Communications & Marketing Please join us for our Memorial Day ceremony – rain or shine Monday morning at 8 a.m. at Heroes Park (or Fire Station 21
on Corporate Drive if it rains). We have several veterans speaking, along with Mayor Milissa Holland. We just learned this
week that Congressman Ron DeSantis will be joining us and speaking. World War II veteran Frank Fonte and other
veterans will present memorial wreaths, and we will have local Gold Star Families there with us. The Community Chorus of
Palm Coast and the Coastal Florida Police & Fire Pipes & Drums will perform music, and the Palm Coast Fire Department
Honor Guard will present the colors. Please join us in remembering our veterans who lost their lives in service and
honoring their families.
We are also preparing for two other important upcoming events – both on Tuesday, June 5. We invite everyone to the
Grand Opening of Wastewater Treatment Plant 2 from 4 to 6 p.m. (see news release on our website for details), then we
invite everyone to the Palm Coast City Council meeting for a commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the 1998 wildfires.
Palm Coast Television is producing a video about the wildfires that will debut that evening.
The results of the National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation are in, and we’re pleased to announce the City of
Palm Coast came in 18th in the nation for cities with 30,000-99,999 population. Thank you to all residents who took the
pledge to conserve water. It’s an important issue for us and all of Florida. Follow our Facebook page for great tips on how
you can conserve water each and every day.
News releases and announcements released this week include a notice about our upcoming water disinfection process,
Movies in the Park (June 8 event), summer Nature/Fitness Walks (June 5 event) and road closure at Ramrock and
Ramblewood.
Welcome to our summer intern Nicole Brownrigg, who is attending the University of Alabama! Nicole will be working on
several big projects this summer and has already written two news releases.
Graphic design work includes design of the 2018 Intracoastal Waterway Cleanup mascot, a race flier for Feet to Feast 5K

Presentation to the Rotary Club of Flagler County: Tree Pruning Basics and City Regulations
A member of the Planning Division, the City’s Landscape Architect – Bill Butler, was the featured speaker at the luncheon meeting of the Rotary Club of Flagler County to show pictures and discuss the why, how and when of tree pruning. Also discussed were planting tips and what City regulations are in place to control over pruning. Assistance in the form of making like a tree, was provided by our City Fire Chief and Rotary member Mike Beadle! The Chief’s arm was an example of where to make cuts in order to remove a lateral branch properly (the arm was not actually cut!). The Club was very interested in the discussion and learned quite a lot on how to manage their trees on the commercial property they might own as well as their home sites. Presentation to the Savannah Square Homeowner’s Association:
Another presentation was made this week by Planning Division member and Landscape Architect, Bill Butler, at the May meeting of the Savannah Square Homeowner’s Association to answer questions the group had on tree removals, tree pruning, lawn care and how to select a landscape maintenance firm. Also discussed was what can be done to manage the undeveloped common area and what areas might have restrictions such as wetlands and conservation easements. The group was appreciative of the City’s willingness to take the time to talk with them and applauded all the beautification efforts that the City has done over the years.

We hosted our monthly Lunch N’ Lecture Series sponsored by Florida Hospital Flagler on Friday, May 18. Dr. Sean
Gimbert of New Spring Chiropractic shared “Bulletproof Your Nutrition” where he discussed how to improve your
health through natural nutritional methods. We had a great turnout and look forward to our next one on June 22.
Our summer adult sports leagues are starting up in less than 2 weeks. The registration deadline for our Adult
Basketball League and our new Adult Sand Volleyball League is May 30. We are accepting registrations for full
teams, small groups, and free agents if you don’t have a team. Visit www.palmcoastgov.com/register under the
Athletics tab for details. Our Recreation Supervisor of Aquatics and Head Lifeguard finished the American Red Cross
Basic Swim Instructor Course this week of which they teach swim instructor candidates the criteria for Learn to
Swim Lessons. We are very excited for our Summer Swim Fitness Challenge to start this Saturday. If you swim 100
miles at Frieda Zamba Swimming Pool between May 26 and Sept. 2, you get a t-shirt! Did you know that about 33
laps is equal to 1 mile? Better get swimming! You can sign up at the front desk.
On Saturday, May 19, all of our Youth Programs staff went through training in preparation for Fun in the Sun
Summer Camp starting on June 4. They will be hosting a “Meet the Camp Counselor Night” on Tuesday, May 29
from 5 to 7pm at the Palm Coast Community Center. Parents and kids will have a chance to meet their camp
counselors, ask questions, get our parent guidebook, and receive their camp T-shirt. Also this week, our Recreation
Supervisor of Marketing and Parks & Rec Marketing Intern designed and produced posters that are now displayed at
the Palm Coast Community Center and Palm Coast Tennis Center and will be up soon at the Frieda Zamba
Swimming Pool. These posters highlight summer programs and will help to drive registrations. They also further
display the City’s brand. See a few samples below.

NEWS RELEASE – City of Palm Coast Contact: Cindi Lane, Communications & Marketing Manager 386-986-3708; cell 386-214-4729 May 22, 2018
Palm Coast announces temporary modification of disinfection treatment procedures Palm Coast – In order to maintain the reliability of the water distribution system serving Palm Coast Utility, the town of Marineland and Flagler County Utilities customers who live in Painters Hill and Beverly Beach, the City of Palm Coast Utility Department will temporarily change the disinfection process for its potable (drinking water) water supply. From June 6 to 26, the City will disinfect the water with free chlorine rather than combined chlorine/ammonia (chloramines). During this period, customers may experience a slight increase in the taste and odor of chlorine. The periodic and temporary conversion from chloramines, which are a longer-lasting disinfectant, to free chlorine, which is a stronger disinfectant, helps to ensure the quality of the drinking water in the distribution system. The maintenance program, which is a normal procedure for water systems, is supported by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and will include daily testing to monitor water quality and measure the effectiveness of the program. After this process is completed, Palm Coast Utility will revert to disinfection by the chloramines method. Customers on dialysis who use a proportioning machine to prepare dialysate are advised to contact their physician to obtain the appropriate steps to accommodate the change in water disinfection. Customers who have fish tanks or aquatic species are advised to contact a professional aquarist to avoid any problems associated with chlorine. For more information, please contact Palm Coast Customer Service at 386-986-2360.

The cost of caring for our furry family members is on the rise and continues to grow. The cost of veterinary care alone puts a substantial burden on pet owners leading them to seek out lower-priced options. When veterinary visits are unavoidable, pet owners can utilize free or low cost animal clinics. Low cost clinics can perform spay and neuter surgeries, give vaccinations and microchipping, and other wellness services. A little research can result in a big savings. The Flagler Humane Society has a low cost wellness clinic and a low cost vaccination clinic to service those residents of Flagler County and surrounding areas. These clinics can help animals suffering from minor injuries, illnesses, and infections. The clinic can address minor issues that need surgical intervention, such as dentals and tumor/cyst removals. Donation Opportunities: The Flagler Humane Society Thrift Store always accepts donations. They cannot take in any computers/printers or large appliances. Call 386-597-2839 and leave a message. We are collecting shoes again! Bring your used shoes (any condition) to us to turn in for money! “General Donations” can be dropped off anytime at your convenience. FHS appreciates all donations, especially those from our Wish List (available at flaglerhumanesociety.org/wish-list). You can also purchase items via the Amazon.com link on the FHS website and ship them directly to the shelter. Outreach Adoption Events: Don’t forget that FHS have volunteers and adoptable pets at Petco, PetSmart, PetSupermarket and Tractor Supply in Palm Coast. Stop by and see our adoptable pets!
