Page 1: City Classifieds Pilot December 19, 2019 Page 19 · remote seller sales tax commis-sion for the purpose of collecting sales tax from remote sellers. • The borough assembly passed

The borough assembly failed to pass a letter to the Secretary of Agriculture and the United States Forest Service at an assembly meeting Monday expressing dis-content with the process of re-viewing the Roadless Rule in the Tongass National Forest.

The letter, which was drafted by Assembly Member Chelsea Tremblay, notes that when the Forest Service presented their six alternatives to the Roadless Rule at a public meeting in November, it seemed as if the decision to go

with the alternative six, exemp-tion of the Roadless Rule in the Tongass, had already been made. Tremblay also pointed out that over 90 percent of comments col-lected by the Forest Service were in favor of a no action alternative to the Roadless Rule.

“I think that that’s a rather dis-paraging thing to hear from any representative on any process, es-pecially when it strikes so close to home,” said Tremblay Monday evening.

Vice Mayor Jeigh Stanton Gre-gor and Assembly Member Jeff Meucci were in support of the let-ter; however, Mayor Mark Jensen

and Bob Lynn were against it, stating the assembly had already failed to pass two resolutions in support of repealing the Roadless Rule and keeping the Roadless Rule in place. Both wanted to stray away from taking a stance on the issue, which was the rea-son the assembly failed to pass both resolutions at their last meeting.

“I respect Juneau for not tak-ing a position on [the Roadless Rule], because of the controversy in their community,” said Jensen.

The motion to send the drafted letter to the Secretary of Agriculture and the United States

Forest Service failed in a 3-4 vote. Tremblay, Stanton Gregor and Meucci voted in favor of sending the letter.

In other borough action: • The borough assembly ap-

proved ordinance #2019-16 in its first reading. The ordinance amends the official zoning map for service area one to rezone a portion of a lot at 112 Scow Bay Loop Rd from industrial to com-mercial-2. The assembly voted on a similar resolution at their last assembly meeting, but the change had to be made through an ordinance.

• The borough assembly ap-proved ordinance 2019-17 in its first reading. The ordinance amends the Petersburg Munici-pal Code to add clarifying lan-guage to the borough traffic code, as required by a state statute.

• The borough assembly passed resolution #2019-18. The resolution adopts an alternative allocation method for the fiscal year 2020 shared fisheries busi-ness tax program.

• The borough assembly passed resolution #2019-19. The resolution authorizes the Peters-burg Borough to join the Alaska remote seller sales tax commis-sion for the purpose of collecting sales tax from remote sellers.

• The borough assembly passed resolution #2019-20. The resolution urges the state of Alaska to ensure that the British Columbia government imple-ments an open and transparent process to clean up and close the Tulsequah Chief Mine.

• The borough assembly sup-ported a letter to the borough’s representatives urging the reau-thorization of the Secure Rural Schools program and the full funding of the Payments in Lieu of Taxes program.

• The borough assembly ap-pointed Brian Lynch as the Pe-tersburg Economic Development Council’s member-at-large.

December 26, 1919 The Petersburg Volunteer Fire Department has been organized with an active and an inactive list. Those members whose business takes them from town, such as fishermen etc., have been placed on the inactive list. They are still members of the department and are expected to attend drills, fires, and meetings when in town, but do not need to make excuses when absent as it is taken for granted that they are absent from the city. With the new arrangement each team captain will know that there are certain men that he can always depend on to appear to fight any fire, and that there are a number of inactive members who will appear at certain times. This will allow the team captains to appoint the regular active members to the responsible positions and drill them so that the department may reach a high state of efficiency.

December 22, 1944 “The eyes of the nation are on Alaska,” said Representative Stanley McCutcheon, of Anchorage, who arrived in Juneau Tuesday from Washington, D. C. “The mere mention that you are from Alaska starts a flood of inquiries, as interest in the Territory has been intensified through the unprecedented publicity given Alaska through the war and the Alaska highway.” Representative McCutcheon conferred with Governor Gruening Anthony J. Dimond and Delegate Bartlett on problems which will confront Alaska when the war ends and plans that will insure

employment for war veterans and others. It is his opinion that the new congress which convenes in January will be generous to Alaska and that the Territory may expect its proper share of appropriations for post-war rehabilitation.

December 24, 1969 Winners of the Petersburg Press Christmas coloring contest were announced today by Editor Bob Weaver. Winning first prize of $10 each in their respective classifications were Bridget Dahl, 4, Cinda Crick, a kindergarten student, and Shelly Lynn Parkinson, 7. Also winning $10 for the outstanding individual entry was Vickie

Nordgren, 4. December 22, 1994

Petersburg was looking merry this week as homes and businesses were trimmed for the Chamber of Commerce’s Christmas Decorating Contest. This year’s contest was smaller than expected since the original sign-up list was destroyed in the Scandia House fire. Many people didn’t realize they had to sign up again in order to be entered in the contest. Winners for first place in the home category, Bud and Audrey Samuelson; for the business category, Trading Union Hardware; and Sons of Norway won first place in the division for organizations.
