customs
d) Swear allegiance (loyalty) before a judge
*the process of becoming a Canadian is called naturalization

6) How old must you be to vote in a national election?
You mean there’s an actual test!?!
