U3A Melbourne City Newsletter, October-November 2010 Your Melbourne City U3A Silver Jubilee Issue no 229 October-November 2010 Dear Members, There is a lot happening between now and the end of the year: re-enrolment, course coordination for short and long courses for 2011, the lunch to celebrate our 25 th Anniversary (see notice!), our AGM with the Lord Mayor as speaker (another notice!) and the beginning of our Patrons’ Program (yet another notice!) This latter is an important plank – and a change in our thinking about the future of the Melbourne City U3A. No organisation can remain the same forever. Many fail if they do not adapt (think of Senior Citizens’ Clubs, so vibrant and relevant in the 50s and 60s). When you re-enrol, please give thought to the Patrons’ Program, and whether you are able to be a participant. Wearing identification is another issue that the Committee has been thinking about on the theme of ‘things change’. If we are to avoid having our insurance become invalid, we must develop a ‘risk management strategy’. Part of that strategy is having a plan for IMMEDIATE action if someone is ill, collapses, or shows other signs of distress. The best way to tackle this is for us all to WEAR identity cards at all times. On the back will be emergency contact details for each member, and tutors are helped immensely if they have this information at their fingertips. I have now talked to a lot of people from other U3As and almost all request their members to wear an ID on a lanyard. IDs and lanyards will be sent out with membership renewal receipts. Replacements (after the first issue) will cost $5. This is not an attempt to be more bureaucratic! It is facing the realities. I think the Committee will have to have a $2 fine for each time they themselves fail to wear their ID… Jill Thompson, President Page 1 Highlights this issue 25 th Anniversary Luncheon p 2 Patrons’ Program p2 October Forum p3 Carnival of Learning p4 Seniors’ Week ambassadors p4 Social outing p4 Renewed Short Course list pp 5 & 6 Venues p6 Year long course summary p7 AGM & committee election p8 U3A Melbourne City Inc, Ross House, 247 Flinders Lane, Melbourne 3000 ABN 84932435817 Ph (03) 9639 5209 Email: [email protected]

Your Melbourne City U3A Silver Jubilee Issue no 229 October-November 2010

Dear Members,There is a lot happening between now and the end of the year: re-enrolment, course coordination for short and long courses for 2011, the lunch to celebrate our 25th Anniversary (see notice!), our AGM with the Lord Mayor as speaker (another notice!) and the beginning of our Patrons’ Program (yet another notice!) This latter is an important plank – and a change in our thinking about the future of the Melbourne City U3A. No organisation can remain the same forever. Many

fail if they do not adapt (think of Senior Citizens’ Clubs, so vibrant and relevant in the 50s and 60s). I think the Committee will have to have a $2 fine for each time they themselves fail to wear their ID…

25th Anniversary LunchJoin the celebration of the 25th Anniversary of U3A Melbourne City!

12 noon, Friday 29 October 2010Champagne Reception, Door Prize, 3-Course Lunch

SPEAKER: Dr. Rick Swindell AM‘U3A: Challenges for Change’

VENUE : William Angliss College Restaurant550 Little Lonsdale Street, Melbourne (near Southern Cross Station)

COST : $45 all inclusive

BOOKINGS (WITH PAYMENT) ESSENTIAL at U3A office by Friday 22 October (please advise any special dietary needs)

Dr. Rick Swindell has been actively involved with the U3A movement for many years. He founded U3A Brisbane in 1986 and has since worked to enhance communication and cooperation between U3As regionally, nationally and internationally.

He is one of the founders of U3A Online. In 2004 he was awarded an AM for services to science education and development of the U3A movement. Rick has retired, but in 2008 he led a team of retired researchers who carried out the

largest study of U3As in Australia and New Zealand. He will talk about the key findings, and what they may say about future directions for U3A.

PATRONS’ PROGRAM - WHAT IS A PATRONS’ PROGRAM?THE PATRONS’ PROGRAM is a first step towards attracting voluntary gifts from those of us who can

afford it, so that the base fees paid by all of us do not rise to a point where some people might be priced out of our classes. But there is another important reason. When we seek help from the broader community, our case is strengthened if we can demonstrate significant ‘self help’. There are charitable trusts, foundatons and corporations which support organisations such as ours, but we need to be able to demonstrate our own financial commitment to the importance of our enterprise. The Patrons’ Program is only the first part of our plan. We are considering a

Sponsorship Program to attract corporate support. We are also attempting to gain tax deductibility for gifts, a prerequisite for grants from charitable trusts and foundations. We are also developing other plans to make our programs more affordable, more diverse and more attractive to those who look to U3A to enhance the quality of their intellectual and social life. Participation in The Patrons Program is certainly voluntary, and for those of us able to contribute a little extra, it presents an opportunity to demonstrate faith in the organisation and a concern for our colleagues. A pilot approach to a small number of members during August recruited 26 people to the Patrons’ Program. If our total membership responded in the same way this would boost next year's budget by some $35,000.) For details of how to join The Patrons’ Program, pleasse see the President's letter that will accompany your 2011 renewal.

Behind the Scenes @ U3A- We need your contribution!Like all good production companies, our U3A program relies on the skills and hard work of an invisible army. And in a volunteer organisation, if the ‘show is to go on’, that army of workers must come from YOU our members,. From your recent student feedback, we know you love the courses, appreciate the tutors and cherish the benefits U3A Melbourne brings to your lives. So, what can you contribute in return?

Your help is vital if we are to continue to offer such a wonderful program and smooth organisation. As we move into organising for 2011, there are many tasks, small and large, needing your assistance. In particular, we want:

One or two people with some administration/computer skills, a methodical approach, personable manner and flexible time to be responsible for room bookings in Ross House and other venues. This role is ongoing throughout the year, with peak times around annual yearlong and short course planning periods.

Members with good organisation, communication and people skills who would be interested in volunteer and office coordination responsibilities.

People with computer literacy skills to help with updating our various data-bases or website, and also to help with email correspondence to members, tutors and other individuals or organisations.

Members with specialist computer skills to assist with newsletter production, website development, database management and reporting, and computer back-up and security.

People with technical skills to help with equipment maintenance and writing usage instructions These are just a few key tasks we need help with, but your membership renewal/volunteer application forms list many more ways you can contribute. The spirit of U3A is based on mutual sharing of our talents and abilities - so let’s ignite that spirit in the months ahead. Contact the office on 9639-5209 or email [email protected] to let us know how you can help.

Twenty volunteers are rostered to hand out information on our courses and to spread the word about Melbourne’s ‘secret university’. Members of our U3A classes will demonstrate mahjong and chess, and display their craft-work. There will also be many other organisations with displays, live events on the stage and free performances around Federation Square. At 11.45 am at BMW Edge, the U3A Melbourne City Choir will start the program with songs from around the world. At 11.30 am on the concourse beside the Yarra, our Yoga class will give a display. At 3.40 pm the Music Ensemble will be the final act at the Edge. Come along and support your fellow members while learning more about the incredible range of courses on offer.
